I'd be OK with never seeing the return of Trek to the silver screen, at least for a decade or so. Let CBS have its go. The production quality is just as good as motion picture, and we get much more than just a product every 3-4 years.
Don't see why we can't have both...?
Well, I see it as a possibility in the next 5 years. Specifically, I would look at the Kelvin crew, if not Pine, then Cho as a Captain Sulu and you have Star Trek: Excelsior as he discovers a large planetary system involved in local war. When a shuttle is stolen in the war Sulu must brave a war zone to recover it.I can't see another trek film happening in the next 5 years at least.
But then all the fans would complain about why they hadn't brought back Rand, Valtane and TuvokOr, entirely new crew.
And when the bring back Rand, Valtane and Tuvok people will complain that they can't stop holding on to the past...But then all the fans would complain about why they hadn't brought back Rand, Valtane and Tuvok![]()
All three of them? But then all the fans would complain about why they hadn't brought back Rand, Valtane and Tuvok![]()
I want both, but it's hard to disagree with the fact that the movies have lost their direction, any kind of momentum, and crucially, their audience. As much as I love all three Kelvin outings I can see another film with this cast doing sub 300m at the worldwide box office easily. I just don't see the appetite for it. The only way this can work is reducing the budget to 100m or so and not releasing it it smack bang in the middle of a load of other summer blockbusters, but this comes with it's own set of issues.
The answer to this problem is a tough one...
Reboot TNG? Their films didn't exactly set the box office alight when TNG was at the height of it's popularity.
A crossover with Kelvin and TNG? The Trek brand is nowhere near the strength of Marvel - the only brand to properly carry off these kind of shenanigans. Even DC has struggled with this at times.
The Borg? This relies on the traditional Trek fanbase, and not the younger casual viewers that the franchise needs.
A discovery movie? I think the show needs to try and reach the peak of it's popularity on the small screen before this is even considered, and even then it's far from a sure thing.
Something span off Picard? A non starter given Stewart's age for me.
Reboot TOS again? I think this will be met with the same eye rolls as the two spider man films before the MCU.
Something completely new and different? Totally unknown quantity that would struggle to make bank in my view. Would have to be something completely spectacular and a critical smash.
Basically the movie franchise has painted itself into a dead end in my opinion. I can't see another trek film happening in the next 5 years at least.
Ok. Five.Hey!

There are possibilities here.

Honestly, I'm not convinced. I think Trek is enjoying a resurgence and the film has potential. Now, I do think that a lower budget would be necessary. But, I think it can be done.Unless they got an absolute A list actor for the villain or some other role, and the film is critically acclaimed then I can't see this getting enough bums in cinema seats to justify it's likely costs.
But that doesn't mean this trek fan wouldn't be there on opening night.

Despite myself I shall remain optimistic.I think you have to look at the likes of the recent 'bumblebee' which did a lot less money than the other transformers films but had a suitably lower budget. I'm not convinced cho could headline a movie though, despite the fact I like the actor and the portrayal. A series, absolutely, but a Hollywood blockbuster? I can't see it.

Indeed. I don't think Paramount knows what to do it with their Kelvin side and its disappointing. It's unfortunate for me that only ones truly taking advantage of trek right now are stuck in telling stories in the prime timeline only.
I honestly am not sure about the regression. I think that Spock would keep on growing, but once he was assigned to Kirk he would have that period were he would perhaps withdraw and become more confident with his new crew over time.I already struggle reconciling Peck-Spock with the guy Nimoy played. If I have to ostensibly pretend the guy truly is a prequel of TOS Spock (versus being just a remake) it feels like the latter had a big regression.
