General Computer Thread

There aren't HDD/SSD/NWME drivers for drives from different manufacturers, there are several industry standards for which there are drivers like MFM, RLL, SAS, PATA, SATA and so on.
Every drive manufacturer use the same standards and these are usually backwards compatible so a SATA generation 1 drive will work on a generation 2 controller etc etc but there's no Western Digital driver or Toshiba driver or Samsung driver which is a good thing, in the old days this was different and that complicated stuff immensely.:wtf:
Windows 10 is a whiny little bitch when it comes to being transplanted to other drives, in your case it probably tried to run on SATA drivers, while you put it on a NVME drive, it probably could not detect that this early in the boot stage and tried to boot from a hardware subsystem (SATA) when it was no longer there.

I love your descriptor. Windows 10 or should I call it Whinedows 10 is indeed a whiny little bitch sometimes. Even video driver changes can cause issues sometimes.

Windows since 2000 has been picky about boot devices.

However I suspect in this case it's not driver related as much as boot order related - which can related to both the drive order (if the SATA drive was seen as Device0 and the NMVe is seen as 1 it's going to be bitch).

The you have partition order. Before you get to the act partition Windows is installed on you've got a couple of other (EFI and recovery). If that's messed up then windows is going to complain.

Smart move is to use a device agnostic (i.e doesn't come from driver maker) program such as paragon and use it to migrate Windows from drive to another.

Or use do a clean install but use a program such as PCMover and transfer all your applications and data.

So far a month on almost the only difference I have noticed is transfer speeds with large files seem a little faster than regular SATA overall. Also the space factor, since the drive is now on the mainboard itself one of my two available drive bays has been freed up. I ditched both my optical drives, have kept them in the case as I lost the bay covers but they are no longer connected. Just using an external DVD drive for movies and the occasional software disk.

I run Windows7 x64 on a Dell Latitude E6520 laptop.

Lately, folders under My Pictures have been moving inside other folders by themselves. I know I'm not dragging them there, certainly not this often.

There are some steps to make all folders incapable of being deleted, etc, but this also doesn't allow the creation of new folders.

Anybody else experience this behavior?

Maybe unrelated, but from inside PhotoShop, when I go to open a file, all files & folders do not display and I have to "reset" by clicking My Pictures from Libraries.

I don't think so. It's just 1 or 2 fonts styles in a chatroom. Most of them display properly.

OK in that case "shrug"

You could try running a scannow or DISM both can be run from a command prompt as administrator, right click start menu chose command prompt as admin.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth which will check your windows 10 image

A more advanced version does a deeper scan
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

and scannow is a handy command to do also helps repair problems

SFC / scannow

I've noticed some discoloration around my charger recently. I've had this laptop for about 5 years, and haven't seen any signs of thermal damage (which can sometimes cause such discoloration). At the moment, I'm inclined to think it's just a result of handling. Any thoughts?

Human skin is acidic and plastics might not like that much, clean with alcohol and see if it gets better.

handling and the general impact light has on white over a period of time.

Probably so. I talked about it with my brother just to have an extra opinion, and we both agreed that's likely the cause. Thanks. :)

this little Raspberry Pi 4b is going to be the server for an AllStarLink node. I tried using an old 16GB card I had for the O,S but it had no more life in it and died trying to image it. So off to the store for another card today, and finally got it running and in its case. The node hardware will be ready by the end of the week and I'll be providing an amateur radio voip link from an antenna on my balcony.

I am currently using a Motorola USB charge which is pretty consistent at around 5v 3a, but apparently I am being told it will need its own dedicated power supply and not a phone charger. All my dedicated switching power supplies are in use. As it will be running full duty as a server, and gateway to voice traffic, as well as powering the RF circuit on the node, the power supply will be critical so I'll be ordering one made for it.

(old Opinel knife added so I can have a Fabrique en France label next to Made in UK, but it didn't show up well.)

VOIP here is super shitty if you are doing other things like watching a video at the same time...... They use that here for phone connections and it's shitty. Mobile is the best way to go.

Late to the thread. I have an HP Envy Model 700--327c. I clone my OS HDD every week with Macrium Reflect. I use three 2 TB SCSI drives internally and I have two more 2 TB SCSI drives externally that I clone with the one internal Win 7 OS 2 TB HD drive. One clone is from two Wednesdays ago, the other is from the most recent Wednesday. I've stayed with Windows 7 professional Service Pack 1. The extra 2 TB HDD internal drives are copies of each other and contain music and video. My video card provides 3840 by 2160 pixels to a 43 inch UHD LED TV that I use for a monitor.

64 bit OS, 16 GB ram, Intel Core i7 4770 CPU @ 3.4 GHz.

I do not want someone else deciding on software updates for my computer. If windows 7 stops working, I'll switch to Linux before I install another Microsoft OS.
