Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

Has anyone picked up a copy of those designing starships books from Eaglemoss? Are they worth picking up? I was thinking of getting the Discovery one.

Yes, I have all four of them and they are fantastic. Of course they are going to feature all the design articles you know from the magazines neatly in one place, but there's tons of additional stuff and the books themselves are just good print quality and very nice to look at. I find them to be one of the best aspects to come out of this whole project and I'm very much looking forward to another book in the series. So yeah, a definitive recommendation to pick them up! :bolian:

I came across the Eaglemoss Starship line just a year or so ago and have been very tempted to start the subscription. However, I have some reservations with it. For example, do I start at the beginning with the Enterprise-D and work my way down the line? Would I, in theory, still get all the ships in the subscription or just the ones they still have in stock? Or, since the original line is supposedly ending at 180, would my subscription be randomly cancelled mid-way through?

I appreciate any insight for those who might be in the know.

Speaking as someone who was a subscriber from the beginning, I can say that I don’t regret it for a second (although my checking account would disagree on some days). However! You should know that Eaglemoss’ customer service has been pretty dodgy in recent years. There have been big gaps in the series that started last year, gaps that may take several years to fill. You basically just need to be patient. I bought a few things from their online store to fill the gaps after about a year, only to finally receive them several months later, forcing me to flip them on eBay to recoup my losses. Now, you may ask, why are there missing issues in the subscription line when you can get them from the online store? The answer is, the store has its own stock that does not co-mingle with the subscription inventories. That’s just the way they roll. You will feel like the subscribers get back-burnered in favor of the online store. I have, as have most subscribers. It’s just a simple matter of acceptance. Some of the models also lack some expected detail. But for every one of those, there are 20 really nice looking models, and this line is the only place you can find many of these lesser-known ship designs. Tons of background ships, the Wolf 359 fleet, DS9 frankenfleet and so on. It’s very much a love-hate relationship, but I love it more than I hate it. Overall, I give them a solid “B” for the line. Of course, there is the Discovery line, the XL line, and they’re going to do Picard and likely SNW and Lower Decks. I also have their Battlestar Galactica line and am building their Back to the Future Delorean, which is an absolute monster of a model at 1:8 scale. One final thing of note, the ships are all “box scale”, meaning, they’re sized to the box they come in and not with each other. If you’re okay with that, then you’ll likely love getting into it. Their stocks, however, are probably going to falter soon when their supply line hits the COVID-19 wall.

That is very interesting to know. I have little interest in the alien ships and more so in the Starfleet ships. I was thinking that if I got the sub, I could just sell off the alien ships on ebay. I thought the subscription route would be the way to go due to not having to worry about tracking them down individually (which I could see being a nightmare).

Okay, I’d recommend NOT to sub, Items that are out of stock will be skipped. Half the ships are alien and will not likely sell well on eBay if they’re easily available on the webshop, Eaglemoss might move away from the sub model and suddenly cancel it - they wouldn’t want to be saddled with a sub for a collection that ended years prior.

Best bet is to use the discount codes like THANKYOU and pick and choose. Also, on the Facebook fan group sometimes people dissolve their collections, which is a good opportunity to get a lot of back issues for cheap.

The Orville arrived today and I took a couple of photos with it. It's a lovely model and an awesome design, but there are a couple of spots where they botched the paint job and although this is a recurring theme with the XL models, I would have expected it to have a somewhat higher level of detail. But still, on its stand on my desk it just looks awesome, as I hope you can see in the photos.

The biggest disappointment, however, is the magazine, which has zero content about the design process of the ship or how they built the physical model. A real bummer, as that's one of the things I most look forward to in the magazines.

That’s probably due to it being the magazine to the XL version. The proper, subscription model will probably have a magazine covering the behind the scenes stuff.

Yeah, someone last week put a few issues up on ebay, including the Vulcan Long Range Shuttle and T'Plana-Hath Vulcan Lander Specials (which I bought (both for £25)) which was nice as that was cheaper than in the webstore, even with postage prices added on. - I just need to go to Parcel Motel and pick them up, as the sale was technically UK only.

BSG Collection book has arrived!
Not through it yet but tidbits so far:
Botanical Cruiser
Resurrection Ship (probably un-make-able)
Orion class.
--> Does not include the B&C ships Demeter class, Loki-class Cyclops, Alert class, B&C era Jupiter class Mk. II (Galactica/Columbia in full armor)

Astral Queen
Zephyr (both seem doable)
Celestra - it's role as rearming vessel that can deploy drones totally matches up with how it's played in BSG: Deadlock!

I kind of wish they provided more detail to make it closer to the TOS version of the Celestra, which looked more like it was covered in model kit sprues than the Nu version, but it’s better than nothing. :)

I was just looking at my copy the other day. I never really got into the remake series, as I didn't like many elements of the pilot. It's not a bad book, though. I wish the civilian ships got full orthos rather than just single pages.

The pilot was as close as nuBSG ever got to the original series. It deviates far from it after that. I would heartily suggest you give it another try.

I admit, it's hard for me to decide. :rommie: One of the things I disliked with the pilot, at least at the time, was feeling like a lot of changes were made just to be different or which didn't really fit the series. But it's been years, and I'm not sure if I would feel differently now. I've heard some of the seasonal stuff is very good, and some of it is not.

Anyone getting multiple email notifications for the same order from Eaglemoss lately? I noticed this happening a couple of days ago.

Yes, I had that happening as well. Don't know what's up with that. I'm only waiting for the XL-Discovery pre-order, but got two dispatch mails in the last couple of days.

Not too many people talking about the main line anymore, but I stopped into my local store a few days ago and picked up #144: Gomtuu/Tin Man. It was...not that impressive.

My main beef is it has probably the most intrusive-looking seamlines since the 22nd century Tholian ship. Also, the wavy bright lines on the top and bottom halves don't really sync up.

Doing an organic-looking ship under this limitations is tough. It might've been better to do something else instead (like Degra's ship for the Ferengi shuttle).

An underwhelming ship design from an underwhelming episode.

Actually, I liked the episode. I just "living ships" (i.e. the "Farpoint" jellyfish, or the space baby in "Galaxy's Child") don't translate well to models, at least at this price point, and there were better picks they could've done instead.
