The Betelgeusean in the preview is
time soldier Yor from alternate 2379 (where they kept these uniforms much longer, apparently). It's a timeline created by a Romulan mining vessel, so it could actually be the Kelvin universe! More on Geogiou's problem in next episode's thread.
Pretty good episode. More about what's going on with Georgiou. Adira finally corrected someone about pronoun usage in relation to them. Book is sticking around. More of the Emerald Chain. Detmer being a bad-ass pilot. That's all I've got. I'm going with an 8.
It's an OK episode, one that I suspect I will forget. Some thoughts:
- So the Adira thing happened. It was surprisingly low key, without any sci-fi angle to it.
- And the Georgiou thing happened, and even though it is supposed to be deep and relevatory, I don't care. Her condition seems like it will end up being convoluted.
- It was nice having an episode in which the Burn itself was not completely front and center.
- Like I wrote above, the Tilly thing seems more to be about skipping ahead to a later part of her story, not unlike making Alexander several years older.
- And I am glad they did skip Tilly ahead: not only is she a good actor, she is a much better actor than the other options on the show at the moment. The time with Nilsson and Detmer were fun, but never did the performance convey gravitas.
- No one else but me will likely care, but there is nothing particularly impressive about "manual flying." Probably every system in the 23rd century, not to mention the more distant future, will be fly by wire. The controls will respond to your intentions.
- I find the badge displays less disorienting than the usual holographic displays.
I might compare it to Insurrection, if I remembered anything about Insurrection.

Wasn’t there a lot of trees and dappled sunlight? Maybe that’s where I’m getting the comparison.
I don't know if Saru's going to give Vance Tilly's "Detmer went rogue" bit that even Osyraa didn't buy, but it occurred to me it might not even be necessary. Saru didn't kill Osyraa or any of her people. Discovery just destroyed their weapons capability while Osyraa was in the process of committing an atrocity. That's it. That's probably still within Federation rules.
Also, shouldn't Discovery have an entire fleet of 32nd century shuttlecraft for these purposes instead of using Book's ship?

Another issue I had: Burnham fired what appeared to be some sort of futuristic crossbow bolt (?) directly into the chest of one of Khyeem's men.
Maybe it was a tranquilizer dart or something, but given how Khyeem later threatens Book with a similar weapon, I doubt it.

Tilly was cast too old, they were going to have to do this sooner or later. It's kind of like watching Snape, Lupin, and Black in Harry Potter played by actors much older than their characters' mid 30s.
I assume you meant Detmer and Owo. Nilsson hardly had any chance to showcase Sara Mitich's talent, same with Rhys and Bryce. I want to see more of Nilsson, Rhys, and Bryce. I think we could have a good friendship too in Rhys and Bryce along the lines of O'Brien/Bashir or Harry Kim/Tom Paris.
And how many times in media do we see a black and Asian guy hang out? It's not common in western or even Asian media (only ones that come to mind are "Rush Hour" and the lesser known tv series by Sammo Hung "Martial Law"). We need to see more of Rhys and Bryce.
Nice to see Saru's contribution to decoding the Burn signal.

It might have various settings the way a phaser does, just not apparent to the audience.
At this point the only ship transmitting the distress signal that would be meaningful to both Discovery and the audience is an Enterprise or Calypso Discovery.
On those terms, for the sake of "this is a TV series and this is our main cast", I can see that. And with the way Mary Wiseman plays Tilly here, it looks like the way Tilly was portrayed before came down to writing, not acting. Mary Wiseman does a good, convincing job of playing First Officer Tilly.
So I'll do what I did back in 2009, I'll suspend my disbelief. I thought it was crazy that Kirk went from Cadet to Captain in that movie, and I still do, but it's not worth it to keep beating that dead horse every single time.
To me, it seems like someone who's really into cars driving a standard. They treat it like a big deal. I've never driven a standard, so I'll take them at their word. If it's not true, I don't want the illusion shattered.
You aren't wrong about Tilly being cast too old.
That said, it doesn't change the bad writing that's involved with putting her in a command position over a bunch of others with seniority.

It's not automatically bad writing.
Time travel has been Star Trek's crutch since April 7, 1967. And if the scuttlebutt is true, they're going back to the thing that ruptured the achilleas tendon in the first place.I think banning time travel is probably one of the smartest moves the Federation ever made.
