Ooh! What was D&D like originally? And was that campaign you were DMing fun?

It had its ups and downs, mostly because I dogmatically stayed with the old adventure modules from the time. The death rate was fairly high at first (normal for the time), but eventually most of the characters achieved 9th to 11th level over the 8 months campaign. We are all old time players from the late 70s and early 80s, and been playing some sort of role player game for the last 35 years. Old, old friends indeed.

That's great. Anyone's lucky to maintain friendships that long.
I've heard of the high death rate of the original game. Have you played other additions of D&D? How would you compare and/or rank them?

If you play OD&D the way it was meant to be played, 3d6 in order and 1d6 for HPs, it is a pretty deadly game. My 1HP cleric (Holy Schmidt) made it to second level (finally getting that spell slot!) before being killed by a wandering gnoll. :D But the first session we played, one of the guys went through 3 PCs, fun times.

My campaign used the first edition of AD&D and encompassed material up to Fiend Folio. I set the campaign in the World of Greyhawk and used all the old Gygax modules plus many others of the time.

1E was always my edition of choice. Now it's 1E/OSRIC with my daughters. But always a good time!

My only regret is the campaign ended before I killed them all off in the Tomb of Horrors.

Rredmond, I love the name Holy Schmidt!

And Henoch, how do you have a 1st edition game and fail to kill everybody?

I pulled my punches/gave advanced info, and was very generous on letting the group leave and come back recovered. My campaign usually had six characters (which is a small group) for modules designed for eight to ten. The goal was to progress through all the modules; experience them; not be caught in an endless slaughter house of first level characters.

    Hello,
I'm a new Star Trek fan. I'm 29 years old and I feel a bit late to the party...haha. I've just started watching "Enterprise" a few days ago, and so far I'm really enjoying it! My current plan is to eventually watch every series/movie. I'm really hoping joining this forum will give me the inspiration to actually achieve this goal. I'm looking forward to meeting you all and learning as much about Star Trek as I possibly can!

I started watching earlier than you, when I was 17 back in 2011. I started with TOS and went chronologically up until the first NuTrek movie.

Enterprise is a good series, although many dislike it.

Fair warning that TOS and TAS didn't age well. I found both to be... trying. The other series also have a habit of being a little rough in their first and second seasons while they find their footing. Persevere and you won't regret it.

I have a very similar goal. My goal is to watch every Star Trek episode and movie from before the Chris Pine ones. Once I'm done with those, I intend to sample a bit of the new stuff and see what I like.
It's taking me a while to achieve this goal because I'm not much of a binge watcher and there's so much Star Trek! There was a full year when I watched an episode of Star Trek every day, and I've been watching it pretty frequently before and after that, I still only saw about half of it.
Are you planning to watch just one show at a time, or multiple shows, or are you just going to go with your whims?

I plan on watching TOS after I finish Enterprise. I'm not looking forward to it, but I'm willing to give it a chance. It will definitely be interesting to see how this whole Star Trek franchise began.

I honestly had no idea there was so much Star Trek! It's almost overwhelming! I'm going to try and watch one or two episodes a day. It's probably going to take me a few years to watch everything, but it will be a fun experience!

Oh yeah! Somewhere between 800 and 900 episodes, I figure.
I watched a bunch of all the shows except the Animated Series beforehand. After I got Netflix, I started with Next Generation, skipping episodes I've seen before in my adulthood, and adding series whenever I felt like it until I was watching all 6. I finished the Original Series, the Animated Series, and Enterprise. Now I'm re-watching the episodes I've skipped over the first time, and then I'll be down to only 3 Star Trek shows... at which point I'll start watching the movies. So yeah, there's a lot of Star Trek. But you'll love it. Even TOS.

I was also pleasantly surprised that B’Elanna was available. I really didn’t have another good idea for what I would want for my username here. While I love TNG and DS9 - it wasn’t until Voyager when I felt I saw myself and aspects of my personality and identity represented on screen. As I return to Voyager every few years I continue to unpack the ways that I relate to her and her journey. Accept for Tom Paris, I never understood what she saw in him. I’m partial to Chakotay myself. :luvlove:

I was the same way about the name Tribble Threat. And I completely agree with you about Paris. I just find him annoying. I can really picture Torres with Chakotay

Wow... I have had an account here since 2011 (should have an older one, but things happen), but have almost never posted. I wonder what kept me away? Probably wanting my own website or something, who knows?

Well, I have returned! So to reintroduce myself, I have been a Star Trek fan more than 3/4 of my life -- I can recall watching the premieres of 4 of the last 6 series (TOS was before my time, though of course I love it now, and DIS took me a while to get into, as did PIC) when they aired. I have been writing fan fiction off and on for more than half my life. Have gone through several crews and starships over the years, but have over the last six years been fairly regularly working on a starbase crew as well as a starship crew, and have plans to narrow that focus even more to just a starship crew. Once I have some hanging storylines tied up, my focus will be on a series set close to the time of ST:PIC.
