Ah, that's right. I thought I had read she was involved in some other big film but I couldn't recall what.

The second Spider-Woman, Julia Carpenter, became the second Madame Web in a 2010 storyline. So perhaps the movie is about her instead of the original.

Marc Guggenheim Scripting Spider-Man Universe Heroine ‘Jackpot’ Movie For Sony Pictures

She was sort of a weird gimmick character who showed up early in the "Brand New Day" run of the series. Spidey initially thought, and we were supposed to think, that she was Mary Jane Watson in a mask, since she looked like MJ and was named for her trademark line ("Face it, tiger, you just hit the jackpot"), but then she turned out to be someone totally unconnected to MJ, so it was all a lame fakeout. I wouldn't have expected her to have the staying power to get her own movie.

I've been working my way through the comics with her recently, and I like her, and I'd be willing to see a movie focused on her.
Marc Guggenheim was a member of the rotating team of writers on Amazing Spider-Man when Jackpot was introduced, and even wrote a Jackpot miniseries, so he has a lot of experience with the character.

They had that with Silver and Black and then they canceled it. :(

I would normally make fun of Sony for their Spider-decisions, but somehow they got a lot of people to go see Venom. And worse yet, a lot of those people say they liked it! :vulcan:

I still haven't bothered despite Tom Hardy and Riz Ahmed.

Venom, at least, had history and a fan base. Venom was quite popular back in the 90s. Some of these characters Sony's queuing up are absolutely unknowns.

it really is pretty middle-of-the-road and never really quite decides what it wants to be. The banter between Eddie and the symbiote is amusing at times. It would have been an exceptional superhero movie if made in the 80s. It's much better than a lot of 90s fare such as Catwoman, Daredevil or Elektra, although I know that's not saying much. It's most noteworthy to me for having Stan Lee's last filmed cameo before he passed.

Of course. I meant more like once in a while Sony's boneheaded decisions actually work out in the end. Many people thought a Spider-less Venom wouldn't pay off. (Myself included.) Hopefully the second one will actually be good.

    You're not missing much. :)

Venom is a weird movie. It has parts that are entertaining in a bad movie way, but it takes entirely too long to get to Venom itself and Tom Hardy is putting on one of the worst performances of his career, especially with his accent which is basically just vague mumbling that is more frustrating then the laughable Bane voice he had in TDK Rises. I don't hate Venom, I even own it on DVD, but its not a very good movie.

Then again, I still enjoyed Venom a lot more then the two MCU connected Spider-Man movies, so I guess I'm more interested in Venom 2 by default then any other upcoming Sony Spider-Man project (except a potential spider-Verse 2, which I hope happens but I doubt it will at this point). At the very least, Woody harrelson will probably be fun as Carnage, so if nothing else Venom 2 has that going for it.

Venom is one of the most popular Spider-Man villains out there. He was popular in merchandise long before Spider-Man 3, and pretty much has a fan base in of himself.

I am no Venom fan but it comes has no surprise that people when watched it and enjoyed it.

And yet Miles Morales, Ghost Spider, Silk and Jessica Drew are all still sitting over in the corner waiting for some - any - live action appearance while sony makes movies about friggen Kraven and Morbius.

(Though, to be fair, I guess we still don't know for sure if they're actually allowed to use Jessica Drew at all.)
