Discovery episodes to watch in preparation of Strange New Worlds

I still, despite my best efforts, I can’t take people who call discovery ‘STD’ seriously. As for your view that it didn’t get much better, that’s not the view of most who have viewed it. But a few episodes of a Trek show shouldn’t be a chore to a Trek fan.

Rarely, I'll grant. But not always. I'm a lifelong Star Trek fan, and it has instilled in me that we all need to move past our prejudices and embrace a future that is welcoming and understanding to all.

When I see people unfairly demonized because they offhandedly used the wrong abbreviated terminology, and whatever their input tossed aside because "they must be one of those" types of people, I get an adverse reaction in my gut.

This is not right. You know this, I know this, we all know this. Those using the STD acronym are human beings, fans of Star Trek to varying degrees, including across the spectrum towards Discovery.

I will defend to my dying days the rights of all Star Trek fans, of all mankind really, to use the STD acronym. This is the hill I will die on, if need be.

Just watch ST: D Season 2 in its entirety. If you dislike it, you probably won't care for SNW either. Pike is a BIG presence in STD S2.

Me? I'm REALLY looking forward to SNW myself. YMMV.
This.

Life is too short to try and cram in things to watch that you don't like.

I'm more than happy for you to perish on any hill you wish to. I, on the other hand, will still hold people using puerile jabs like STD in contempt. They're free to use it and I am free to judge them for their use. In turn, you're free to judge me for doing it. That's the beauty of freedom of thought.

I try not to judge people based on brief words or silly jokes. Two posts above you, Noname Given used "ST: D" unironically as a simple description of the show which he then praised. It does not always indicate contempt. It's three letters, accurately abbreviating from the first letter of each word in the series. Look at the context of the post and judge from there.

Discrimination knows many nasty forms, and you imply that everyone (even Noname Given) who uses the reasonably derived abbreviation to be worthy of contempt. That seems to be discriminatory behavior. It's just three letters. Nothing to get worked up over.

(...is what I tell myself, to less and less effect)

The real contempt I have is for people who shall remain nameless who call Michael Burnham a "Mary Sue" or complain about "SJWs!", which are both sexist and racist. Those things are contemptible because those behaviors and attitudes extend far beyond just their reaction to a TV show like DSC and are actually part their overall outlook in general.

The problem with using "STD" is that it's used as a pejorative by those people and others who don't like the show. And also that "STD" is better known at large as "Sexually Transmitted Disease". So it's used by bashers of the show and is best known as standing for a serious problem.

After three years, people should acknowledge that use of the acronym has sorted itself. If you're a fan of DSC and you call it "STD", then you're proceeding at your own risk. Most people will flag you as someone who doesn't like Discovery. Not just here, but anywhere else in the Star Trek community. Seeing that abbreviation will put fans of DSC immediately on the defensive and make those who think "STD sucks!" think you're one of them.

So if someone uses "STD" but they're a fan of the show, they shouldn't be surprised when someone takes it the wrong way. I'm familiar with Noname Given and his posts, so I know not to flag him as a basher, but someone new to the board might not know that and I can't fault them for getting the wrong impression at a first glance, if they're scanning through a thread and then see "STD" or "ST: D".

It isn't a reasonably derived abbreviation and anybody who uses it without the ridiculous connotation applied so often by the hate-spewers on YouTube is exempt from my judgement. In that case I simply forgive the ignorance as there's no attached malice. However, the vast majority do not use it like that. They use it as a cheap, puerile jibe. In which case, see my previous opinion.

I’d just watch up through If Memory Serves. That will give you a sense of Pike, and you’ll get his best moments. You’ll also know by then if you want to keep going. (IMO, the second half of the season is much weaker than the first, but it’s still better than season one.)

IDK - There was some really good 'lead up' stuff with Pike, Spock and #1 in the final S2 episode at the end there. But yeah, if you don't care for Anson Mount's take on Pike by IMS - don't waste your time. If you do, watch the rest of the season.

Good story telling should not require a TV viewer to have seen previous series. You should be able to skip Discovery and watch Strange New Worlds without feeling like you jumped into the middle of the story.

If you have the odd question about Discocery as you watch the new show, that's what these forums are for.
