From the set-up of Season One, Episode #1, I think the planned arc is Burnham becoming captain in the final episode, whichever season that ends up being.
Yes I tend to agree that will be the end storyline of Star Trek Discovery, And we may get a last season or at the very least the last few episodes with Michael Burnham promoted to Captain and in command of the U.S.S. Discovery; or some other 32nd century Starfleet vessel - perhaps even the Enterprise.;)

So you're saying that Michael becoming captain is like Voyager getting back home.

Michelle Yeoh really carried this episode with her good performance. In overall a good send off to Mirror Georgiou. I am curious to where she ended up to.
As for negatives..the toasting scene in the end felt really hokey and fake to me. Most of the characters besides Burnham did not have much to do with our Mirror Empress..on positive note at least. It would have been interesting if one of would have said: "She was a evil biatch and I am glad she is gone".
I want these people to disagree more...does not make the crew less of a family if they do. Otherwise in the next episode all will love coffee..in the next it is tea..and so forth. It its bit bland writing, in my opinion.

I agree the toasting was a bit much, but they do seem to think she’s dead, so I’ll cut the scene some slack. I had less trouble with that than how she was welcomed as a de facto crew member in the first place.

A 7 from me this time. Up one from last week primarily for the talents of Michelle Yeoh and the obvious chemistry with PU Burnham at the end, but I'm sticking to my opinion of being done with the violent and brutal mirror stuff in general. The Guardian reveal was OK, but the voice effect was pushing it for me. The Carl character was a wonderful homage to the many 'mysterious powerful alien' types we've had, and I enjoyed what the actor did with it. I'd have been fine with just his own voice for the entirety.

The idea of people with horrible pasts being set on some kind of redemption arc is nothing new in Trek - look at the middle of DS9's depiction of Dukat for example. But even with that, I'll echo some of the posters above that the toast scene at the end pushed it too far. I far prefered the smaller moment where Saru and Burnham discussed what had happened and would have been fine with that as the ending. They are the ones with past ties to PU Georgiou (well, along with Detmer, if we go by the list of former Shenzhou personnel). As such, it makes much more sense for them to bookend the emperor's story here as well.

Vance continues to surprise me. He's being awfully considerate towards Saru here. Is it weird that I trust that less and the Nechayev-style approach? Jury remains out on that one.

The crew of Discovery suffer loss and hardship. That brings people together in a different way. I think it was a closure for loss even if they were not close to the person. It is a much different sentiment than if the asshole at work passed and you attended their funeral.

I never posted about last week's part 1, so I'm just going to cover both halves here.
I was pretty happy with them overall, there were some good moments for Georgiou before they went down to the planet.
I'm a huge CSI fan so I got a big kick out of seeing Paul Guilfoyle as the Guardian of Forever.
Getting to see Ariam and Landy again, even just their Mirror counterparts was pretty fun.
After it was such a big part of her backstory, it was cool to get to see a version of the events surrounding the coup against Georgiou.
I have to admit, I was starting to think she had turned Micheal before she betrayed her.
Part 2 was really carried by Michelle Yeoh and Sonequa Martin-Green's performances. SMG seemed to really be having fun getting to chew the scenery to pieces as MU Burnham.
Loved the Carl reveal at the end.
With so much of the episode being based around Lorca's coup, I was really hoping for a surprise appearance by Jason Isaacs, and was a bit disappointed we didn't get one.
I do agree the big toast scene for Georgiou at the end was a bit over the top.
I voted 8 in the poll.

Man the whole "loss and suffering" thing is very overdone here it cant be the excuse for everything. Lots of shows are full of crews who suffered loss but still have good writing

Interesting article about the episode. According to an interview with the writers, the Guardian calling itself "Carl" was an homage to Carl Sagan.

Also, their original idea was not to do the MU at all.

"The writers also reveal they almost went a totally different direction with the episode. The original plan didn't involve the Mirror Universe at all.

"Burnham and Georgiou were going to beam down to the planet expecting to find the Guardian, and instead come across a lone house with a garden — not unlike the house in TNG’s “The Survivors." Its sole occupant, a mysterious Gardener, would turn out to be the Guardian," the writers explain. "Georgiou was going to live out her final hours there choosing to have a perfect day with (Prime) Burnham -- it involved baking an apple pie!"

WOW. That idea sounds terrible IMO. Georgiou baking a pie with Michael?! WTF? I am glad they did the MU instead.

So, DSC crew is dysfunctional and snipes at each other for much of S1. Fans bitch about unlikable characters and Roddenberry’s Vision. Now DSC crew gets along like a close family, fans bitch about bland writing due to lack of character conflicts.

Got it.

Also, speaking of bland writing with lack of character conflicts, it bears reminding:

If Burnham doesn't become Captain until the end of the series, then depending on how long the series runs, something bad won't have to happen to Saru. He can be promoted to Admiral and Tilly can get a command on a ship that's not necessarily Discovery.

Unfortunately, at this juncture, it doesn't look like Burnham would ever become a Captain. She was demoted from First Officer not once but twice now. It would take a lot to change Starfleet's mind.

You mean Discovery had a crew in season 1?

Is that true? I honestly dont remember that or any complains about it

Saru and Burnham tons of tension over Binary Stars mutiny and death of Geogeiou
Stamets hates Lorca and publicly questions his orders repeatedly
Lorca openly a dink to everyone
TyVoq and Stamets tension since, you know, murder and such

Definitely not your father’s Trek crew.

Even this season has had tension. Burnham and Saru had trust issues, Burnham demoted. Dinner scene with Detmer calling out Stamets inappropriately. Etc.

I liked this episode a lot more than it probably deserved. Georgiou has been my favorite character besides Saru since the beginning and it was just a really fun episode overall. Not sure about where this show is heading though. Without her we're down to what - five main characters?
