That's why I believe those "windows" on the dorsal are more likely a sensor palette and just coincidentally resemble windows ;)
They're ideally situated for planetary scans too, as the Enterprise always orbits with its side facing the planet!

I thought I'd linked to that when I mentioned the stickied post in the Fan Production forum.

As I said tis is just a test and to implement it properly I wold have to modify the mesh so that the windows were planar not sloped.

It's funny how us fans make apologies for the show, I don't think they really thought things through, there are so many errors in continuity too. In one episode I saw Nomad coming out of a turbo lift then kirk then proceeded into it which then turned into sickbay. The details on the neck are the same size as the windows and on the original show they emitted light in the same way, however if you look there does not seem to be any room inside for and rooms. I will have to decide what the round windows are when I get round to it. Where they windows or lights or coking ports, hmmm.

Well, we don't know what's in it. As @Shaw once pointed out, you could put some decent sized rooms in the dorsal. Once could imagine they are science labs with instruments pointing out through said windows.

That would work. Mytran came up with a good idea at the top of this page that explores that very theme.

That's what fans are for!

I agree though that when working on a weekly TV show there are many other concerns that need to be addressed which take priority. We have the advantage of 50 years of hindsight and time for extensive armchair ruminations.
And I shall continue to ruminate... ;)

Me too. There is something magical about the show even now.

Hi chaps. Not sure if this it correct (Keeps blinking no?) But I could not find many reference images, the ones I have seen show the top half only, so I got the idea off of a Pikes chair toy. [IMG]pikes chair by Ian Simpson, on Flickr

I'm going to spend some time now optimising the project as I have noticed performance issues due to all the rooms behind the closed doors, also the new corridor which is a new build draws a lot quicker in the engine than the one I did a year ago so I am tempted to rebuild it too.

Hi Ian. I designed those flags, and in the course of my research I found an interesting post on an old user group that I will quote below:

“On my behalf, Bjo Trimble interviewed set designer William W. Thiess and we discovered that the United Space flag was three unequal stripes of cloth, dark blue, white, dark blue stapled together. These were draped and placed on the pole so as to simulate a draped horizontal tri-band flag. Attached to the top of the staff were two (one each) trapezoidal "streamers", one red and one white. Long time watchers of the show will recall that United Space was an early term for the United Federation of Planets, perhaps even the fictional political entity which preceded the UFP. When that flags [sic] were reproduced for the 1972 Equicon (an Early Star Trek fan convention) in Los Angeles the white "stripe" was described as an "edge-on view of the Milky Way Galaxy.
    Jim Ferrigan, 7 December 2002”

Later, Ferrigan noted that the two flags mentioned above were referred to in the script as “The United Space Flag” and the “Command Flag”.

Whatever Theiss may or may not have recalled, there definitely is gold fringe around the edges of the two whatevers.

Since the Daleks were partially based upon the life support chair for Davros ("in universe", anyway, production order, the Daleks came first), I have to wonder how a Dalek-like monster might look based upon Pike's chair. Would the top resemble a large squat version of Nomad's top third?

Ok that's interesting, Someone in this group sent me some pictures of those flags pointing out that the American flag was not present on the Enterprise lol. When you say you designed the flags, did you design them for the original series?

Oh no... that was Theiss. I attempted to reconstruct what the flags were, on this forum about twelve tears ago iirc, from some of the same screen caps you’ve used. I went through a lot of versions and don’t recall what we settled on as making the best sense. But I am pretty sure at one point I had three blue and two white stripes on that “United Space” flag, with a detached UFP pennant and a similar white pennant emblazoned with a red “command” star. Later I combined the UFP and blue/white flag/pennant into what you have here.

I came across this information after I had moved on. What is relevant now is three stripes with the two blue being wider than the middle white.

@aridas sofia That's an interesting quote about the flag. For years, many fans have put forth the idea that it was the flag of Cuba (original or modified), which is not an unreasonable given where the Desi of Desilu came from. So it's really a bunch of cloth strips that resemble at first glance that flag....

    Greetings guys.

Well I have been busy getting back to where I started.
The corridor has been re modelled because it was done in 2018 so I had only been modelling 13 months so it was a bit messy. The second half of corridor was made from bits from the original mesh so I scrapped the lot and made all new builds. The rooms that I have recently finished have been turned into blueprints in the engine so that they "spawn" as the door opens, this makes the project run so smoothly now due to the fact that it isn't drawing assets not in view.

I also have been updating the material on the bussard collectors which took a while but I am now quite pleased with the result, (looks better animated)[IMG]Bussard MK2 by Ian Simpson, on Flickr

I have just got as far as I can for now with Kirk's quarters. This has been quite difficult trying to get this looking ok because the old scans from the original series are not good when you zoom in so I had to use screenshots then tweak and so on. I have not got the skillset to attempt the red buddha yet though I have started to get my head around Zbrush to create some assets in the scene. Here is my progress so far. So let me know what you guys think. Is there any good reference images of the transparent globe I think it's some sort of star globe with earth in the centre.

Sorry to backtrack over a month here, but I just noticed this:

Wouldn't these be in Engineering rather than the dorsal?;)
