Just rewatched it.

That scene with Book’s ship coming to the rescue and firing is even better on rewatch. The musical score during that scene is actually amazing, the visuals are stunning, and the sound effects are on point. It’s basically Star Wars level movie quality stuff on a TV screen, in a good way.

It’s a spectacular scene that satisfies even the most hardcore “Best of Star Trek/Star Wars” desires.

Give it a rewatch if you can, it’s an amazing scene once you notice all the other non plot details about it.

Books ship turning itself inside out is stupid though cause it took way longer than is the ship just spun on its axis

 

Eh, if I wanted to watch mundane stuff I’d watch the Discovery channel, not Star Trek Discovery.

It’s a great scene that fulfills all the hallmarks of quality, fantastical sci-if/action. I alternate back and forth over which component of the scene is the most compelling; the score, the visuals, or the sound effects.

 

not really : with three locations you can calculate the speed of the effect and narrow the origin to two possible points in space (placed on a circle). Sure, a fourth black box would point at which of them is the right one, but it’s pointless to search for an hard to locate black box when you can just mushroom jump and check out both possible origins.

 

this episode put an end to theories that Georgiou is Kovich in disguise or a hologram. She is having some flashbacks to MU, so it is really her. But Kovich is probably responsible for whatever is happening to her.

 

I was thinking of this - Discovery is a reboot of Star Trek into a modern Science Fiction show and Strange New Worlds will likely be far more trad.

 

I don't think it will be a 23rd century show.

 

I just wanted to say, does anyone else think Sonequa Martin-Green serms to be having a lot more fun this season, now that she's not a human pretending to be a human trying to behave like a Vulcan?

The best way to describe this episode is “balance.” There was a definite A plot, that of Book, Michael and Georgiou, but every other main character (Saru, Stamets, Culber, Tilly) had something to sink their teeth into it.

This episode is never going to be remembered as anything groundbreaking, but it was one of the first times where Discovery didn’t take me out of the moment in confusion or something I’d definitely have to change. It was a well written episode with some great directorial work with the camera.

I am glad to see signs that Georgiou is having some kind of trauma drug back up and not being mind controlled from afar or some kind of hologram. She showed some potential growth as a character and had her usual great lines, delivered perfectly: “Form a sentence!” “I don’t care about your eyes under they are hanging from my belt.” The scenes of her and Michael working together were so well written and well played in this episode. They didn’t have a strong villain to play off with the Orion, but they were still strong.

Doug Jones deserves awards for his portrayal of Saru. You can see how conflicted over what to do regarding Burnham and how he isn’t quite settled into the role of commander. There has been so much growth from the original character trait of being frightened of his own shadow.

The Tilly scene with Grudge was also fun and classic Tilly. “Did you eat her?” made me laugh out loud.

I feel a better connection with Book than I did with two seasons with Ash Tyler. This is definitely due to better writing firstly because I’ve seen Shazad Latif in other things and he was good. I also give props to David Ajala, who has had slid right into the role of pirate with a heart of gold so easily.

I had a chuckle at how bloodless the deaths of the minions as Burnham blew them away from Book’s ship and in that same battle, you just knew the Andorian was either going to die or be severely wounded.

Linus jumping all over the ship was the perfect level of comedy and not overplayed. I had honestly forgotten about it when he popped into the turbolift in that moment.

The Book and Burnham turbolift scene showed amazing chemistry and they actually made me care if these characters like each other.

Vance was better written this episode, simply by giving him scenes of information dumping. You get to see how broken this universe actually is when he is doling out work to his captains. It’s more of basic survival than pie in the sky ideals that Burnham tries to sell in their scene near the end. It makes his reticence believable and not just evil to stop our heroes.

I’m hoping to see more of these differences between Discovery’s crew and the new Starfleet. I know in the thread for last week’s episode, people brought up the Janeway line about them being quicker to pull their phaser. Vance had a perfect opportunity to call it out in that scene with Burnham and Saru. I’d love a scene where someone tells them that their pie in the sky ideals are out of touch with the current times and their response is that those ideals still exist etc. etc.

I’m also wondering why we haven’t seen one person who is simply curious about Discovery. This ship is an antique that is suddenly on the rapid response team. It’s been given all these upgrades when it is almost a thousand years old. Even if Starfleet is just trying to survive, you have to think one person or more are still going to be curious.

And what is the actual command structure on Discovery? If Burnham is no longer “number one,” does that mean she isn’t going to take command if Saru is unable, even though she has two steps in rank over the glut of Lieutenants they have or is just relieved of doing the day to day work of first officer? Speaking of the Lieutenants, it appears Nilsson is at the top of that chain, but I’m interested to know how that shakes out. And with Stamets being a Lieutenant Commander, is he now the first officer if Burnham’s relieved? And what rank is Reno anyway?

Michael is written as a character that gets an idea in her head, in this case, figuring out the reason for The Burn, and becomes transfixed on it. I am completely fine with her being a “flawed character,” but I feel like the writers want me to get on board on with her. The Starfleet characters, as evidenced by that first scene, are just trying to make things work every day and she is locked into this pie in the sky idea that she can rebuild the whole Federation just by figuring this out. Culber’s line that she is a “responsibility hoarder” was exactly correct and I wish they would explore this as a flaw in her personality. Perhaps she is just trying to fix these big universal problems because she feels she has no choice. If she doesn’t remain in Starfleet, fine.

I’ve been happy with the pace they’ve been moving the season at. I’m hoping that they will not try and cram in some kind of resolution to The Burn before the end of the season just to have a point to end the season on. There aren’t going back to their own time, so they should take their time and build this universe.

Here is a serious question. I am confused about the burn.
1. First they were running out of dilithium.
2. Then it all went inert, but not quite at the same time. And for some reason that made matter and antimatter contact inside ships' warp cores, and kaboom.
3. But some people have some left, that still works. (?) (Aside from DSC -- I mean there are new fleet vessels that get around somehow)

Am I essentially correct?

 

A 7 this week. Probably the least interesting episode this season, with a lot of great character scenes throughout to help keep my interest during the slightly more dull A-plot.

I forget his name but the big-eyed alien crewmember that kept accidentally transporting in all of the wrong places was so funny.

There were so my understated character scenes but my favourite was the Stamets and Adira one. It seems like a good friendship will happen.

Would the US survive as an integrated entity if gasoline blew up in every active car and the internet went down because oil power plants exploded at the same time, destroying most communications and computers?

 

I hope that discovery’s next 2-3 seasons will be spent around rebuilding the federation - and not that the next 7 episodes will find a solution to 120 years of chaos. Also, great to see a Cardassian zone, a Ferengi zone, and a Klingon zone on the map.

how could the Emerald Chain be active on both the Beta and Alpha quadrants with limited or no communications and travel? Does not seem viable.

Of course it could have a single cause - the right-sized asteroid hitting the centre of North America could easily see the USA vanish as a superpower.

 

Now I actually got around to watching it, I enjoyed it a lot.I wasn’t expecting too much as response was a bit mixed on here.

It’s another visually stunning episode, well directed and nicely paced. Always a treat to see Michelle Yeoh in an expanded role (“I love me.” I love you too).

Interesting that Burnham’s impetuous “to hell with the rules” tendency rubs some people up horribly, when in fact it makes her one of the most Kirkian characters since James T himself. The Burnham/Saru playoff almost reminded me of those old Kirk vs Picard debates way back when. I like the ambiguity here—it wasn’t black and white, although they didn’t shy away from the fact that, for a military organisation like Starfleet, what Burnham did was not cool and rightly has consequences. Interesting that in the very last shot of the episode she takes off her combadge. (Heck, can we even call them combadges now? More like com/transporter/Tricorder badges. I bet you can even play Snake on them too) I’m really interested to see where they’re taking this storyline. And to find out what’s happening with Georgiou.

Nice to see Stamets get some good scenes with Adira and loved the closing scene with Hugh — these guys have way more natural chemistry than most the Trek couples we’ve seen in the past. Oh, have to say Burnham and Book do as well. Not generally a ‘shipper’, but I enjoy seeing them together.

Finally, the Linus gag was absolutely inspired and played just perfectly.
