A Trek series set in the present?

It wouldn't surprise be if Georgiou wound up in the present day and founded Section 31 to defend Earth against alien threats/steal alien technology to try to get back to the future.

Rather like a Star Trek: Torchwood.

Now that I'd watch!

No starfleet to bother her either.

Why not?

IIRC that was the original plan for the Section 31 show - that Georgiou would go back to the present, and it would be set there. They've decided to retool as Discovery has continued to develop however.

I think it's a bad idea sending MU Georgiou back in time however. I mean, given her resources and technological knowhow, she'd end up running the fucking planet in another decade, totally destroying the timeline.

They could always do this idea in reverse and bring present day characters to the future. I always kind of like the idea of focusing on those aliens that abducted Amelia Earhart. Or you could have a Hippie lady from 1969 and a New York City cop from 1975 and British Royal from 1865 and a nerd from 1996 and Russian Submarine Captain from 1970 and a 2020 High School Teacher and a American Slave from 1860 and Andy Kaufmann for some fun. They all find themselves aboard a Federation Timeship were the crew is dead and the ship is adrift in this new future were the Federation is gone and they got to work with some local aliens to survive.

Long before Torchwood, Earth bound Dr Who worked reasonably well with UNIT, the Brigadier, etc. Assignment: Earth, as mentioned above, is an already established part of Trek and would be the obvious starting point if set in the 2020's. Who is that species giving these agents their tech and are they known in the 23rd-24th Century? A lot of possibilities there. Alien tech/incursions, time travelers, Temporal Cold War, contemporary Government agencies, etc.

I do think a WW3, Col. Green, First Contact era setting has a lot of potential also, but that is not set "today". Thats decades from now.

Star Trek: Sanctuary

Looking at the beginning of the Sanctuary Districts across the USA, whilst the Eastern Coalition forms and tensions between major powers steadily increases, Colonel Green stirs the pot with his illegal and immoral genetic experiments, leading to World War 3 in 2026.

Bleak, dark, depressing dystopia, yup sounds about right for the world today.

Don't think I'd be interested in a series though. Not enough aliens!
Do a kind of Men in Black? They come to present day Earth, and there's a alien community that they interact with, obtain support from, and sometimes hide inside.
I do think a WW3 ... Thats decades from now
Apparently not all fans give a toss about canon, so "adjust" the dates and have districts and a nuclear war and a first FTL flight and a first (second, third, fourth) contact.

Present day.

Follow some fans suggestion and have the eastern coalition be the east coast of the United States.

Because China would never "let" Hollywood depict them as a enemy opponent.

Sure, if it is an alternate timeline then you can do whatever you like. There doesn't even have to be a WW3. I would toss the districts and the war if we are free to have the timeline however we like. Gary Seven-esque in 2020/21 and then whatever history you want after that.

Who said it was China as the leading force in the ECON? My money would be on North Korea doing some batshit crazy stuff to wind other nations up and push them all to the brink of war, then launch covert missiles at both sides to make sure that no one can learn what they're up to.

COVID was actually released by a group of malevolent aliens that want humans wiped out because they become to powerful as members of Federation

I can see Pakleds landing in Russia, maybe having read something from Picard about unexpected first contact scenarios, and them going on about how humans were’nt ready for the tech—and then the rifle butt to the back of the head. They are in the Gulag, and then we see an ENTERPRISE type opening, with Energia and N-1, GIMBAL, etc.

Someone goes and attracts the Vegan tyranny, and we see Khan’s secret war, etc.

Not as a full series, maybe a comic book, but I think it would be interesting to do something like Guardians of the Galaxy with a modern earth person whisked away by some aliens and then traveling around the galaxy on a spice freighter. I guess this is kind of Buck Rogers or John Carter, which could be good but probably not.
Or do an alternate universe thing kind of like Stargate and have modern Earth get warp drive now and get out into the galaxy. Trump and Putin and Xi Jinping fielding offbrand Constitution-class ships in a secret war against the Klingons and Romulans, whilst looking for leftover weapons of mass destruction from all the old races to protect this planet.
