I've been gone two days and didn't read the whole thing. :/

I'll cut-and-paste it if I ever get a chance to use it in the future...

Slightly surprised that Amazon Prime has all 10 episodes of Lower Decks, but then it did air in the US months ago, so there'd be no point doing them weekly like with Picard, or Discovery or Mandalorian on their platforms.

Watched the first episode. Hm. I feared it'd be Futurama meets The Orville but with a licence and canonical Trek stuff. And it totally is. Didn't laugh once, did enjoy the 24th Century vibe, and the various easter eggs and references, and the fact that the CMO is a Caitian. Really annoyed by the entire cast apparently not grasping that the microphone is in the recording booth with them and so they don't have to yell for the kids' in the audience's attention. Somebody tell me that improves, though it may just be that I'm not in the mood cos my online day has been so shit. But I really hope they improve cos otherwise 24 minutes at a time is about as much as I can take of it.

    The rapid fire shouting stays.
It’s getting less grating in between progressively better plots and characterizations, though.
I binged through the’s through the whole show yesterday on the promise that I would like it by the end of it.
It didn’t happen all at once, but gradually and I was finally sold a couple of episodes before the finale which hits every home-run possible.

Due to circumstances never got to start it yesterday but insomnia comes in handy so started the series now. Have to say one episode in and my faith in Trek is restored. The look is on point, the characters are engaging, the writing is solid, it’s raised a few chuckles, and is a great spin on looking at the universe—it’s made a far better impression in 30 minutes than Discovery did in 2 hours.

Just watched episode 1, and my feelings are mixed. In some respects I like it. Futurama is one of my top 5 series of all time, and this definitely had an irreverent Futurama vibe, although alas it succumbs to the current tendency in American animated series to have most of the characters be manic and shouty (Mariner is particularly insufferable). Also, I don’t know if I’m alone in finding it irksome that nowadays, particularly in comedy, the female characters generally get to be strong and capable, but the leading male characters have to be pathetic and useless.

I find it ironic that a lot of the fans who hate DSC and PIC, as well as the ‘cannon warriors’ seem to love Lower Decks. For me, I can’t quite reconcile this as being in the Trek universe. It has the settings and the species for sure, but my brain just CANNOT reconcile a goofy animated series with bizarrely hyperactive characters as being set in the same universe as the live action Treks. Maybe it’s just me and a touch of OCD. But, I think I will enjoy this series more if in my head it’s a different universe entirely. That’s if I get through the rest of the season. I aim to.

I agree with your second paragraph here. It's hard to imagine this as a Star Trek show because of how radically different it is to anything else. When I finished the first episode, I wasn't that desperate to start episode 2. Not because I didn't like it, it just feels like something you could watch one or two of at a time, rather than a series you could binge watch. I'm going to watch through the whole series and give it a chance but I won't be too upset if it doesn't hit home.

And I say that as someone who hates how DSC fucks with canon so much.

Lower Decks is simply a overdramatic retelling of events that happened in universe. No need for separate universe and the precious canon is preserved.

I basically binged it in about 2 weeks. I'm a little nervous to show it to my kids, but I loved it. You can't take it seriously, it's a lighthearted take on trek and that's all it needs to be.

I showed it to my 8 year old and she loved it. She laughed at the beeps over the bad words. Not like she hasn't heard it all before from... somewhere. :shifty:

I think people overestimate how sheltered their kids are..........if they go to school, chances are high they know WAY more than you think they do.

Just watched episode 1, did not make me laugh, the best character is the Caitian CMO, so far Mariner is annoying

I was sort of thinking the same thing myself. The very last episode ever could end with a reveal of a real-life Boimler, who had retired from Starfleet, recounting tales of his adventures to his grandchildren.
