TAS made real....

I don’t intend to model every single design seen in “Time Trap, “ but rather a few key notable designs. If such a scene were ever to be depicted in TOS constructing that many miniatures to be seen only briefly in one episode could be construed as irresponsible in terms of budget. Today you could cgi as many different ships as you wish into a scene, but TOS simply didn’t have that luxury of resource.

Also TOS had already established that it was quite rare to see spaceships crowded together on the screen. The two exceptions I most immediately recall are the four starships seen in formation in “The Ultimate Computer” and the three Romulan warships surrounding the Enterprise in “The Enterprise Incident.” And in both of those examples the collection of ships were actually separate images composited together into one shot.

I think there is little doubt the collection of ships seen in “Time Trap” would be achieved the same. And because of the smallness of a ‘60’s era CRT television screen and its low resolution they could also get away with some rather simplistic miniatures representing ships further in the distance. Beyond that a mere line of dialogue could further establish the existence of dozens of ships not readily in immediate view.

The center section, forward nose should be more pointed. The large center hull of all three sections have a louvre or scallop feature on the hull sides. Also, the hull transitions are less rounded. Can't wait for detailing and coloring.

Preliminary renders. I'm not showing the aft end yet because it's not finished. The colours are not set in stone--at least not the main hull colour. I'm using a bit of forced perspective in these shots to somewhat mimic what we see onscreen. There is still a bit more detail to be added.

A lot of races sure prefer the two nacelle design. There must be something inherently common with the warp technology, i.e. at the simplest/breakthrough level, you need two parallel cylinders of warp coils to create a warp field around your ship.

“Forced perspective” means to make something with simulated perspective built into the object. I think you mean you are setting the camera position and virtual lens settings to force the perspective to match the drawing. Yes?

Okay, done with this. Yeah, it could be even more detailed, but for something that would be seen only briefly and possibly not that well I think this would suffice.

Looks good. But given how simple it is I'm surprised you didn't make the circular details on the front-top of the left and right hulls indented as opposed to being simple discs.

Next up. Rather simple looking, but interesting. Three somewhat pointy cylinders with one nacelle attached. In some respects this might be the most alien looking so far (other than the pod ship from "Beyond The Farthest Star"). Beyond this there are perhaps two more designs I will try to model before calling my collection of "Time Trap" ships complete.

Now, regarding the Bonaventure. In no uncertain terms I really don't like that design as it's such an example of lazy thinking. They wanted to show an Earth starship from 150 years previously so they just sketched out a clunky looking Enterprise configuration. Hell, I didn't buy that when I first saw this episode when it first aired and I still don't buy it. I think I would be better served by using something of my own--a conjectural design supposedly of that era. Stay tuned.

If one really wanted to fill up the background with ancient derelict ships one need only toss in some interesting shapes with little to no real detail give they would be viewed as if from a great distance.
