The Dark Crystal Prequel Series Coming To Netflix

It's all computerized -- they can probably track who's watching what.

The problem with that is if I sign up before the show that drew me in premieres, then I'm probably going to watch other stuff first. So does that mean I'd be counted towards, say Star Trek: TNG when I actually signed up to watch Stranger Things Season 4.

Yep, exactly. It was their most-expensive show to produce. Honestly, I was surprised when it was announced in the first place given Netflix's history. It looked like an expensive show that wouldn't go beyond 1 season. I can't honestly say I'm surprised.
 
Yeah, it's no surprise (especially after Sense8)...but it still sucks. I can wish and dream and hope that fans rallying gets a little more like Sense8 did, but I doubt it considering the length of production. Oh, and COVID.

But how much of that cost was inital start up (set design, construction etc) that would normally be amortised over several seasons and how much would be ongoing?

A bit of both, I think. I read an article that said much of the production was full of lineage-like talent and for it to work, they would have had to keep the same people on rather than replace them, so you can imagine, the on-going puppetry work would have been costly, an area that likely wouldn't have gotten amortised over time. Not like they would have been able to replace anyone like they could an actor, should they have wanted to continue, given that it's rather specialized.
 
Perhaps they will revisit this place once the world has returned to a sense of normalcy. When people can get close to other people without a threat of anything other than invading one's personal space.

think the only way that could happens was if they did a fold n hold on the sets.

If they were struck, everyhing is in the dumpster and that would add extra costs to any attempt to restart production.
 
I think they still have some of the originals from the first movie in a museum at Henson studios. I, too, would be very surprised if they scrapped everything. Here's hoping they don't....
 
I think they also have some at The Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta and The Museum of the Moving Image in New York, which both have big permanent Henson exhibits.

Strange Inheritance had an interesting program about puppets used for mini operas. (Fosser’s Opera in Focus)

Perhaps different groups could band together...
 
Never say never. Netflix has "cancelled" a bunch of shows due to the pandemic, which they can just as easily "uncancel" later on down the line.
 
Amazon now has the book in stock, so I got my copy in today. :D I haven't had a chance to read through much of it yet, but already I can say it's a great addition to a DC library. Iris' art has a very Froudian style, but with a more interesting color palette in ways. The book covers all of the major characters as well as species (and has an entry on Raunip from Creation Myths, no less), and descriptions of the Gelfling clans.

The icing on the cake, IMO, is that the inside covers have a nice map of different regions of Thra (the front cover is labeled while the back has a map sans labels). I'm looking forward to reading the entries in more detail, but I think it's a great book. :cool:
