Uh, that makes no sense. First of all, of course I know that LDS is set after DS9. Second, how can you blame DS9? I guess you don't realize that ENT and DIS were filmed after DS9?

Or, a very easy in-universe explanation that blames nobody is that in ENT and DIS days, section 31 was less secretive. Then sometime during the 100 years between DIS and DS9 they had a reason to become much more covert and mysterious, until DS9 and Basir.

Maybe if the Section 31 series ever happens, we will be shown the events surrounding S-31's decision to become a deep underground organization.

They seemed pretty secretive when on Enterprise, IIRC. I think that’s where the rub comes in. They were secretive, then they weren’t, then they were again.
In ENT they were secretive, but maybe secretive like today's NSA; people have a vague knowledge of the NSA, but no knowledge of how they operate or what their mission is. Granted, you’re right that S-31 was less secretive and more known-about in DIS than in ENT, at least more known-about among Star Fleet personnel.

Maybe (in my in-head explanation) this trend towards being more known-about between ENT and DIS did not sit well with the honchos in charge. So they took it upon themselves to become more secretive again -- even more secretive than the CIA is today; so secretive that people begin to forget over the 100 years between DIS and DS9 that they even exist at all.

Besides the Vendorian, Ariolo, etc., there were also a couple of Aurelians (or possibly Skorr)!

A member of Morn's species top right.

I wonder if we'll ever see one that isn't bald? According to DS9, Lurians are not naturally bald like Morn is, they're supposed to have hair, it was the latinum he had stored in his stomachs that made him bald.

I could see them keeping the design bald just so they're recognizable as being the same species. There is bald one in DSC season 3 trailer, and bald ones in Lower Decks.

My personal explanation is that the events with Control and the conspiracy in TUC pretty much destroyed their credibility with Starfleet Command. So, the powers that be withdrew any funding, and pretty much let it die out. Thus the less centralized, cell like, structure rather than a centralized agency.

I have never in my life been angry with a TV show or a film. I do not understand the concept. I have been disappointed at times....sometimes I shut it off halfway through and go "meh". Life is too short to be ANGRY at a TV show. Seriously. Just watch what you enjoy.

You keep acting like I knew ahead of time that I was going to dislike the show. Even after the bad first episode, I went in with the slight hope that the second episode would be better.

And, fine, I totally get where you're coming from. There have been countless number of shows over the years that I started and stopped because I didn't like them. Obviously.

There is a (much, much smaller) number of shows that are awful, but that hate watching them is an entertaining experience in and of itself. I stopped watching Voyager in the second season because it was a bad show but also because it was BORING as hell.

But, to take a recent example, I finished the entirety of "Penny Dreadful: City of Angels", even though it was an unambiguously AWFUL show because watching the show continue to flail and fail was an amusing experience in and of itself. Whereas I only watched two episodes of "Cursed", a demonstrably better series, because it didn't grab me. It's neither a legitimate pleasure or at "hate watch for fun" kind of thing.

If hate-watching isn't your thing, I get it, but it's a real phenomenon and I'm certainly not the only person who does it.

Not sure yet where "lower decks" is going to end up on that spectrum. If the quality continues, as I said, I'll probably give it 2-3 more episodes. The fact that it's short and can be watch while I'm doing the dishes works in its favor, so it's a very small commitment to make.

I don't understand the rational behind hate-watching. Like, I get that it is a real thing but there are a lot of destructive behaviors that are real too and I don't get those either. The fact that people do it doesn't make it logical or rational.

And, to be clear, this isn't meant as a derogatory. Obviously, people can do whatever the hell they want. But, and this is more to my point with fans at times, why not invest time in things that we enjoy? Nothing is gained from watching something you don't like. So, I'll question the rationale behind such behavior because nothing is gained. You're not proving to CBS that the show isn't worth watching and you're not helping you're mood...

At the risk of sounding reductionist hate is an emotional energy I simply cannot invest in to a TV show.

So Boimler and Mariner are the same age. Last week we learned that Boimler was commissioned in 2379 and they had served together for a year already. If they are the same age, then that must mean they graduated from the Academy at roughly the same time. Yet Mariner served on FIVE different ships, rose in rank then got demoted back down to ensign already? How??? Is there something I'm missing here?
She is the Wesley Crusher analog

The difference is I believe Mariner actually knows what she is doing. Wesley was OK was he got the Academy. Before that...well, no.

Mariner ignores the rules. I don't she's better-she's just more willing to take risks and damn the consequences. And we've been shown that that senior staff are more about prestige for their ship.

Trained to know more and be better than the senior staff?

What exactly don’t you understand about her Dad being an Admiral and her Mom being a starship captain? She likely is far more mature than others at her level, especially considering she has been promoted and demoted already in her career.

And she isn’t the first character in Star Trek to question the orders of those above her. Not by a long shot.
