Deanna Looked Great in Her Uniform

I always saw that scene as problematic. I'm fine with Troi being in the standard uniform (and think it might have been better to put her in one from the start, or at least have her in the skant with a pair of black leggings and normal shoes) I'm even fine with Jellico ordering her like that to drive the point home that he's an harda**.

But I'm not alright with the idea that a permanent change to the character happened because someone ordered her. I'd rather have the permanent change would have happened as a result of her promotion in "Thine Own Self" because SHE chose to make the change. As it is it looks like she was bullied into it.
It doesn't help that every universe in Parallels in which Picard died in "Best of Both Worlds" (and, in turn, in which Jellico never became Captain of the Enterprise) still shows her in her turquoise dress on the bridge, even if the universe was overall more militaristic, further implying the permanent change only happened because she was ordered.

So basic clay I would have preferred: Uniform under Jellico -> back to causal attire under Picard -> Back into the uniform starting with Thine Own Self.

In season 7 she did alternate a lot between uniforms so it wasn't really permanent (though I think the standard generally was for bridge scenes), let alone forced permanent change. I think it's plausible that a bit before "Chain of Command" she had become more interested in the command aspects and did just choose to use the standard uniform more often though a while before outright taking the command/promotion test.

I liked the idea that Troi got to wear different uniforms over the course of the show and that she eventually got the blue uniform. It made the show feel more realistic, like there's a passage of time.
However, I didn't like her in that uniform because it made her shoulders look more broad. It made more sense, but it didn't look as good. I think I liked her in the initial black/grey outfit with that vertical bun. She looked attractive yet slightly alien. I think she looked best in the green dress though.

I always thought the season one outfit looked unfinished, especially the neckline. It seemed to me like they just cut a circle into the fabric to give her cleavage and called it a day.

^ At least, now we know why Worf is wearing that sash, he's the only one without visible cleavage.

I agree, it does look oddly appropriate.

The circle cut S1 outfit does look a bit unfinished now that I look at it. I think they changed it up because I've seen the same one but with a better v-neck cut.

Yeah they seemed to have re-cut it several times in Season 1, they also changed those weird belts she wears a couple of times, I think there's (at least) a pink one, a green one and a grey(ormaybe purple, it's so difficult with to tell with the lighting they use a lot of the time) one.

I'm currently watching Season 6 and I have noticed for quite a while after Chain of Command they seemed scared about showing Troi on the bridge, or really, showing her at all.
She's hardly in the next 10 or so episodes, and if she is it's either in informal settings where's she's back in her red/purple jumpsuits, alternate universes (tapestries) where she's back in her civilian jumpsuit, or in exceptional circumstances (like Face of the Enemy) where she is wearing something completely different, along with some, often *very* short scenes of her being in her uniform sprinkled through, such as her sole scene in Aquiel where she just mutters one word and gets a couple of close ups (and even then her scenes in a uniform in Ship in a Bottle are implied to be another of Barclay's holograms, while the "real" Troi in the ready room at the end is back in her civillian jumpsuit)
Especiually her absence from bridge scenes is notable imho.

It seems like there was either some disagreement behind the scenes about the costuming, or they were scared about fan-backlash over covering Troi's cleavage...
Could it be that they waited for fan reaction via letters until they decided to make the switch permanent? Or that they were still in the process of deciding for themselves whether they liked the look?

Exactly, since men were actually wearing similar uniform code in "Encounter at Farpoint", before the weight gain I could see Riker in this. Men wear kilts and is not deemed inappropriate, and I thought this outfit was fine. Stop missing the point.

I just commented on this in another thread. I’ve long thought that these would have looked better without the sleeves and with a uniform-specific sandal or other footwear — the boot, meant for the standard uniform, is too clunky here. Maybe if it were an inch or two longer, but that’s a minor quibble. I think the overall would look vaguely Achilles-esque. Or Julius Caesar or William Wallace or...

You mean like Superman or Batman? They’re not actually comfortable, and I think that’s the point here.

The picture showed a man wearing what looked like black hiking boots. Deanna wore knee high tight shiny black boots. Deanna looked good.

There's always a path for improvement, and I would've been open to it; I love these outfits because of the unisex aspect of them. I wish Roddenberry didn't give up the design; I thought he sold out on them by making it a dress outfit.

Deanna Troi, I thought should've been in uniform on the bridge and not those cleavage inspired pieces she wore in a majority of the series; outside from the bridge okay, but I didn't think her outfits reflected the all of a sudden conservative vibe it sprung out in season 3 and beyond. She should've been in less form fitting outfits to jibe with what was done. I was never a fan of those thicker duty uniforms, I would get a chuckle how those impractical outfits would ride up from time to time, I guess it's a nod to Nick Meyer's impractical uniform code for extended space travel . The costume designers should've designed them like how Crusher's outfit was done, and of course Troi's duty uniform in season 6 &7 and Generations. Form fitting, but with Jonathan Frakes ever increasing waist line would've been a problem.
