Or Preserver obelisks.
That's what the obelisks in the episode were designed after. I think it's mentioned in a commentary somewhere that they used that as a reference but turned them upside down.
Or Preserver obelisks.
And that image in her mind was clearly intended to be a Preserver obelisk. It was almost exactly as the one in TOS appeared. The Ba'ul devices may well be connected to the Preservers though it's never been officially established and probably can't be revealed to preserve TOS continuity.
I've wondered this previously, but it seems like Harbert and Berg were going for a Preserver connection for the Red Angel before they got fired and whatever they conceived had to be canned. And that image in her mind was clearly intended to be a Preserver obelisk. The bogus 1701- F looked too much like the ugly E; I would've expected a radical different design than that. I would love to see the designs voters actually appreciated, my hope it was something fun and an evolution of starship design and function. The STO 'Design the Enterprise-F" contest was one of the most poorly-run contests I've ever seen. On the surface, the idea was simple: fans could submit a ship design to the contest, and people could vote on which ship they liked the best. You could submit anything: a drawing, a CGI model, a photo of a physical model, etc. The only stipulation was that it had to be an original design that the person submitting it created.
But past that, it was a huge clusterfuck. The contest went on too long, people started submitting designs that weren't theirs, submitting silly things like Locutus's head with nacelles attached, the voting got skewed because you could vote an infinite number of times, etc. And then, once all that got fixed and the results came in, it turned out that it was the people at STO that made the winning choice, NOT the popular vote. So the fan vote meant absolutely nothing. And to add insult to injury, Adam Ihle won the contest for the drawing he submitted when others had made entire CGI meshes and different orthos, and they all got pissed at poor Adam for his simple ink drawing when Ihle actually didn't do anything wrong. It turned out that what STO really wanted was just a 'base' idea of a ship, that they would then refine to what they wanted, and they were not at all clear about that. So the people who spent a lot of time and effort on their designs were angry. And, quite frankly, some of the designs that were the top votes for the popular vote were far better than what STO eventually made, although lots of the submitted designs were really just modifications of the Enterprise-E and not at all original.
So the whole thing was just ugly. There were a lot of pissed off people, the winner got lots of undeserved crap (causing him to actually leave the TrekBBS because of 'winner's guilt') and STO ended up with a stupid-looking ship for the Enterprise-F. The only consolation was that the game was non-canon and the chances of that ship ever showing up on screen was practically nil.
I mean, that's what we got.my hope it was something fun and an evolution of starship design and function.
I mean, that's what we got.
I mean it looked evolved...![]()
I suppose...It looked like two ships we already knew about merged into one. That's not 'evolved.' Evolved would be a ship that would have a new type of propulsion system that doesn't require warp nacelles, or a hull that doesn't resemble a saucer like every other Starfleet ship we've ever seen.
I suppose...
Personally I am tired of new hull shapes in light of the events. And given the pushback against the DSC ship designs I doubt that any new design would be received well.
Like the Wells class? It looked like two ships we already knew about merged into one. That's not 'evolved.' Evolved would be a ship that would have a new type of propulsion system that doesn't require warp nacelles, or a hull that doesn't resemble a saucer like every other Starfleet ship we've ever seen.
