News Trans character announced

I've just read everything that Shatner posted in those tweets and found nothing transphobic. He hardly even mentioned "trans". All he did is point out that he didn't like to be labeled and that whenever people call him "cis" it's used as an attack. It's sad that many people are being falsely labeled "transphobic" just because they don't like the use of labels and think everyone should be treated equally. And not everyone who disagrees with what is currently politically correct is a "racist", "misogynist", "homophobe" or "transphobe".

In a 13-page thread that talks about trans representation, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Morgan Kelly, a character first mentioned in the TNG episode Power Play who was revealed to be a transgender woman in the Enterprise novel Live by the Code. As far as I know, she is the first human trans character in Star Trek.

Agree 100% Shatner is an intelligent thoughtful person who's tweet was attempted to get hijacked.

He didn't back down, that was the issue, not caving in, nor was disrespectful. Just stated his opinion and thoughts and replied intelligently, albeit snarky after snark was tweeted his way

I have ZERO problem with any consenting adult as long as they don't harm a child or animal it's all good. Be you whatever you are, as long as you are good person, and try to get along with others. Life is better that way.

As far as trans or non binary characters I really don't care I only want well written characters, then make them whatever you choose vs checking off boxes.

The former is a large problem for Kurtsman n crew, IMO. MWV

As of a few hours ago I changed it to Yuuki Asuna from Sword Art Online. She's a powerful swordsman, kind mother and awesome wife!

The scene between Asuna and Kirito in today's new episode had me crying so hard.

SAO and the questions it asks about technology reminds me a lot of Trek, especially since it is combined with questions about humanity and the toll technology can take on us.

I wouldn't call what Shatner posted intelligent by any stretch of the imagination. It was a confused old man ranting about the modern world expanding to include people he never had to consider before.

The 89 year old millionaire can be expected to Google search the meaning of 'cisgender'. He's a big boy.

Also, yeah, cis people are not the bastions of knowledge they think they are when it comes to gender. Shatner doesn't know what he is talking about and is worse yet refusing to back down and actually research trans issues. I deal with this all the time because my parents are Boomers and they think they actually get to have an opinion on my being transgender. It's fucking ridiculous infantalizing of transgender and non-binary people, people that have to spend years constantly thinking about their gender. Meanwhile, cisgender people never have to give their gender a second thought, let alone a first.

It's possible he just isn't interested in looking much more into the issue. All he knows is whenever it's been used on him it's been in some kind of attack on his opinions. Sure he could look it up but in the end people are just never going to always be on the same page with these things. It's not so much about who is right or wrong so much as having a different take on the same issue. To be a homophobe I am thinking you need a little more evidence on whether or not someone likes some label giving to them.

Being transphobic and homophobic because you don't feel like using Google to educate yourself is still being transphobic and homophobic.

It doesn't matter if you understand things or not, if you say homophobic and transphobic things then you're being homophobic and transphobic. It still effects LGBTQ+ people, it hurts them and inspires others to hurt them in worse ways. That doesn't go away because he's uneducated.

I'm not sure. To be one of those things you got to actively be doing something like discrimination or using slurs in order or demean someone. Otherwise it's just a disagreement over labels and perception. Granted this doesn't prove he isn't all of those things either but it's just not enough to go on. Especially for a word still so new or us being unfamiliar with how many times he was called it or what kind of argument was going on. I mean at this point I think everyone has been called everything from a racist to SJW to a Karen to a basically every possible insult imaginable on the internet. Most of these words have thus been diluted by internet rage arguing. I also bet a good chunk of people haven't even heard the word before much less had time to form a opinion on it.

I agree but saying I don't want to be called a ciss male is not really a slur. It's just him not wanting other people to tell him how he should define himself. Also understanding very much matters because you never know where people are getting their info. Also if someone is calling you something in a fight then it's a good bet they are not using it in away to educate them but to dismiss.

I think many people go with a more simple definition. Do I hate someone or see less value in someone because they are gay or trans. If the answer is no then that means they aren't. Granted this seems almost to simplistic but at the same time you can overthink something. What matters most I believe tends to come out in how people treat each other more than anything else. At least on a individual level. Things are different when it comes to laws. So it really comes down to how does Shatner treat people who are LGBTQ in normal everyday situations. Not internet fighting of course because that stuff is almost always becomes hostile.

It's always hard to read people on social media just for this reason. Which is why it's become such a toxic part of our culture. It brings things out in people that aren't good. People get triggered and start to see the world in a more black and white way instead of the shades of grey it really is. Especially when they are on it for to long.

Shatner for example never would in the past get dragged into these kinds of fights before he found social media. Chances are in the past he would have shaken it off or even maybe agree with the argument but the internet can change you a little. Make you more bitter and dismissive.

You don't need to say "kill yourself, tranny!" To be transphobic. Dog whistles are a thing that exist.

I mean, Pelosi and Schummer don't need to call me a tranny faggot to my face for me to know that they're transphobes who would rather I die then fight for the Medicare for All I need to ensure I never die from not being able to afford medical care because I ran out of HRT or got raped and sodomized walking down the street. Trans and non-binary people aren't dumb, we can read between lines.

Dog whistles are mostly something politicians do. Talking to someone on the internet is just talking. Sure he is a celebrity but I don't think people are looking towards him as some kind of expert on the issue. Also it's possible he is. It's just something that can't be proved. It comes down I suppose if someone wants to give him the benefit of doubt or not. I can see why people would be skeptical but I tend to lend towards trust more than not. At least with people. Have lots of negative views about society in general but when it comes to individuals I always expect most people to be good or at least mostly good. Or I like to see the good in people might be a better way of putting it.

No gets to decide how society labels them.
