I'm allowed to have my opinion, and I think remarks about pulsating rods and "he's got wood" is a bit more extreme than fertility token (that you have to know what it means in order to get it) and a styrofoam prop that happens to look like a penis.

I'ts not pearl-clutching it's just, I PERSONALLY FEEL AND YOU IN NO FUCKING WAY ARE TO AGREE WITH ME AND THAT I AM ENTITLED TO HAVE MY OWN GODDAMN THOUGHTS ABOUT THESE THINGS that those kinds of lines are a couple bars too low than Kirk smirking at an attractive woman or some rock people see a penis in.

But sure, giggle all you want over lines about pulsating rods.
How is it more extreme? Honestly? It's the same joke, just more on the nose.

And I didn't say you were not allowed to have it. But, I'm going to question it's "out of place" when similar things have happen before. That's all.

@Trekker4747, calm the fuck down. As far as I can see no-one is saying you are not allowed to have your own opinion. I see people disagreeing, nothing more. And I certainly see no reason at all to scream at people in all caps. There are most certainly people who are in agreement with you that some of that humor is too childish and cheap. I know there are, because I am one of them. So again, take my advice, take a deep breath and calm down.

I'm just tired of saying I don't like something and then get accused of "pearl clutching" and thinking there's to be no humor at all and everything has to be stiff and serious all of the time.

I think jokes about holding onto pulsating rods is just a wee bit different than a fertility idol.

"More on the nose" is the definition of more extreme because it's on the nose and not, you know, off the nose.

For the record wood jokes are not funny to me. They are stupid and more annoying than anything else.

But, in my opinion, that's a humor that's been a part of Trek before and doesn't surprise me its there again. Especially in the year 2020 where we don't worry about slipping things past censors.

Then calmly argue your side without completely losing your composure and bearing. Going apeshit and locking caps will only result in you getting warnings. So keep it cool DaddyO.

As in everything, some things will land. Some won’t. And the reactions won’t be the same for everyone. No one expects everyone to agree all the time. And yeah, you put an opinion out there, be prepared that people might just, ya know, disagree with you.

Even though it's a completely different animal, if I have to place this series somewhere, I'd put it above VOY/ENT and just underneath TNG/DS9.

And you feel able to rank this amongst Trek shows based on one 24 minute episode?

So far these media reviews are bucking the CBSAA Trek show trend of great critical reaction.

72% and 76% on Metacritic, good, not great critical reaction. (3.8 and 4.1 audience reaction btw)

I'm able to judge these things pretty quick. I always have. In 1992, all I'd seen was TNG and the TOS Movies. Then I watched TOS itself. And it took me two episodes to realize I liked TOS better than TNG. "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and "The Corbomite Manuever" sealed the deal.

It took me three episodes until I realized I liked DSC as much as TOS. "Context Is for Kings". That one took longer than usual.

I don't need seasons upon seasons to judge things. I've been watching TV for 40 years. I can look at what's there, go with my instincts, and project. I assume certain things will improve or iron out. I take that into account.

Lower Decks, by its design, will never match TNG and DS9 in my opinion. But VOY and ENT were a slog. Lower Decks doesn't feel like a slog. That's why I put LD where I do. And I think time will bear that judgment out. If I turn out to be wrong, I'll say so.

I never get this thought. The idea that "you can't judge something on the basis of only a small amount released." The Shortest short trek or the smallest episode is the *easiest* thing to judge in the world, compared to some 178-hour long series. It's nearly impossible to judge all of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but nearly impossible not to judge an episode you can watch over a bowl of soup.

It's obviously comparing apples to oranges (I prefer apples), but we already compare TNG's 178 episodes to TOS's 79 episodes to Enterprise's 98 episodes. Adding in LD's 1 episode (or "1/2 episode") to the mix doesn't change much.

I thought the whole holodeck scene was pretty funny, including the Olympic bit and the Orion girl's reaction.

Interestingly, had they made it two guys lusting after naked girls, there'd be outrage on social media, but that's a separate conversation I guess.

Yeah, I am of two minds about this. One, yeah, you could take it as bad that anyone is portrayed as sexualizing other people (even fictional people even within itself a fictional universe).

On the other hand, part of the joke is trying to normalize it in the other direction, to say, "hey, if guys could do this, so can women. why should it be any different because of their genders?" Also, as others have pointed out, this is just humanity - today and in the future; even if we evolve most of our sensibilities, there are some things like sexual drives that are unlikely to change much without genetic engineering or social engineering (ala Surak). Also, within the universe this is a very safe and likely accepted form of diversion for the crew.

So until we get to a better place socially than where we are today, I can see arguments for and against trying to change the current norm by making jokes about it. But I think I come down for now on the side of its a joke and a good one and perfectly appropriate and realistic for the characters.

Fair enough. For me, it's a good thing I don't judge a show based on the first episode or two, after Discovery and Picard fell off a cliff half way through all three of their combined seasons. imo. I like to look at the whole run of a show to compare it to another.
