What did it for me was a line to the affect of, “What is this, Kirk in the 2260’s?” I mean, really? It’s just so cringy and kind of embarrassing. This isn’t something I’d ever have someone watch to get into Trek. That’s why I keep saying that this is a show that cadets in Starfleet watch and not “actual” events taking place after Voyager.

I know it’s a comedy and not meant to be taken seriously but comedy has to be grounded in some seriousness. This show is laughing at Star Trek and not with it.

Oh, it was "done" for me before that, but that's one of the stronger aspects of, "Really?" these characters, mostly Mariner, are too Meta. I think really it was "done" for me with Mariner's listing of "member berries" at the end of the first episode where she's name dropping a bunch of people/things she can teach Brad about as her protegee.

And the show runners have taken a stance that they're not making fun of Trek here but... At times it kind of feels like they are. Like Mariner's yawning fit at the start of the episode a couple of weeks ago, almost more feels like making fun of expository scenes setting up the premise of an episode. I mean, that's kind of making fun of things isn't it?

And the bad part is the expository information was interesting, the set-up of the "generation" ship was interesting, then we get Mariner yawning at it.

I also know it's a comedy, but it's too heavy sometimes, seems too mocking, and it's hard to make this "fit" in with everything else from TNG-era Trek. It does fit better that this is a "show within a show" and not actual events. But that doesn't quite work either because the internal references are just too obscure a show inside the universe would have in it.

Been watching since 1975, and I don’t feel it is laughing at Star Trek. Maybe loosen up a little?
I’m glad you’ve been watching that long. Still doesn’t change my opinion. You can feel however you want.

It feels like the same thing to me...one is done as a joke and the other as a commentary on past history. People reference historical figures.
One is relevant to the situation. They are back in the time period of Kirk and company. The other is Mariner fighting aliens and saying this is just like Kirk in the 2260’s. It’s a stretch to say the least.

Eh. For my money, it was the weakest episode yet. Nice that we got in a crazy holodeck malfunction ep, but it wasn't really that funny - I was actually surprised at how gorey it was in a couple of spots. And big shrug on the Fletcher storyline. But, ah well. One dud out of six isn't enough to put me off the show.

Comedy is usually stretching situations.

And, the point is that people in Star Trek study history and admire historical figures, including Janeway in a super serious way. It's OK to have both.

Why would the safeties go off if there is a power failure? Not only does that seem silly it also doesn’t make sense. A power failure would cause the holodeck to fail completely. Not just a random piece of code.

Older holodeck that probably needs a firmware update.

I strongly approve of referential humor because it shows how much care, love, and enjoyment the creators got out of classic Star Trek. It's a game the viewer can engage in and if it's not your cup of tea, fine, but I love it.

Also, "memberberries" to make fun of it is....well, annoying. Could we stop that? We get it. You don't like the references. No need to make up a mocking nickname.

Probably because the holodecks are obscenely complex pieces of equipment! :)
