Which uniform did you like better?

Which uniforms were better?

There's something pajama/cheap Halloween costume to the first uniform. That being said, I wouldn't have minded the FC uniform being an administrative uniform and the previous version a "working" uniform. So O'Brien would have been in the previous version when he was working on the station core, but the FC uniform when he was serving with Ops. Same with Bashir. But the Ops crew would have been in the FC uniform.

I know the costume budget wasn't unlimited, but I do prefer options. I love seeing how in the movies, Scotty got a few choices, depending on what he was doing, Kirk had his alternate jacket in The Final Frontier, McCoy had medical options, and of course, I loved the away team coats from The Wrath of Khan.

I actually liked how it looked on Picard. Though the camera did do wonders for the TNG uniform. I just think the thicker material made it look more professional.

^ I actually didn’t like that because of that. They were wearing carpets. That’s not comfortable or functional.

I like the uniforms from season 1-4 better.

Those with gray shoulders were quite boring.

I always wondered why Starfleet change their uniforms so often. I thought it was Starfleet and not some fashion company.
I think movies should be separate from the TV counterparts, and I thought having the FC costumes on DS9 cheapen my view of them. DS9 lost it's ownership and identity when they lost their own uniforms to VOY; that was their uniforms and the producers decided to give those beautiful outfits to the series they really cared and had their investment in... Star Trek: Voyager. The showrunners never believed in their own concept of DS9, desperate to be liked they sold out on the premise: They brought in a starship, then they brought in one of the most popular TNG character to be part of the cast, then bend over backwards to bring in the Klingons to start a war, and later borrowing the FC uniforms, all just a stunt to bring TNG viewers in.

Strangely, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was looking at convention-recreations of the FC and TNG uniforms in PIC instead of the real deals. But I can't put my finger on why.

Agree 100%. That’s why I mentioned it earlier. Data looked like he was in cosplay, for my money. It think it has to do with the camera lenses and lighting. On TNG the uniforms looked better than the same ones do in person. PIC should have remade them with different material or just shot them better.

I really liked that Voyager used DS9's uniforms, and that DS9 switched to FC uniforms.
'twas a nice bit of universe consistency.
See that didn’t make sense to me. Sisko arrived at DS9 in the standard uniform, then changed into the work version. But then Voyager goes out not in the standard but the work version? And once Voyager made contact with the Federation, how hard would it have been to send the new uniform pattern out? They were replicating whole shuttlecraft, with individualized kitsch sci-fi controls even, but they couldn’t uniforms? That might have been an opportunity to boost morale. “Welcome back to the fleet.” But the corporate overlords wanted to maintain the reset button above all.

That said, I didn’t buy that the DS9 uniforms were the work variants. The station was plenty clean after a few days. The Defiant always was. And they switched directly to the carpeted standard FC uniforms, not that uniform’s work variant.

Starfleet seems to be in a constant state of change. Nothing may reflect the continually evolving nature of Starfleet to the public better than their uniforms, IMO. Some uniforms could be in service for decades (like the ones in Star Treks II-VI), while other designs could only be around for a few years.

IMO, the "Monster Maroons" are -- while not necessarily dress uniforms -- where certainly primarily a Class A uniform modifiable to dress uniform or down to semi-formal Class B, and it's not uncommon for formal or semi-formal uniforms to endure with minimal changes, whereas everyday uniforms (Class B and below) are more likely to tweaked to reflect changing circumstances.

I believe that the assumption that the coveralls are "work variants" are that they do exist in parallel to the more formal "shirt and pants"-style of TNG and there are plenty of parallels in RW practice (American ASU (late 2000s to 2020) v Army Combat Uniform for instance).

It's even possible that the outbreak of so many threats to the Federation in the late 2360s/early2370s prompted Starfleet to go for a more unified and less color-driven design with the "First Contact" uniforms.
Which confirms my opinion that one should never make changes just for the sake of changing.

Just look at those ice hockey teams with no culture (mostly in Europe) who changes their jerseys and even logos for each and every season compared to classic teams like the Chicago Blackhawks and Montreal Canadiens who have had their classic outfits for many decades. That's tradition and culture. Respect! :techman:

I've always assumed that the season 1-4 uniforms were a roll-out. Perhaps, like is implied in Discovery, the uniform was rolled-out to new facilities and ships, first. Pike explains that the TOS style uniform was rolled out to the Constitution class first. Likewise, being a newly Federation-administered station, DS9 could have been given the newer uniforms first. Then, ships launched after that could have been issued the uniforms, as in the case with Voyager. By the time of Generations the two piece shirt and pants uniform of TNG seasons 3-7 were being phased out. Starships launched prior to the new uniforms could allow crews to wear either one, whereas Starfleet HQ itself could have been the last hold-out (hence why Sisko is back in the TNG uniform in "Homefront" and "Paradise Lost.").

Shortly thereafter, in an attempt at uniformity in Starfleet (excuse the pun, but also, don't since it was intentional), the TNG movie era uniform was instituted fleet-wide to all ships, bases, etc., with the admiralty as the only group with a slower adoption.

In Voyager's case, it may have been more energy intensive on the replicators to create a whole new uniform style for everyone than it was to upkeep the older style. If you're stranded in a different quadrant, which would you prioritize, replicating shuttles or uniforms? Yes, they were arguably wasteful in the manner that they did it, but that doesn't mean a potentially more demanding new pattern should have been used over general maintenance of the current uniforms.

I'm actually fine with them keeping the pre-movie uniform while they were in the Delta Quadrant, even after contacting Star Fleet and continuing contact on a regular basis. There's the replicator explanation, of course, but changing uniforms was probably not high on their list of priorities.

I vastly preferred the FC-style grey uniforms.

Not only do they look more professional, but they get closer to the ideal of not having different colored uniforms at all (they only ever existed for the benefit of viewers at home).

Uniforms are replicated on a regular basis (every time somebody puts one on for the first time each day), so it wouldn't use any more energy to use one pattern over another.

For years I thought the FC uniforms were very sexy to be honest. But as time has passed I've come to enjoy the older uniforms and the color to them. The way I see it the gray FC uniforms had a more military feel to them which is where obviously seasons 5-7 went while the earlier and more colorful uniforms gave that more discovery and exploration based feel of Starfleet. It's that feeling of Starfleet I appreciate the most.

It didn't help my viewings of TNG movies; there was nothing special about the FC outfits if it could transition to TV so well. Just shows why Rick Berman should've never been hired to be the motion picture producer for Star Trek; he's best for TV... like DS9.

Would not any uniform they came up with for the movies also transition to the shows, regardless? Perceived specialness or not?

Not if the producers grew a brain and set TNG movies ten years later. Avoiding the entire question entirely. These stunts were done to help DS9's ratings which it didn't. DS9 had it's following and it wasn't going to improve, but having the FC costumes seen on TV and as well on the silver screen feels more of the same. I don't think it helped, I know the movies were crap but visually I don't think having those costumes be interchangeable from movie to TV didn't help.

New costumes for DS9 was a ratings stunt? Hurt by TNG movies being made when they were?
DS9 was the tail to TNGs dog, you have things a bit backwards here.

I guess everything offends somebody somewhere. This is a new one to me.

Worf was a ratings stunt for DS9 and if the continuity be what was the FC uniforms would eventually come in. All the same.
