Contest: ENTER April 2020 Art Challenge – Into the Arboretum...

It is Spring!* Warmer weather and longer days bring new growth, spring flowers, and the promise of brighter days ahead. Inspired by a weekend spent out in the garden, the final episode of ST: Picard, and recent Trek art by @Donny, @ashefivekay, and @Dryson, I've decided on a floral theme for this month's art challenge.

I'd love to see your interpretations of flowers & plants in Trek, whether it be a look inside a starship's arboretum, the plantlife of a Trek race's homeworld, a Kressari botanical cruiser, a bunch of flowers given by one crewman to another, or something else. Whatever it is, make it bright and colourful!

Here are the rules for the competition:

• the artwork you submit should be created during the month of the challenge**
  
• only one final image can be submitted (although it may contain multiple views)
• your final entry should be posted in this thread (although dedicated WIP threads are appreciated)

As always, you have until the end of the month - i.e. midnight (or thereabouts) Thursday 30th April - to come up with a botanical Trek something. Happy flower arranging!


* In the northern hemisphere, at least...
** Although, for those of you who may already have an arboretum/room on a CG starship that you'd like to use, feel free to do so but with a brand new planting scheme (i.e. redressing a set/model is fine)

Synthetic and Orchid Watch Sentinel - Inside the Mind Where The Butterfly Lives Forever

The photo was created from a photo take of Vega and then a Sharpen filter used to sharpen all of the pixels. Once sharpened the Emboss filter is used. The technique used to render such an image is a very delicate and time consuming process. You have to have just the right amount of attributes set in the Sharpen filter that allows the image to be embosses.

Based on Donny's very excellent skills at modeling, I think he would the one to bring this photo into a surrealistic reality that would fire the imagination of all viewers.

@Dryson, are you still working on Synthetic and Orchid Watch Sentinel? I only ask because, unless I'm mistaken, the image you've posted above is from March but the challenge requires a piece of art created/reworked/finished in April. I hope you are still working on it as I find it fascinating (along with your whole process) and would love to see you do a little more with it

@ashefivekay - A delightful scene with beautiful and unusual plants, but the star of the show - pipping Lt. Hames expression to the post - has to be the SnapDragon. Adorable - and dangerous?!

I can't quite believe this arboretum theme has garnered so much interest already - and we're not even halfway through the month. I was a bit concerned that no one would take to it, so I'm very happy to be proved wrong - and hopefully we'll get a few more entries as there's still loads of time left.

Just noticed the windows on the floor. That'd look great in the ship's lounge/bar, surrounded by tables whenever they are over a planet, looking down toward a beautiful coastline.

That's a great idea, @Finn! Those big windows in the ventral side of the Galaxy-class could almost do the job (as can be seen in madkoifish's latest work, here).
Actually, those floor windows just show a holographic image of space, as the triangular criss-cross is a Vortex Grid from 80s British game show, The Adventure Game (as is Rangdo, the aspidistra on the pedestal).

I like where your arboretum is going, @BorgMan, so consider it done I think work is going to keep me very busy all day tomorrow, so I doubt I'll have time to do anything here, anyway. So, why not throw Saturday in as well for any last minute tweaking, then I'll post the voting thread on Sunday. How's that? Plus, that might give @Michael time to pull something out of the bag, too.

So yeah, my idea kinda did pan out. Here's my entry. Sorry if it doesn't feature enough plants and flowers. Guess I'm more comfortable with drawing characters and technical stuff …

Felt good to do something analog again. I should definitely get out the sketchbook and watercolors more often. This was a lot of fun!
