Is it worth watching Unification 1 and 2 before 3?

    No spoilers please.

I ask because I’m watching discovery with my wife who hasn’t seen a lot of other trek. Would it add anything to her watching if Unification 3 by watching the TNG 2 parter?

I honestly don't think it would make much difference. The main characters involved don't even know about Unification 1 and 2 until it is told to them (not really a spoiler, they're from the 23rd century). The opening recap is of Discovery not TNG. In fact, if you don't see the episode title you won't think this particularly had anything to do with Unification 1 and 2 other than a followup of the general theme of Vulcan and Romulan unification.

I thought that would probably be the case but worth asking. Thanks a lot.

It's not a must do. However, it certainly helps. The three seem to flow well together.

Something from Part II is referenced, so it's nice to know what happened then. They do show the results of Spock's efforts hundreds of years later, and briefly mention what he did, but Unification II shows that in much more detail.

Not really. Plus you have the disadvantage of having to sit through a lot of really poor acting, (and even poorer writing of the character), by Denise Crosby as "Sela".

Nah, it's all explained pretty well within the context of the episode itself.

If she has never seen those TNG episodes, it would be a great benefit to have that “history” before seeing III on Discovery.

I watched Part 1 and 2 before watching the DISCO episode this week and I am really surprised at how well everything flows together, I really thought the connection would be tenuous at best but it really is a backdoor follow on. Not essential but certainly a good scene setter.

I didn't and I was fine. I kinda wanna go back though to check...
Spock really said the things from the holo as it was shown, or if there's some splicing and trickery at work

It's worth watching them because they're good episodes, but as a prep for this episode it's completely unnescessary. Everything you need to know is recapped within the episode itself.

They did edit and splice the dialog Spock spoke in that scene. It was from a couple of different scenes in the episodes, and they spliced it all together to make that one speech.

I did and ultimately found it to be unnecessary, but it was nice to have Spock's speech fresh on my mind when I saw the new episode.

Nothing in Discovery has ever required viewers to watch a past Trek episode or series.

That's not true. 'If Memory Serves' basically requires watching 'The Cage'

No it didn't. They included a nice montage of the events depicted in "The Cage" in the opening teaser of that episode.

Now there's no reason not to watch "The Cage", if one was someone was so inclined and had a copy of the episode available; but it was hardly required.

I would thing the Menagerie is better as it contained most of the cage and had the follow on with Spock disobeying orders and is the version most will have seen. It certainly puts Pike in a different light for those unaware of his future.

It isn't necessary to watch "Unification" or "Unification II" before "Unification III," but it's fun.

She really just did not need to be it the episode what so ever
