Lower Decks Trailer Analysis

Others describe her worse. :)
Repeating what other state doesn't make it any more accurate. And, oh look, we have a Discovery forum dedicated to that. I believe you'll find it filed under "Michael is Horrible because people keep repeating it so it must be so" label.

On to Lower Decks.

I'm not being a hater or anything, but I'm really curious how these conclusions came about in such a short trailer.
I've seen entire magazine articles written around disecting trailers. Shortly thereafter I stopped taking trailer analysis so seriously because it is a bunch of self-fulfilling prophecy BS predicated on the writer already having disdain for the material.

You know, it was only a couple of days ago that people were demanding a trailer and I was hesitant and this is why. The trailer added nothing except drawing black lines of hatred in a franchise that espouses diversity and celebrating differences.

I'm going to go watch Dharma and Greg, a show about actually celebrating differences.

At the risk of sounding extremely pedantic and simple-DON"T!!!!!

Who is holding a phaser to your head to do so? O_O Do you need help? Should we send someone to keep you from watching this like Malcolm McDowell in Reservoir Dogs?

I'm know they have. Still you're using a different definition of horrible than Jeyl.
Well, she did save a genocidal dictator who brazenly ate her victims in front of their own kind. And the reason Michael saved her? She looks like her old dead Captain. Plus she almost beat NuKirk's record of going from a diplomatic position to full blown 'I WILL KILL YOU!' in less than 20 seconds.

Now we have characters who will no doubt cause horrible events to occur and the only thing that will be on their minds is whether they'll lose their job.

That's awesome. But just because you don't want to see more of this doesn't give you licence to pivot the discussion somewhere else that has nothing to with Lower Decks.

So take your exit cue if you're really done. @Nerys Myk just showed it to you a few posts up. "Bye!"

I don't find Michael unlikeable and horrible because of her (terrible) writing, so much as her completely bland personality, how she speaks in statements, not like a normal person, and the cringeworthy over-acting of SMG.

The ship is probably my favorite TNG design.

I get the impression if the Enterprise-D looked like the Cerritos, and the Cerritos looked like a Galaxy, Nebula or Akira class you'd say the latter three are your favourite TNG design.

From the minute it was announced, the range of possible outcomes with "Lower Decks" has seemed unusually vast to me. There was enormous potential, but it's also the kind of idea that could easily tip into disaster. With each bit of news along the way I've grown more optimistic, and I think this trailer looks properly fantastic.

Can't wait for a full episode.

You and Nerys are not gatekeepers to this franchise and he does not speak for me.

A story about officers from the Lower Decks has been done in Star Trek before. Were those characters loud or obnoxious idiots like the one's we see here? No. They behaved like people. Adults even who actually had respect and understanding of what the upper deck crew were doing. Their aspirations for promotions came form the hopes their skills up to the task, not how much their hair is parted.

LaVelle from "Lower Decks" was, as were the idiots from DS9's "Valiant".

Adults even who actually had respect and understanding of what the upper deck crew were doing.

This sounds like exactly the wrong track to take with animation, sorry. Animation can let its hair down and be fun, something CBS Trek woefully needs.

You did hear it's a comedy right? You've seen comedies before, right? People doing funny goofy things, sometimes in a work environment. I've heard actual police officers describe Brooklyn 99 as the most realistic cop show they've seen. It's a comedy with Adults doing silly goofy things because thats what real people do sometimes. SHOCKING!!!!!

Trapper John, M.D. and M*A*S*H take place in the same continuity. One is almost entirely dramatic and another is a sitcom with a laugh track and serious material added for story impact and character development. One does not detract from the other nor does one make Trapper John a terrible character while the other depicts him as an incredible creation of Hollywood writers.

Trek will survive whether or not Lower Decks sucks.
