Were there ideas for 'Enterprise' after season 4?

I went to Norwich a couple of weeks ago and I was shocked to find there was a hill. Cambridge didn't have such fancy accoutrements.

The Romulan war could have started at the end or after Season 7 so we wouldn’t have to watch it and assume it all went to pass.

Had Enterprise continued past Season 4, it would have showed the Earth/Romulan war and its conclusion leading to the formation of the Federation... however, for this to work, the writers would need to 'compress' the actual war over a period of Season 5, 6 and about 16 episodes of Season 7 (because according to data, the war lasted 4 years... from 2156 - 2160) - I don't think it would have been a problem to do this... because they could easily have a larger arc 'Earth/Romulan war' and maybe continuing with mini-arcs within each season (like they did in S4)... each mini-arc focusing on crucial events during the war to flesh it all out better by including other ships in Starfleet.

The remainder of Season 7 (6 episodes) could have been another min-arc which would showcase the formation of the Federation.

The writers could have created the Romulan War, for all practical purposes.

We know basically nothing about that conflict: there's no start date or end date, no list of battles or participants, no idea on what started it or ended it. All we got is the vague idea that it was about a century before TOS and two before TNG; that the tech involved was more primitive than in TOS (no surprise there); and that the Romulans refused to make visual contact (a fun scifi twist that would require some legerdemain with the ol' quill).

That a Battle of Cheron would have been relevant there, rather than being a confrontation from the 2360s that is fresh in the minds of the "The Defector" Romulans, is only ever suggested in the screen readout from "In a Mirror, Darkly" that requires freeze-framing to be readable. That the war would have preceded the formation of the UFP in 2161, rather than followed this, is mere speculation, an attempt to explain why one of the combatants was called "Earth" rather than "the UFP" - IMHO wasted effort for a distinction that probably doesn't matter. That the war would have begun after 2154 rather than before it is also debatable: the Romulans fought by proxy before that date, and the action may well be counted as part of the war in later history writing. And we don't really know when the proxy fighting began, so perhaps the war went from, say, 2132 to 2195, and for that reason is remembered as significant?

Or then it took all of May and half of June in 2157, and for that reason is completely forgotten by the time of "Balance of Terror", except by the bigot Stiles?

I honestly think the legend of the Romulan/Earth conflict is best to never be visualized because it would only lead to disappointment. When I saw the first Star Wars movie, my imagination for the Clone Wars was nothing like the Prequels produced. As for "Balanced of Terror" I thought was told about the war was good enough for me, and didn't require anything further. Star Trek is not about wars, its about preventing them, and bringing in a new phase of optimism for humanity and all other races in the future.

If they want to keep the (previous) fanon dates of 2156 to 2160 intact, then they could probably relegate the Romulan War to a season-long arc, a la the Xindi Crisis, that takes place over 4 years with liberal use of time jumps.

S4- 2154-2155: As shown, except for that last episode.

S5- 2155-2156: A few neat episodes as hinted: Kzinti, Stratos, first Starbase, then some stuff on the lead-up to the Earth-Romulan War, which would begin in the cliffhanger)

S6- 2156-2160: Maybe even a subtitled season (Star Trek: Enterprise: The Romulan War), mostly a singular arc, with occasional forays into episodes, as they fight the Romulans and gather allies and win and lose battles. Crew probably separates, some promotions, maybe a couple deaths and other cast changes. Ends on the Battle of Cheron that ends the war.

S7- 2160-2161: Dealing with the fallout of the largest war in the region and the actual formation of the Federation from the Coalition and its allies. Episodes featuring trips to Tellar Prime, Andoria, Alpha Centauri in the wake of the Romulan Treaty to promote the idea of a Federation (and dealing with Tellarite, Andorian, and Centauran problems). Ends with the signing of the Federation Charter, with maybe some time travel nonsense annoying Archer on that historic day.

Personally, doing a war - after having already done one in Deep Space Nine - doesn't really sound all that appealing.
Agreed. If it happened to be one, I would like the story to be something beyond the war itself. What I don't want is a documentary gimmick like what Alec Peters thought up with his overrated Axanar project.

Not just ideas... plans.
Elizabeth would have lived. And Tucker and T'Pol's relationship would obviously have evolved as a result.
The Federation would have continued to take shape. This was supposed to have included adding Shran to the ship's crew.
And the conflict with the Romulans would of course have become more intense over time.

I really like Enterprise, great show and cast. I’m rewatching them all at the moment, so many good stories. Such a shame we never saw three more seasons, but as has been said we’ve got four great sets of adventures so I’m glad for that.

IIRC, when Scott Bakula was signed to ENT, he was promised his pick of a big movie role with Paramount for signing their longterm contract. Possibly a post-series ENT movie, of course, but a movie at least. So "The Romulan War" (or aftermath) could have been saved for that.

Not only Shran as a crew member for a fifth season, but the promise of a kzinti-focused story, "Kilkenny Cats", with the approval/blessings of Larry Niven.

Did he ever get that or was he stuck playing Archer and then got screwed out of that promise because the show went belly up after the fourth season?

A lot of stuff got screwed up by the lack of a 5th season. Most notably the fans who had to endure that deplorable series finale.

Read once that they would do alot more Mirror universe, maybe half the season with them alternating episodes.

The Mirror Universe would have been welcome to return for the better theme music alone. But I think it was pretty well capped with Archer dying and Hoshi becoming Empress.

As much as I love the idea of the Kziti coming back, turns out the story was just a remake of DS9's "The Abandoned". It was nearly made as a New Voyages/Phase II fan film episode.

I wouldn't be surprised Mirror Hoshi seek out Captain Archer or someone remaining in that scarred world brought him into that world to stir things up. Mirror Hoshi would find Archer a challenge.
