Exactly. Taking it as a documentary of events rather than a dramatic presentation can be frustrating. But, the reverse makes it quite workable. Same with TOS..
I tend to think in-universe all starships and Starfleet in general run like the Cerritos. We’re just seeing dramatizations of those.

The "We demand a statue" part was a joke, but the "One could argue Miles is the most fully realized character" is probably a sincere opinion of a long-term TNG fan.
Miles O'Brien: I don't want to be a statue.
Until proven otherwise, I do think that Miles' statue is a commemoration of the "Everymen" of Starfleet everywhere and him as the quintessential one.
Which would, in fact, make him the most important person in Starfleet history.
He was also a master of darts. Truly a Renaissance man.
That's pretty much where I'm at. I like the show a lot...but there really isn't much to talk about. That doesn't mean it's not fun/entertaining...But there's not much else to it. It's like, I'm not going to spend a ton of time talking about Lay's Potato Chips. They're good...but they're...you know...potato chips.
Might I suggest you completely, wildly overanalyze a silly, throwaway joke until it's sapped of all possible fun and bend yourself into knots trying to "justify" how it fits into the canon? Seems to be a popular hobby around here.

I moderately enjoying last week's episode (Rutherford's scenes - not Mariner). It was a step up from the pilot given it actually made me chuckle a few times. So, with restrained expectations I found myself looking forward to a new episode.
Unfortunately, this was another zero laugh excursion. O'Brien at the end was cute, but cutesy name drops aren't going to give the show a pass if the actual content of the series falls flat.

I think they are in a precarious balancing act. Trying to keep it humorous without totally pissing off the internet loudmouths.
