Your annual vacation/holidays

Sorry for the bump, but I don't want to see this thread die.

Until we can all take vacations again, maybe we could talk about great trips we have already taken?

Me, apart from my baseball trips (too many to count) I'd have to put the Calgary Stampede and the Germany trip at the top of my list. Those are the most fun I have had in my life that didn't involve baseball.

Especially the Germany trip. Not just the Oktoberfest, but the whole thing in general. I fell in love with Germany as soon as I got there. It was a great chance to get in touch with my German roots. Awaken my German consciousness, as it were.

In fact, you know what I found out about German consciousness?

When we're conscious, we're great!

Still want to travel to Austria this year - with distance, mask and all. No parties of course as I avoided masses even before Corona. Wellness and such. In September. I hope don't get ill before that.....

Suck it up, suck it up, suck it up, border's closed ... aaahhhh

Am I correct in assuming that the US/Canada border IS (technically) open...but anyone who crosses it into Canada has to quarantine?

The border is closed to non-essential travel. You can't just come over to shop, visit, sight-see, or what have you.

And yes, when you enter the country, you will be required to quarantine for 14 days.

Here's an article that I read recently that discusses a writer's experience crossing into both Canada and the US during our COVID times:

I Crossed Back Into a State of Denial

I’m starting to think of realistic COVID vacations. The entire point of going to New Orleans is crowded bars. But there’s plenty of places in the American Southwest and places like that where the point is to walk around outside and look at the pretty scenery. Something like Colorado or sone less popular National Park.

And don't forget the food.

Me, I have precisely zero interest in the Mardi Gras, but I would LOVE to get a taste of authentic Cajun food.

And the occasional fais do-do. :)

I don't want to go there during Mardi Gras, but I was going to go to the Jazz Festival this year, and I've been going there every year for the week between Christmas and New Years just for going to restaurants and music bars.

But, for Covid-Cations. What's a good place I could go instead of NO for late December? I'm thinking Arizona or New Mexico, maybe around some less popular national parks. Somewhere warm in the winter where most of the good things to do are outside alone.

A National Park New Mexico trip is looking nice, it's the only state in the area I haven't been to.

Edit: Did some Google work, apparently I am exempt from their quarantine rules cause my state is low risk, but their parks are only open to New Mexico residents. Will keep an eye on that as December approaches. There must be some place I can finally take a trip without significant COVID risks.

I was in Albuquerque two years ago in early September. New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment. I was happy to have experienced Southwestern charm. I visited the Museum of Natural History and the historic Old Town. The Pueblo Cultural Center was a nice venue that showcased Native American history, arts and crafts. I was disappointed I didn't get to see the petroglyphs park. It turned out I needed to drive, but I had no rental car and preferred to travel via Uber. I took the tram ride to the Sandia Peaks; the 10,000-ft elevation was literally and figuratively breathtaking. The locals recommended Santa Fe for my next visit.

My vacation to Austria is coming up soon. Not sure if I can enjoy it like the last time I was there. I'm trying to make the best of it.

We decided not to venture too far away - NY has done a great job at keeping the infection rate low across the state and within the city - so we just rented a house with a pool up in the Catskills for 5 weeks. Took some time off but also worked from up there quite a bit, too. We relished the scenery change, the additional space/square footage, and the peace and quiet. We're already planning a week out on Cape Cod for next month and then possibly a week or two in somewhere else in November (we have friends staying in their parents' house in the Shenandoah valley in VA and offered us a room). It's basically just gonna be house rentals away from big crowds and groups of people this year. We'll see if 2021 proves to be any better so we can feel safe boarding a plane again.

I'm seriously thinking of driving all the way to Kansas City just to get some barbeque.

Although I don't know if Arthur Bryant's is open...their website doesn't say anything, will probably have to call.

Oh well...even if they're closed, I'll have an excuse to crash at a few Waffle Houses along the way!

Google Maps shows it closing in 20 minutes. Not sure if you can make it before then.
