Spoilers Would Picard actually want to...

He got the heart in his 20s. He was nowhere near his natural time of death yet,
once you start artificially modifying your system there is no natural time line. There's no reason to think he'd have some traditionalist view about it when he was essentially a cyborg. We have all kinds of cyborgs alive on earth now. It's quite common. We don't use the term very often, and over time it will be so common no one will even think to use it. Cochlear implants, artificial hearts, subcutaneous microchips, artificial organs. Hell I have an artificial defibrilator wired to my heart and I have a bluetooth device for it so i can see what my battery and usage levels are like and send them to my cardiologist. Once you get those things, I think you can kind of kiss the idea of natural life span away. We all will have a life span, and life will end, but it can be prolonged by adding more artificial hardware.

Frankly Star Trek has been a little afraid to deal with that fact. A Federation society might well have an extremely low birth rate and an average human age well past 100.

I doubt even Captain Picard would be ok with dying at 29 or 60 if a artificial heart would keep him alive. At 94 it’s a different story, he’s lived a long time, looks terrible and was sick. No reason to prolong life at that point if it meant him being a mental vegetable. So I think he would have been ok with dying(which he did. The fake Picard is just a copy now. No telling how different he is. Fake Picard might want to live forever. In that terrible looking body I don’t see why but he might.

Proof? Because the Enterprise comes across as a ship, so if the creators intended it then it got lost somewhere in the process.

You can regard the ships as characters all you want and you're not alone in that. But, I do not and telling me the creators indented it as such without any proof is easily dismissed.

And, no matter what, the ENT-D is ugly and if it is a character it is a lumpy, uneven, awkward, mass of a character. Not interesting to me.

I mean, I think the Enterprise-D is beautiful, but, yeah, ships are not characters. In fact, apparently the writers on VOY were instructed not to make the actual characters too three-dimensional or interesting because Rick Berman thought the ship was the real main character, and God knows that made VOY far inferior to what it could have been.

...live as an artificial being?

It doesn't seem like Picard's style to prolong his life past it's natural time.

It was an extremely stupid plot point to kill picard. It's not really him. Just his memories now. So hes dead and probably didnt care that a robot version of himself would be walking around. Why should he??? Hes dead....

Extremely disappointed in this aspect of the show. Pretty much ruined the series for me actually.

Yes it is. Because it is Picardin this show and he was ok with it.

Fans have this fixed image of their heroes. Thing is, people change. Always. That's what happens in real life. I'm different now than I was 20 years ago. So is Picard. He even changed during the season, finding more will to keep going with his life.
Real humans aren't stagnant creatures who remain the same for decades. If you want that for your tv/movie/book characters, you're expecting unrealistic individuals.

Sure people change. Still doesnt make this stupid plot point well executed. It was a bad idea to kill Picard and have your lead now as a robot. They could have gone with so many great avenues with this show and they come up with a 10 episode arc dealing with another Data death and killing Picard off and having a robot construct take over. It wasn't an good idea. They should have gone for a more serialized series. Deep Space Nine still takes the prize for an Arc based Star trek show done well. Picard had it moments but they really dropped the ball in the end. Just more tripe from the JJ crew. Hopefully Strange New Worlds will be better.

Picard is more interesting than he was before.

And, until the show states otherwise it just Picard, which is consistent with Trek tech presented before. No reason to assume it isn't Picard.

Than it's not Picard according to TOS...

Sure it is. In TOS consciousness was transferable.
What are little girls made of... copied memories. Not real kirk. The last ep with the Mind transfer was not all kirk as well. Picard is a a copy according to dialogue. Scanned not transferred.

I would not expect Korby to get it right.

It was all Kirk with Lester swapping. And there were also Sargon and his people, among other examples. So, I have no issue with this being all Picard, the authors treat him as Picard and that is sufficient for me.

Mileage will vary. But, for me, its logical extension of Trek tech and current technological efforts.

Remember, he was dying from a disease, not the end of his normal expected lifespan. I’d sure take the bump for a few more headache-free years.

The "expected normal lifespan" is a lie. It's a statistic. What's normal is that no one knows when they will die.

Rios’s ship isn’t ‘ugly;’ however it looks very impractical as a freighter, unless it just wasn’t hauling cargo containers at the moment. It would be like using my car itself to haul freight when it would be more practical to have a U-Haul trailer hooked up to it for that job.

Kinda depends what cargo you haul.

Small, high-risk/high-reward payloads like data, people or contraband? You don't need a bulky trailer and, if you need to run from the law, you want a hot-rod.

There's a reason NASCAR grew out of the suped-up cars bootleggers used to use.

Really, the only thing that ticks me off about the synth thing is precisely that Picard has no agency in the matter. I can think of a few reasons he might very well choose to live as a synthetic lifeform - from Chabon's "put your money where you mouth is" reasoning to simply wanting to be around as a mentor for confused, traumatized Soji - but robbing him of the choice was really a poor bit of writing.

One of the interesting things Patrick mentioned in a recent interview they had at trekmovie was Picard would have to deal with was Starfleet reacting to him becoming an android.I think that will be interesting to see how events are dealt with in season2. They also wanted to bring Brent Spiner back as Alton Soong if they can find a good story for the character.

Well, he could always kill himself. That's his choice after all.
