These Are The Voyages, Volumes 2 and 3 of the volumes covering the 1970s.

I've finished the TMP book through the end of production/postproduction. I still have another third to go before finishing it. I will say that Cushman's access to memos in the Roddenberry Archives has been very illuminating.

There's a nice detailed memo from Roddenberry to Wise regarding the Director's Cut as it stood in April 1979. Roddenberry's comments are well thought out, service the story and the film's structure. Many of his suggestions were implemented, such as adding more intercutting of characters (generally a take was held on a character as long as they were talking rather than cut away to a reaction while they were talking).

Something Roddenberry lobbied hard for was the reintroduction of the Captain's Log entries in the film. Wise didn't like the idea of Log entries but relented knowing that this could provide a way to clarify that Spock's arrival was pivotal in solving the anti-matter engine imbalance. The log entries that made the final cut were written by Roddenberry.

Cushman doesn't let Roddenberry off the hook for large portions of the book but these post-production insights were very interesting to read.

I really liked the log entries in TMP. Each of the other movies didn't have them feature as prominently and mid-story like TMP did.

TWOK features 3 (Saavik in the simulator, Chekov on approach to CA5, Kirk at the end)
TSFS features 1 (film opening- Kirk)
TVH features 1 (Kirk on Vulcan)
TFF features none (an aborted log by Kirk doesn't really count)
TUC features 2 (Kirk upon leaving spacedock, Kirk at the very end)
GEN features 2 (Picard prior to Stellar Cartography scene, Picard at the end)
FC features 1 (Picard- just after his nightmare)
INS features none
NEM features 1 (Picard- in orbit of Romulus)

Well hell, curiosity has finally gotten the better of me, and I just purchased volume 3 of the 70's volume. My driving interest in the writing and production of TMP won out over my issues with Cushman's editorial integrity.

GEN features 2 (Picard prior to Stellar Cartography scene...

This log entry was not originally scripted. It was done to cover a cut scene where Dr. Crusher reports that the emotion chip was fused to Data. The shot of the Enterprise during the log entry is lifted from the show and has always looked terrible on the big screen.

Now back to....

I finally finished Volume 3 and consider it the better of the 2 volumes. Frankly, I wish volume 2 and 3 had been combined as I feel that there's filler in both books. However, what I find to be filler might be completely fascinating to others so your mileage might vary.

Volume 3 ends with a short and not necessarily comprehensive chapter on the marketing of the film followed by a week-by-week look at the reviews and box office returns. Finally, there's a very interesting chapter about the early development of Star Trek 2, including Roddenberry's time travel story (which comes across better than most reports would indicate) and how Roddenberry was eventually shut out of the development of future Trek films after TMP.

As I said before, I was hoping that the Roddenberry Archives might provide a treasure trove of information and photos but in truth the books repeat a lot of information found elsewhere. However the books continue to provide an excellent inside view into the films from Roddenberry's point of view as well as a a pretty good clearinghouse of information culled from other sources.

I wonder what level of research he based that on, or if he got it from some other source. Sherilyn Connelly's The First Star Trek Movie goes deep into the subject of the film's release and tickets prices and boxoffice at a level of primary source research Cushman's work tends not to exhibit. It's a book I recommend for its good scholarship and proper citation of sources... Not "Pinterest" FFS.

My copy of the third volume just arrived last night. I was truly amazed at how many pictures Cushman credits to Pinterest or random websites. I don’t think you can get away with that lazy shit on a college paper anymore, let alone a published book. I’d say a lot of the pics he uses have citations fairly easy to find through Getty Images or Paramount... which I may just do as I actually read through it.

And, hello,Tineye.com

I am one of the first to admit that I'll toss him my money for one of his books if there's literally no other way to get the behind the scenes info of a show (say the Irwin Allen shows) but his work gets sloppier, lazier and more padded with each new book. This is definitely a no sale for me.

What is the consensus on Sherilyn Connelly's The First Star Trek Movie? Is it worth the price?

I really enjoyed it. It's a rigorous work of history and scholarship with extensive citations, none of which are "Pinterest."

But but but, if he got the images from Getty or Paramount, then he would have to pay usage fees to re-publish them in the book! (I presume)
Of course, snatching them from unlicensed usage on pinterest like that doesn't mean it's okay to use them in a book without clearance from the actual rights holders.

I’m sure he go the okay from his legendary “legal console.”

Dang it, ya beat me to it. That was always my favorite part of his whole endeavor.

Anyone can form a company and self-publish. Speaking from experience as founder and CEO of 16th Street Press. And driver/postage clerk/editor/cook, etc.

Has anyone seen these in brick-mortar.stores? That's a feat, since books are purchased kind of on consignment by the retailers and stores get credit back for what they don't sell. (Where remainders come from.) Retailers don't carry self published books (usually) since they don't trust self publishers to have the deep pockets to cover the returns that a Hachette does.

I'll second the recommendation of The First Star Trek Movie. The author is a serious researcher who is also generous and has helped @Harvey and I get some news items and stuff from trades for Fact Trek. Buy her book.

Oh my... I'd say you've got to be kidding but there's the track record.

"Published"

I'm sure the "publisher" worked closely with the "editor."

They ran it through and the green light came on, so...

I'm still partial to the very, very rare '70s paperback covers.

I've missed this. Ordered!

Thanks! I will wait a bit longer and see if the price goes down a bit on Amazon or elsewhere.

It's been out for quite a long time now. I don't think the prices are going to drop much.

I'll consider. I would use my local interlibrary loan service, but it's been cancelled until further notice because of the current pandemic. :barf2:
