The Walking Dead: World Beyond

I haven't started watching this yet because I forgot to set the DVR for the pilot. I was astonished to see this is the first WD universe show that doesn't re-broadcast its pilot almost every night on AMC, particularly before the next episode airs the following Sunday, so I still haven't started watching. This does not bode well for its future, as it would seem as if AMC itself doesn't have much faith in the product.

Judging what almost everyone here (and out there) seems to be saying about it since last week's premiere, I highly doubt it will get a season 2. My prediction is that AMC will circle the wagons, kill WB and redirect its energy in wrapping up TWD, continuing Fear and getting the new Carol/Darryl spinoff ready.

Not only is this Walking Dead for Millennials, but they're Nebraskan Millennials. There's so much angst. And bad music playing over the Zombie attacks. Like, the one girl has to be totally all grown up because the Boomers are no help at all. And, like, the other girl has to get out of that boring town and visit the city before the world ends, because Zombie Apocalypse. And there are a couple of boys who are, y'know, there and one of them seems to have escaped from Stranger Things.

The Animated Necrotic Individuals in this one are not called Zombies, or Walkers. In this neck of the woods, they're called Empties. Which is really reaching to avoid calling them Zombies or Walkers. I wonder if they collect five cents for each one they skewer.

One of the interesting things about the premise is that the Zombie Apocalypse came quickly to this town in the form of a plane crash on Main Street. When the kids sneak out past curfew, the burned-out hulk is still there, covered with vines. But somehow the town bounced back and put up a wall and turned into Alexandria very quickly, because there are no Governors or Negans in Nebraska. There are Black Helicopter People, though.

The show also has a bit of a Logan's Run feel to it, because there are a couple of adults chasing off after the kids to bring them back. I wonder if they'll yell, "Runner!" when they spot them. But in this version, the domed city has been destroyed and none of the travelers know it yet. Was this destruction brought on by the kids mouthing off against the mysterious Black Helicopter People? More angst coming. We already know that one of the girls killed the mother of one of the boys who was pregnant with his unborn sister (we know this because, even if we missed the connection in the expository dialogue, the boy has a picture in his fanny pack of the woman in the flashback).

So, basically, we've got a new Walking Dead show with zero interesting characters, but the slight promise of learning more about the Zombie Virus and the Black Helicopter People-- who seem to grow more evil every time we encounter them. What could possibly be their real reason for slaughtering that entire community? They were no threat at all to them.

Was this destruction brought on by the kids mouthing off against the mysterious Black Helicopter People?

If the destruction of the town was related to anything that went on in the episode, I'd say it's more likely the girls' dad sending his message about needing help that triggered the attack than mouth teenagers.

Then again, this show does seem to have a "boomers don't get millennials" thing going on, so who knows?

I had set the DVR to record the whole series, but after this one episode, hubby and I both agreed to just delete it. There are better ways to waste my time.

Just bring me the original Walking Dead show, or the Carol & Daryl show. Whatever. But, dear GOD, please, not these angsty, self-righteous J Crew models.

Honestly, I couldn't even be bothered finishing the first episode. I figured if there was an important reveal of if it suddenly got good I could come back to it. Sounds like no danger of that so far.

Deserved. The showrunners get to explore characters no one ever even hinted at wanting to see, and as a result, water down the franchise.

I liked it better than most. I thought it a fresh take...and loved the treehouse scene.

Back when I went to school, we had three whole months of vacation....one could let ones’ mind wander. I had that feel watching this past episode. It reminded me of the film
“Bless the Beasts and Children”

Finally got around to watching episode one, and I didn’t find it that bad at all. Then I saw ep 2 with all the kids fiddle-fucking around with the Walkers ...er... Empties. I know the kids are new to this world and very inexperienced but they seem to have this weird habit of trying to kill Empties near precarious ledges into pits. They may be highly intelligent and book-smart but they’re all dumb as a bag of hammers. And corduroy boy just needs to shut the fuck up. He’s like Eugene in the original - keeps running his mouth and using big words to constantly remind everyone around him how intelligent he is. Just try to stay silent for longer than 2 minutes once!

Ugh...so I don’t know about this one. Maybe the two adults will catch up to them and whip them into real shape.

And as expected, I am most fascinated by the helo people. Sort of neo-fascist, but I get why they think they need that kind of mentality to survive and rebuild. Sadly, if they succeed, they’re not likely to set down those new habits unless their people rise up in revolution against them, causing a new war and, with it, a fresh new supply of Empties to roam the earth.

Actually, 3/4 of the 4 kids actually look like "normal" people rather than fashion models. So THAT part i appreciate.

But not really expecting to like their stories ... i guess the alleged-murderer-that-i-didnt-know-was-that-until-i-looked-him-up-online guy might have an interesting story... though i am disappointed that he grew up in another community. It would have been interesting to see him grown up "in the wild"...but i guess we will see that with Huck

Yeah....my main interest in seeing how this relates to Rick's movie and how it all comes together.

I wonder if "Ride with Carol and Darryl" will touch on any of the places they will visit. (which will be the upper Midwest as interpreted by the state of Virginia)

It has been mentioned that, were folks introduced to TWD from the view of other groups, that Rick and his followers would seem the villains.

I think we are about to see this. The helicopter kids vs Virginia. TWD meets the third group, which is the most peaceable.

Everything up to now has been small battles, before the boomer goes all Alpha-Omega bomb. It takes two keys to launch. Assuming that was a boomer. I think there is a “Virginia-class” attack sub.

In the mean time, the different characters from different series fight one another.
