Joss Whedon "quits" his new series.

It sounds to me more like he might have something else that he is going to be doing instead. The way he's talking about changes in his life sounded positive, so I have a feeling it's not something that is going to impact him negatively.

Well, of course his statement about the departure would try to put a positive spin on it. And no doubt his publicist(s) had a hand in writing it. It's also telling that he sent it to Cinema Blend rather than a more discriminating outlet like Variety or The Hollywood Reporter.

Still, not a lot of information to go on at this point. Who knows. I'm sure the nitty gritty details will come out eventually.

I have to admit, I was a little surprised they didn't go with the standard "creative differences".

Yeah, I don't really buy him walking off this project due to exhaustion and wanting to spend more time with his family. Career wise, these last few years have been his least busy since before the Buffy years. His most recent few credits are basically this new show, 'Justice League' (such as it was), 'Agents of SHIELD' (producer in name only by all accounts) and 'Age of Ultron' (which came out over 5 years ago!) And this show itself have been in the making for what? 4 or 5 years at this point? (Read: back before his reputation was tarnished.) This is a guy that could really do with a successful project right now...and he's walking away from it.

This isn't creative differences, or even "creative differences", *Something* clearly happened and he's making for the door. What that something is, I wouldn't like to speculate, but whatever it was that happened must have been pretty serious to rate such an abrupt exit, and I can practically smell the bullshit wafting off that statement.

Yeah, and Bryan Singer said he was stepping away from Bohemian Rhapsody to care for his ailing mother. Fisher's publicly shared allegations have seemed flimsy as heck thus far, but I'm setting my eyebrows to "raised."

The HBO statement is the most telling.

“We have parted ways with Joss Whedon. We remain excited about the future of The Nevers and look forward to its premiere in the summer of 2021. "

Not even a thank you or a best wishes.

Again, you seem to be reading things there that you want to be there.

Another possibility occurred to me, maybe he's sick or something.
I like to try to give people the benefit of the doubt, so I don't really want to automatically jump to the assumption that he did something wrong that he's trying to hide from.
Being sick could also explain why he hasn't really been doing much lately, and could explain the references to a change in his life. Although I don't know if I'd say "exciting change" if he's sick, but that could just be an attempt to put a positive spin on things.

I don't know if this is the case anywhere else, but over here "wanting to spend more time with the family" has always seemed to be code for "caught blowing a homeless dude on Wimbledon common" whenever a politician steps down.
Which is why this one jumps out at me, given showbusiness code for that kind of thing is usually "creative differences".

Cool. But let’s not all jump to sexual impropriety. Mmkay?
Buddy, the only one jumping to that conclusion is you.

No, as far as circumstantial evidence goes, that's pretty clear that something was amiss.

I'm guessing there probably wasn't one incident in particular but a bunch of little stuff that added up and made HBO realize it wasn't worth it and finally time to drive the last nail in the coffin of his career.

It's got Jane Espenson and Doug Petrie on staff as producers, so hopefully one of them will take over.
