Spoilers On Seven and sexuality

Being a strong, independent woman who doesn't feel the need to have a man to "complete" her life.

You didn't see the final episode?

She got brain surgery so that a really old man could take her virginity, and then the two of them could live happily ever after.

Hetero-normative bullshit.

I assume the appeal of Seven is she is kind of a blank slate personality on Voyager that people can see almost anything within the character. It's why she can be both a gay icon and teenage boy fantasy. I always saw her as the Domantrix or Ice Queen style sex fantasy which is something I figure appeals both to men and woman. Though if you take the catsuit away I think people's views on the character would change drastically. She would be seen more innocent and childlike so that catsuit went along way in defining our perceptions of her IMO.

I agree with the "hetero sexist bullshit" assertion of that storyline, of course.

Then again, that whole cortical inhibitor thing felt very retconn-y to me. Seven had always been portrayed as having emotions. She suppressed them at first, then later on let them show in controlled ways. I never doubted she had strog emotions, they were shown in subtle but clear ways, up to having tears in her eyes when particularly sad, touched, or similar. She just tried to keep them inside. So the whole "yeah, but she's always been unable to have REAL strong emotions, particularly, y'know, Chakotay-induced ORGASMS" angle felt... how shall I put it... forced. (Because those feelings would be stronger than, say, when she was sure she would die... sure, sure...)

A lot of people(me included)saw her as childlike/innocent even with the catsuit. I didn't see her style of dress as her personality especially since she didn't pick it out. Borg don't really have any fashion sense.

I know and Ryan does a great job in the role but it is kind of hard to separate all of that from the real world reasons for why she is in the catsuit and that is basically to sell sex. It's the most overtly sexural outfit ever given to a regular. The mini-skirts on TOS were still Starfleet uniforms and Kira's still looked close to her season 1-3 Bajoran military outfit and Troi's just looked bad. Like bad slinky pajama's. I can only imagine what people would be feeling if they had kept that first silver one for the entire run. I suppose they did do one good thing in they didn't go with the cliché all black skintight outfit and make her Catwoman looking. With the Borg being all black metallic tech and all it could have been a very easy choice. Me I would have gone with something like those silver workout clothes you see in "Learning Curve" were Tuvok has to train some Maquis on how to become better Starfleet officers. At least make the outfit look like something other people might wear beyond just Seven.

28 & 49 is obviously not a problem in the 24th century
If your old man balls start to sag, they put you in a mini skirt.

Sorted.

They are not from different generations.

She is completely alien, or was completely alien when she was liberated.

Seven will have no point of reference, to think that he is old, becuase she has no point of reference to know what young in 2377 looks like, not that she was young in 2377 anymore, on the cusp of middle age.

Or such labels don't matter anymore

If your partner will only listen to and watch 40 year old media, but you're trying to figure out what the latest new thing is, by running to large public venue after 11pm... There is a schism between your behavior.

I'd like to think that in the future, where we've mostly moved beyond petty racism and sexism, we'd have moved beyond homophobia as well. People are complicated. People who spent most their lives as part of the Borg Collective? Even more so. Seven taking some time and deciding that, like Dax, like Kirk*, she likes both sides of the aisle . . . that seems more then realistic.

My T'Pol/Hoshi fanfics, however, are just me liking that.
*Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

Jeri Ryan was born in 1968. VOY ended in 2001. Does the math in my head... 33 isn't the cusp of Middle Age. That's 40. (Can't believe I typed that... No. "Middle Aged" is whatever my age is plus five 10 years... )

Seven is 4 years younger than Jeri Ryan.

Thanks. That's helping my argument, not yours. ;)

29 isn't "middle-aged" or anywhere near it.

Retirement is at 60, or used to be at 60.

The middle between birth and retirement is 30.

I remember the the character Mary Tyler Moore throwing a tizzy, it might have been the pilot, becuase the demographics people thought that she wasn't a "young person" any more since turning 30.
