I'm expecting Spider-Man, and Dr. Strange to be the two new core characters for the MCU. Basically playing the same role that Iron Man, and Captain America did for the first three phases. Originally I had Black Panther in there too, but... well.... :weep:

The only issue with Spider-Man is that from a franchise standpoint, yes, he will one of the core drivers of future MCU movies, but in-universe, writers will need to have some time pass where he's no longer the fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants teenager anymore and has gone through formal Avenger training to become a believable member or some sort of leader. With Captain America a retired old man, Black Widow dead and Fury not really involved in that end of the business, who is left to train and lead members? Strange might be powerful, but he's no team leader, nor has he trained under anyone to learn those unique skills. It makes me wonder if Wilson and/or Barnes might step into a leadership role at some point in the future of the MCU, since both are essentially extensions of most things Cap, the ultimate Avengers leader.

I have to agree that Captain Marvel is the most qualified right now (taking into account Black Panther’s absence).
Not because of her power level, otherwise Thor could do it, too.
She is a simply leader personality.

Captain Marvel is probably gonna take over Captain America's role as the leader of the next Avengers iteration.
Purely from a character/storytelling perspective I'd be very curious to see how they go with that given that to date she's been portrayed as very much a lone wolf type. Steve by contrast as a boots on the ground type soldier always worked as part of a team, typically in a lead position. Carol as fighter pilots are want to do, is by contrast way more self reliant and independent; even when she was operating in Starforce she was clearly the maverick of the group and certainly not a leader. Sure, pilots work in teams too and cooperation is vital for squadron cohesion, but it's still a different mindset just by the nature of what it is to pilot an aircraft. Moreover, she was a test pilot. Those cats are notoriously independently minded and borderline crazy.

We've never actually seen her in a leadership role or be responsible for anyone but herself in a fight, so I think having her adjusting to that mindset will be a fairly major part of how she develops over the next few movies. The fact that she's a powerhouse on top of that means I can see her being a little too eager to lead from the front and trying to do everything instead of trusting the team.

I agree. She's easily the best choice.
Given her movie, I wouldn't blame anyone who did

Haters gonna hate.

Besides Carol, has there been any official indication of what the next Avengers line-up is even going to be when it eventually rolls around?

I suspect the only existing characters that we can be reasonably be sure of is Peter Parker/Spider-Man & Sam Wilson/Captain America. It looks like they might be building towards a (mostly female) 'Young Avengers' line-up with Kate Bishop, Riri Williams, Kamala Khan & Cassie Lang, but whether that's going to be a separate project or a full blown 'Avengers' seems less obvious.

Carol leading a team of teenage girls may be thematically on brand, but I'm not sure it'd be the kind of challenge her character needs....and putting Peter in charge of them just sounds like too much of a comedy premise.

That probably depends on exactly when the next Avengers line-up will come to pass. Could be 2-3 years, could be 4-6. If it's that far away, there's really no way to even guess what the exact line-up would be. If it's sooner, you can assume it will probably include most of the major stars of the current ongoing movies, so Carol, Peter, Sam and Bucky, Thor, whoever becomes the new Black Panther, Strange, probably Shang-Chi, probably Wanda, maybe She-Hulk, maybe Black Widow II, maybe War machine. One or two of those might not be there and there could be some other wild card, but that would be the general idea.

I highly doubt the Young Avengers project would be a whole group full of young heroes with one established leader just calling themselves 'The Avengers'. They'll almost certainly be a distinct group - or, if not, they'll only be a few of the team members with more established characters around them.

Officially, no. But I have to imagine it’d be something like:

Doctor Strange (team leader)
Spider-Man
Captain Marvel
Falcon (Captain America II)
War Machine
She-Hulk
Hawkeye II (Kate Bishop)
Black Widow II (Yelena Belova)

I loved her movie, and the overall character is quickly becoming one of my favorite superheroes, which is why I feel like such a complete moron for forgetting about her.

Not to mention the fact that it's not the greatest image when you have the one and only guy on the team as the leader.

Plus, Spider-Man has traditionally never been much of a team leader...he barely works in the comic as a team player at all.

Seriously, even Wolverine works better in teams than Spidey

Marvel will grow into the leadership role, ranking military and all, but Falcon and Bucky will fill Cap's (and Widows) slots / skill sets within the team.

Spidey will be the soul and have the MCU somehow orbit him.

At some point, I'm thinking the new Black Widow, Yelena Belova, will take over the Natasha's role on the team.

Just quickly for the record I didn't hate it, but did just think it was a pretty bland movie overall.
Haven't got any problem with Brie Larson or the character, thought she was awesome in Endgame

That's surprising. She was barely in Endgame and got very little character development there. It was only in her own movie that she got to demonstrate more than just physical power. Good grief, Endgame didn't even bother to explain who she was for the benefit of anyone who missed her solo movie. She wasn't a character there, just a deus ex machina.

He'll definitely be on the next adult Avengers team, but I don't really see him taking on any kind of leadership role.
