You can do this to all the ships in the game, it’s nothing special.
The new update has you upgrading the Season 2 Discovery with new future tech.
Personally - it looks like an engineer lifted the engine exhaust from Han Solo’s landspeeder in Solo...
It directly addresses they can’t use warp technology so Discovery can only be upgraded with non-warp tech. But it can jump still place to place.
Didn’t That Hope is You, Part One establish that warp drive is still fine, it’s just that dilithium is now in incredibly short supply, meaning there’s not a whole lot of warp travel going on?
Yes, explicitly. They even have little candy dilithiums they hand out so that people can jet around for a short time. (Which I'm not sure I get, but that's an argument for elsewhere.

That makes more sense, as they make money from players buying upgrades. I thought because the ship doesn't have a huge dilethium supply, Discovery would get upgraded in the series to use an alternative way of travelling, and that was the spoiler! They mention how they use programmable matter to make everything new compatible with the old design of Discovery.

I reached out to one of the people that makes the game on Reddit. They're based in Ireland. The Discovery update was timed to come out after Season 3 finished airing, but Season 3 was delayed 4 months. Instead of delaying the game, the Irish team removed the Season 3 references from the game and reskinned everyone back to their season 2 looks, and removed a handful of characters that will be returned to the game in 2021.
They didn't get everything though, which is why the ship having AI (Zora) is still in the game, and Georgiou, Detmer, Khan and Linus aren't as they leave for their own spinoff at the end of Season 3.

I'm all for them strapping giant rocket boosters to Discovery.

I find it hard to believe they'd admit something like that.
CBS would probably sue them, since plot details are probably covered by an NDA.
The game’s refresh went live with Season 3 spoilers, so probably not a concern.
