Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

To add insult to injury, the two units are not the same size. In the last photo, Scotty is working on the smaller unit. Also, it looks like that unit is closer to the big screen and the two units are closer together perhaps giving more room for the console.

Wait, those aren't the same size?

No they're the same size. Photo evidence of Court Martial and The Enemy Within show this, as well as Mirror, Mirror. I believe what you're seeing in the Naked Time screencap is just a matter of perspective and position. The units are not aligned with each other, and are staggered somewhat.

I think there was a set blueprint published decades ago (maybe from Making of Star Trek) that had those units facing each other, aligned perpendicular to their normal position. I don't know, however, if that configuration ever appeared on-screen.

Update: Yep, here it is!

We see the configuration in the “I, Mudd” screencap I posted above. The only times we saw the units facing each other was in Seasons 2, and this was only seen from the grating of the Emergency Manual Monitor Room perspective. In Season 3, there was only ever the aft most power unit present in the set, as the forward unit seems to have been removed to allow access to the "office" nook we see in "Elaan of Troyius"

I think the answer is to not make the port side of this expanded room a perfect mirror. We never go in there in the show after all, so just mirror the forced perspective tubes and the ceiling and do whatever you want with the rest, like that extra stuff we see in "Enemy" and only have the two units in there, perhaps moveable to allow for the different configurations of them seen in season one.

Ya, that photo really threw me off. Thanks for the correction.

Of course, when any fight breaks out in the engine room (i.e. Court Martial, Space Seed and Day of the Dove), the power units conveniently disappear to make more room for fighting.
One of Kirk's lesser-known standing orders, along with the mandatory installation of clubs along the walls of engineering whenever they brought genetically-engineered dictators aboard. ;)

Donny, any luck on your work on the Antares?
Nah, haven't gotten around to finishing it yet. One of these days.

Also, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I've switched back to the Refit project. I thought I was ready for some TOS goodness but the mood didn't stick and I wanted to finish up the TMP sickbay set I started a few months back.

Happy New Year!

I'm sure many of you noticed, but I've been on an extended break from doing any modeling not associated with my day job the last several months. I took a much needed break, did lots of meditation, got a promotion at work, and eventually got decided and got busy moving out of the house I was living in with roomates in San Jose into my own apartment in Los Gatos, California. Now that the move and the holidays have settled, I've been itching to get back into modeling my passion projects.

I started with another prop, because props are always a light re-entry into modeling, and I just enjoy getting super detailed with them. Years ago I started modeling the WNMHGB Phaser Rifle, but for various reasons gave up (my modeling skills weren't nearly as advanced), but the itch has always remained to bring that bulky piece of machinery to life. So in November, before my move, I started modeling it. I decided to break the rifle into parts, full detailing each component and displaying it in both assembled and disassembled modes, much like I did with the TUC Assault Phaser last year (or was that the year before?). I modeled the main body structures over Thanksgiving break, not touching it until about 6 days ago when I modeled the details and then gave it a good texturing pass and taking final renders tonight.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun coming up with what the "unseen" parts of the phaser rifle would appear, such as the connection points between the barrel and the rifle body. I also decided to make the aft panel a battery/power pack compartment, and designed what the power-pack may look like, based on the handle/power pack combo of the Phaser II. I did take a couple more creative licenses, such making the targeting screen a curved CRT monitor (like we see on the Tricorder) instead of the flat display with targeting reticle we see on the canon prop.

Anyway, here are the results!
First up are the images of it full assembled:

And here is the rifle in an "exploded" disassembled view, with close ups of some of the individual components:

I may do some schematic views (with call-outs) and perhaps some alternate color schemes to visualize what the weapon may have been painted to match the hand phasers of the regular series run. Stay tuned!

Hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday!

Congratulations on your promotion, it's very well deserved.
The rifle looks great. Are these renders from Unreal? If so, how did you set up the shader on the transparent section? I tried to get a similar scratched plastic look once but it didn't look nearly as nice.

Congratulations on the promotion and the move!
Wow, you keep raising the bar, this looks so real; particularly with the added modularity and all the interconnection details that you don't really see on the assembled rifle. Incredible!

These renders are from Marmoset Toolbag 3, which I use rather than Unreal to showcase single props.
