News Captain Jack Harkness finally meets River Song...in Big Finish boxset

We might not ever see Captain Jack Harkness and River Song together on the show, but at least we'll get to hear them in next The Lives of Captain Jack boxset! Oh, Jackie Tyler is along for the ride, too.

Actor John Barrowman said:

“Alex Kingston and I have talked about this for years. We knew that the fanbase always wanted River and Jack to meet, or to cross timelines, and we just never knew when it would happen. Alex and I were always game for it and, thanks to Big Finish, this is where it's happening.

“It's like Jack is the male River and River is the female Jack. There are all sorts of comparisons in their behaviours and how they react; the verve and vivacious passion they have for solving problems; getting to the heart of the action and adventure; the determination to get what they want, but also the sadness behind both of their eyes.”

Co-star Alex Kingston added:

“I've always imagined that, when River's not on adventures with the Doctor, she's somewhere having fun with Captain Jack. I've always had that at the back of my head.

“John Barrowman and I get on so well, and whenever we've met at conventions, it's the one request that the fans have come up with more than any other. We have a lot of fun together so it's something we've both been pushing independently for. I was so thrilled to find out that our dream has come true.”
You can listen to the trailer here.

So we will finally find out how River got the squareness gun. Can't wait.

Damn, I completely forgot about it. I also forgot about Susan's War even though I pre-ordered it when it was first announced. I'm sooo far behind on my Big Finish listening.

I have the set but have only listened to the first story so far (the River/Jack one is the third). I am also very far behind on my Big Finish listening.

Tennant seems to have spent most of Lockdown recording stories for BF. He's done three box sets (this one plus two more), plus his appearance in "Out Of Time" and I'd assume he'll turn up in their "Time Lord Victorious" audios even if McGann is the main Doctor in them.

I've seen people put together River Song's timeline based solely on the televised stuff, has anybody ever put together a River Song timeline that includes her big finish appearances and all of her meetings with other Doctors?

Yes, there are a few. I have a (probably outdated by now) graphic that shows how very messy it is. It's on my computer somewhere. I'll look for it later and then see who the source is and see if it's been updated.

So it was Will Brooks who made this incredible graphic. This version is the fourth version I've seen (one up from the one I already had on file) but as you can see, it's two plus years out of date. I can't seem to find a more updated version. It looks like he's deleted everything he had on DeviantArt (undoubtedly because assholes kept stealing his artworks and putting their names on them) and I don't see anything new (timeline wise) on his Instagram, Tumblr, and official website.

I listened to the last two stories in the third Captain Jack set today, including the River/Jack one. It’s very good. What really makes it work is that it’s not just a quippy, smutty romp with timeline-jumping shenanigans (although it is that), but also a serious look at how the two characters might relate to each other given the ways in which they’re similar and different.

The whole set is strong, actually, probably the best Lives of Captain Jack volume yet. The opener is light and insubstantial— Jack and Jackie banter is fun, but this is the second time in three volumes they’ve gone to that well— but the middle story is a darker look at Jack’s immortality, and ends up providing a nice thematic complement to the others.

Great to read! I look forward to it.

Would I be missing anything if I haven't listened to the first two Lives of Captain Jack sets? I haven't gotten to them yet and I will eventually, but I definitely want to listen to this set sooner.

Each Lives of Captain Jack story is pretty standalone, so you should be fine. All you really need to know from prior volumes is that Jack befriended Jackie Tyler while keeping an eye on the Powell Estate during his post-“Parting of the Ways,” pre-“Utopia” period, which is why they’re taking a space cruise together in the first story of this set.
