Starship design history in light of Discovery

It seemed, during the final attack on the sarcophagus ship, some of the torpedoes were coming out of the bussard collectors.

That's Darmok level bad.

Still, if you run out of torpedoes, why not shoe-horn a phaser emitter in there?

Not really, if you keep up with production design, then you'll know that making front-heavy design artwork is not really the industry norm, and the expenditure and volume of work by Discovery in that area is probably in the top .5-1 percentile ever designed for a TV show. It is simply rare to have that much work for TV. That is what the particular designer expressed to me

The designs on Discovery are quite popular I understand, and the Discovery collection subscription is only going on hold after 32 issues because of COVID (individual issues continuing). Eaglemoss's volume on Discovery was one of their largest ( a bestseller on Amazon) and out of all the eras covered, my favorite of the bunch.

It's not really sad at all, they produced a remarkable new design in several variations that appears to very much along the line of a majestic Sovereign/Odyssey standard, and no doubt when the scene is not a minute long or so, and the script requires it, they'll produce more.

Why so knee jerky??

Considering three movies = 6 hours and 1 season of Discovery = 10-15 hours, yes, you would hope they made 3 movies worth of material.

I wish they did that on Picard, and designed ahead, creating 4 or 5 different starship classes that could be used throughout the show's run, including the climactic action scene of season 1. Sadly, they didn't.

Unless you're part of the group of people who don't like modern Federation ship designs all that much, like those on Discovery or the USS Copy Paste, in which case it's a middling time for starship fans.

A "remarkable new design"? Oh please, it was a blurry, purposefully wide and low detail view of a hastily put together ship.

in several variations

They spent 5 minutes changing the nacelle caps.

Not quite the sweeping visual differences everyone on here called you out for suggesting a while back.

That's funny, from what I understand they're not popular at all and are seeng substantially fewer orders than the early regular Trek issues.

The glory days for Federation ship design are long passed now, and yes that's my opinion but it's no more or less valid than your own. So to you it might be a great time to be a fan of Trek ships, for me, not so much. Especially when you have 130 year old ships and shuttles showing up in the Picard era.

You keep labouring under the deluded impression that the fleet shot in the Picard finale was well received. It wasn't.

As if opinions on this very thread aren't enough for you, all you have to do is read the reactions on YouTube:

1 - The sequence from the episode and all the comments criticising the USS Copy Paste

2 - The fan edit

I had to put my DISCOVERY STARSHIP Subscription on hold back in March, cause my hours got cut at the Hospital.
(and then my boss told me to stay home completely, because she didn't want my 'death' on her hands ... I'm 61 and asthmatic ... she said when this all blows over I can come back)

Anyway, I started getting unemployment checks back in June and up till this week, I am making a whole bunch more than when I was actually working.
And according to the NYS DoL person I spoke to on the phone, I will probably be getting back paid to the actual date I stopped working in February.
(which means I'll be getting the State money + the $600 from the Fed. for about 11 weeks worth ... about 8k  ... of course 15% or that will go to taxes)

Long Story Short ...
I restarted my Discovery Subscription the first part of June.
Just got the "D-7 Battle Cruiser (Issue #26) last week, so I'm gonna be 2 issues behind from now on.
I'm not crazy about ALL the ships so far, but most of them are pretty cool and the extras included have certainly made the subscription worth the money.
They've even accidentally sent me two copies each, of the Discovery Shuttle & the Landing Pod.
When I called to let the Eaglemoss Rep's know and that I was sending them back, they said just keep them. (no charge)
I was quite pleasantly surprised at that.

I'm slightly considering ordering the "Lower Deck's" Starship, if and when it becomes available.
That'll depend on whether or not I end up liking the show.
(going by the bits I have seen so far, I'm leaning toward not)

Emphasis on fan. The fan edit was just fan service and not additive. In my opinion. Honestly, I don't want any Berman era designs in Picard. Its supposed to be moving forward not constantly referencing the past.

Not that Trek does very well at that. More's the pity.

Well I'll be damned. I wonder what they use that for, something nacelle related? I didn't realize they had windows down there either.
Could be for access to the nacelle control room (seen in TNG: Eye of the Beholder) which is above that docking port located inside the nacelle itself. Especially if the nacelle pylon or the Jefferies Tube is damaged in some way and it's too dangerous to use transporters so you have to take a shuttle to gain access or rescue someone.
