Sorry, I completely disagree. I just rewatched the scene. She was kidnapped, drugged, and was about to be executed. Fighting her way out, taking massive amounts of fire. Everything she did, other than theft, was in self defence.

She was not kidnapped, she was taken into custody by the authoritys of the station. Then she gunned her way out of there killing a bunch of people in the process.

Agreed, I felt Burnham was totally ok with going along with what the "authorities" were doing until one threatened to kill her, then all bets were off. Keeping in mind the "authorities" are an extension of a corrupt Orion Syndicate that is running rampant in a UFP-less future.

Watched it today.

Overall I think the episode was fairly decent, and they finally let Martin-Green show she has range to do more than whiny mopey. She has good chemistry with David Ajala. Pacing was also improved.

But (the dreaded and inevitable but), Discovery has fooled me before.

He screws her over, then they steal some stuff and get in a gunfight. They kill a bunch of people trying to escape. Now we need to make the present better by going back to the ways of the distant past.

That’s not even a little unsettling? Or at least not very woke by Trek standards?

He screws her over, then they steal some stuff and get in a gunfight. They kill a bunch of people trying to escape. Now we need to make the present better by going back to the ways of the distant past.

That’s not even a little unsettling? Or at least not very woke by Trek standards?

If I believed that interpretation, it might be. But I seriously doubt that was even close to what the writers, actors and director had in mind.
Of course the "ways of this distant past" ( just over a century???) aren't exactly as horrible as slavery, gender inequality and unsafe working conditions.

What authorities? What authority are they acting under and from where do they derive that authority? They were trying to steal her stuff. The trader was about to kill her for goodness sakes, was she supposed to just accept it?

A 21st century TV show, made as America confronts the legacy of racism, should not be judged by the standards of the 1960s.

If I believed that interpretation, it might be. But I seriously doubt that was even close to what the writers, actors and director had in mind.
Of course the "ways of this distant past" ( just over a century???) aren't exactly as horrible as slavery, gender inequality and unsafe working conditions.

To be clear, I don’t think that was the intent either. But I do think it’s questionable, and something worth thinking about.

I didn’t even mention how they gave Book magic powers. There’s a lot there to take apart.

Sometimes a spade is a spade as they say. The two black characters acted as any two white characters might...one attacked the other after a perceived injustice while on an important "mission".

It was the security personal of the station....so technically its not kidnapping. Thats what I wanted to say. No need to get overly sarcastic....

Considering those same guards casually executed Cosmo on the spot for letting his cargo be stolen by Book, I'd say they were probably operating on about the same kind of authority as the folks who "governed" Tortuga were.

What magic powers?? We've seen aliens and enhanced humans with dozens of different abilities, usually explained somehow. How do we know he's not genetically enhanced??

Not really. It's a pretty extreme interpretation that places Black characters in a box. Which I think is something those of African descent in America and elsewhere would object to.

Book having "special powers" is a problem how? Other characters get to be "special" but not a Black man?

Surely you realize those are common and unfortunate stereotypes. You do, don’t you? It’s OK to like the show and discuss these things. I’m not implying motive, but these tropes are perpetuated when people don’t think about them.

The way his forehead glowed with those dots when he "prayed" to summon the native plant with the fluid I'd say he's more of a hybrid of a human and a telepathic humanoid species we have yet to meet in the Trek universe or even partially-augmented with psionic technology to trigger lower life forms.

"Woke" is a buzzword cooked up within the last few years to measure how 'aware' or 'sensitive' (or, dare I say it, 'politically correct') a person is.

The implication is, those who aren't 'woke' are 'asleep'.

Needless to say, it's controversial. I personally think the word "woke" (NOT the concept behind it, just the actual word) is arrogant, pretentious and judgmental. But YMMV.
