I love this view of the retrofit Discovery. That's not a bad looking ship at all.

"dow dow" is one of the worst sound effects in the franchise though XDJust rewatched it.
That scene with Book’s ship coming to the rescue and firing is even better on rewatch. The musical score during that scene is actually amazing, the visuals are stunning, and the sound effects are on point. It’s basically Star Wars level movie quality stuff on a TV screen, in a good way.
It’s a spectacular scene that satisfies even the most hardcore “Best of Star Trek/Star Wars” desires.
Give it a rewatch if you can, it’s an amazing scene once you notice all the other non plot details about it.
not really : with three locations you can calculate the speed of the effect and narrow the origin to two possible points in space (placed on a circle). Sure, a fourth black box would point at which of them is the right one, but it’s pointless to search for an hard to locate black box when you can just mushroom jump and check out both possible origins.
Might just be the angle, but the pylons look less swept back now, too?I listed a myriad of differences in the retrofit thread. But the bottom of the secondary hull had a noticeable box shaped section. Did they remove it, or make the areas to the sides thicker to match up?

Those slavers probably altered his DNA to prevent regrowth or something.

I just remembered that the shuttle in the Saru Short Trek was also different from the one in Disco S2 (Shenzhou instead of Archimedes), so Calypso having a different Disco is not the first retro error in SHO, which is more experimental anyway
It's not so much that she hates authority and thinks she's right here but she's besotted with Book for some reason (which honestly despite the trailers is still out of nowhere because pretty sure last time Book showed up they were "just friends" category). If it were just the black box that needed to be grabbed and Book was chilling with Grudge on Risa or something, I don't think she would have disobeyed orders.Amok Time and, yeah, stealing a starship in TSFS -- out of 79 eps and 6 movies. And he's a starship captain. Both to save Spock, btw.
The whole "renegade Kirk" thing has been debunked ad nauseum.
Wasn't her solution in S1 "her v. the authorities," and she was right? Or did they opt to use her solution and she didn't have to go renegade? I simply can't remember. I think she gave a speech and convinced tptb.
So her going off on her own now, does show growth away from that (sticking with the team and trying to convince them) to doing it on her own.
I want points now for saying something pro-Burnham.
Part of my problem w/ her is because I go through life thinking and saying "But I might be wrong." I just can't stand people who are so sure they're right.
I was actually thinking, no one knows what happened to Burnham's mother. But we do know she was running around that timeframe with an illegal time travel device and was completely fixated with Control. And Vance is pretty adamant about the no time travel thing. If Dr. Burnham didn't give up her red angel suit when the Fed demanded she hand it over, well...I must say, I like Admiral Vance, and am intrigued by his character. FWIW, I don’t think he’s being setup as the series villain.
Being on the internet must be hard lolPart of my problem w/ her is because I go through life thinking and saying "But I might be wrong." I just can't stand people who are so sure they're right.
He violated orders from Komack in Amok Time. His diversion was allowed only because T'Pau intervened. Kirk acknowledges his consequences:
MCCOY: You can't go off to Vulcan against Starfleet orders. You'll be busted
KIRK: I can't let Spock die, can I, Bones? And he will if we go to Altair. I owe him my life a dozen times over. Isn't that worth a career? He's my friend. Bridge. Navigation.
Perhaps Kirk's rebellion was overblown, but it became part of Trek's fabric. Janeway speaks of them as being more cavalier, less likely to quote rules and more likely to pull phasers. Kirk is an officer who governs his command and decisions on principles, not by politics and rules. Burnham is of a similar mindset. Her principles may not be 100% accurate to the situation, and colored by a traumatic past, but her willingness to go with her gut is very similar to Kirk.
And, as you note, Kirk broke multiple rules in Search for Spock, and his punishment amounted to a slap on the wrist, at best. Given what Kirk did this is amazing.

It's not so much Kirk that Burnham's turning into but Troi, where every alien guy of the week goes crazy over her not because of any organic development of the way their characters interact, but because the script says so.
