A Trek series set in the present?

Today I had an interesting thought. What if we had a Trek series set in 2020?

The basic premise of it is this: First Contact between humans and Vulcans happened in 2063. However, we know there were numerous alien entities who within the Trekverse had visited Earth at an earlier point. The earliest of these known contacts was the "Sky Spirits" visiting the ancestors of Native Americans 45,000 years ago. The latest example was the Vulcans from Carbon Creek crash-landing in 1957. On some occasions humans even left Earth (the Native Americans rescued by the Preservers, the humans in the Enterprise episode North Star. So even pre-contact, Earth was kinda a leaky sieve.

Thus it would not be surprising to think during Trek's 2020 aliens are coming to Earth, and humans are leaving Earth. Maybe you could have a situation where a human stows away on an alien spaceship or otherwise ends up stranded in space, and you end up with a Fascape/Guardians of the Galaxy type situation, with one fish-out-of-water human in a cast of aliens? Maybe you could have an X-Files/MiB like series where the government investigates all of these abortive first contacts and keeps them under wraps? It seems like there's a lot of potential here.

I like the idea.

It would be nice to have something handled more successfully than Galactica: 1980....although I confess to liking that a lot more than most people do.

We've had multiple episodes (and a film) set in the present day, and others set plus or minus one hundred years. I think the concept works better as one-offs/multi-part episodes.

Just yesterday I was thinking of a film set during World War Three. Thoug if a film like that would be made, it would probably be quite a dark film, in which it might be best not to use Star Trek -branding on a film like that.

It would sweep all the awards though ;)

It wouldn't have to be necessarily. You could combine the world war iii setting with the secret alien contact concept so that you have this dismal setting of Earth at it lowest point as the background of some hopelessly idealistic dreamer finding out about the whole wider universe and all the incredible possibilities that might be waiting for humanity on the other side of the meat grinder.

I've been thinking of this idea for a very long time. A Trek show set in modern day times. I even like the idea of going back and doing a Watchmen style Trek show. What if the TOS Enterprise crashed on earth in the 60's during one of those adventures in the past. This changes the world in completely different ways. America uses tech to destroy Russia. No Vietnam War happens. The British have Spock held captive. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates figure out how to work subspace and create holodecks in Silicon Valley starting off in the 80's. Neil Armstrong and NASA went to Mars and back in 1969 using a Starfleet shuttle.

Only a handful of people survived the crash including Spock and by the time 2020 happens Spock and Kirk are the only two still alive. Kirk is a totally broken man. He lost his ship, most of his crew is dead and his friend Spock is tortured for tech info. My idea is the show would be a cross between Black Mirror and the Watchmen in that it would be a society that reflects are own but shows how that Trek tech actually made things even worst for people and created more fascism in the world and more inequality.

I'd love to see them take a shot at Assignment: Earth. Something that would clearly have Star Trek's DNA, but from another point of view.

What if the situation was Temporal Cold War-ish (yeah, I know, hang with me)...somebody from the future is trying to prevent Earth/the Federation from becoming a major power by altering things in our present. The protagonists' mission is...to make sure World War III happens on schedule.

I wouldn't mind an extended arc of say the Discovery crew ending up on present day Earth.

Don't think I'd be interested in a series though. Not enough aliens!

It wouldn't be surprised if Georgiou wound up in the present day and founded Section 31 to defend Earth against alien threats/steal alien technology to try to get back to the future.

Rather like a Star Trek: Torchwood.
