Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

Well, it looks like a lot of people were wrong on this point, just as I suggested: Variations of similar ships.

Um, what flavor you like of ice cream is your opinion, the fact they made variations on the ship in Picard is not an opinion.

I don't think anyone was arguing that, you can clearly see them in the episode.

Also regarding the opinion part, I thought you meant something else.

Lots of people argued it, to the point several said there was only one, full stop.

Clarified the original post, because there is actually a lot of material there. :techman:

Dekovic doesn’t actually answer the question that was posed to him.

And the fleet consisted of the exact same ship but with two nacelle variations and some lighting differences.
I’m glad someone noticed this after reading it with a critical eye. The question was never fully answered, just a vague shrug and “oh well, can’t make every happy” cliche.

Yes he didn't answer the question in the slightest, just a shrug of the shoulders and telling people they should be happy with what they got. Good to know that they're aware of the fan backlash though, so thanks for posting that rama.

Oh and this "variety of ships" that you keep talking about amounted to a couple of minuscule nacelle variations.

I disagree.

A 5 minute job in Maya, amounting to something 99.9% of viewers watching won't notice. It was pointless and only done so that they can see "it was a variety of ships".
And yet we're still here discussing it and they are being asked after it. Yeah, I would shrug and go "You can't please everybody" too. Not out of any mean-spirited way but just out of a general fatigued way of the obsessing over these details that cannot be missed or be struck down as being some sort of violation of some kind.

I am happy with what we got. That much is well known. More than that it makes sense in the context of the story and that matters more to me than what types of ships were present in the battle. If all these old ships showed up then the question could reasonably be asked "Where were all these ships 20 years ago?" as well as "Oh, wow, Starfleet hasn't updated in 20 years. That makes no sense."

So, what was present on screen made sense for the story being told and the context of the world as presented. And, no matter what, someone is going to find issue with it.

Yes, you can't please everybody.

Starfleet uses 20+ year old ships all the time, just as we use 20+ year old aircraft nowadays.

I know you don't care about such details, but don't dismiss people that do.

As for story context, if Starfleet suddenly had 50 new classes of ships that showed up someone would be able to come up with an explanation for that as well. You can explain away anything and it's getting a bit tedious seeing fans having to fill in holes every 5 minutes on these shows.

As someone who was fine with how the Federation fleet was depicted, I'm going to have to say you're wrong.

The guy basically gave the verbal version of this: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ instead of a definitive answer like the same model was used due to creative decisions, or there being something wrong with the other models, or to show a change in Starfleet's approach to shipbuilding.

I'm not. I am offering my opinion as to why it works based upon arguments made regarding other topics I've seen. I am dimissing it. I am acknowledging that it works in terms of the story. That's it.

I've been filling in holes since TOS. That is neither new nor offensive to me.

I know, I know, "Old Trek doing it is not an excuse." But, it's part of my fan experience. Always has been and always will be.

Or, as was already known, they only had a week to create the VFX for the final episode, but I’m sure Dekovic didn’t want to mention that.

I hope they finish the models of the the “copy and paste” fleet for the blu Ray. It was embarrassingly bad on screen.

It was, but it won't be fixed. Hopefully the backlash has suggested they put a bit more effort in next time.
