Donny's Refit Enterprise Interiors (Version 2.0)

I didn't go too overboard with the nautical memorabilia. I bought the globe and the model ship off the Unreal Marketplace, and the barometer on the table on the right was something I modeled in 2015.

And, with that, I'm done with the lounges for now. I'll take final renders soon!
Now, that looks like a place to hang out!

"We tried to make them as thin as possible, but they ended up being wedge-shaped to accommodate the batteries...
Just like the MacBook Air. The key to predicting the future is just to apply a little logic (or real-world constraints).

Good grief that looks cozy. Could we get a bigger image if some of us wanted to use it as desktop wallpaper? Clicking on the image sends me to a login page...
Hmm. That’s odd. Clicking on the image should bring you to my Flickr, where you can then download a 4K image...

(edit) I’m getting the same result. I’ll investigate here in a bit. If I can’t get it to work I can mail you a high res image.

(double edit) Fixed! For some reason the image was marked private. Should be good to go!

So, for sickbay, I'm going to be revising my layout from my 2014 build.

For the old build, this was my general layout:

I was quite happy with the results in the end, but upon viewing Michael C. Rupprecht Miranda Class Cruiser General Plans a few months back, I decided I like the layout he depicts more, which is basically the same as what I did before but with another office and examination room mirrored with an operating room (something we never saw in the movies) serving as the symmetry line. Given that the Miranda and Connie Refit share the same general shape of primary hull, we can assume that the Connie Refit has a similar sickbay layout. I've taken the zoomed in schematic of his depiction of sickbay and did some photoshop work to display the entire sickbay wing, explaining why the text is flipped in the upper left portion:

This ends up making sickbay a much larger area and more believable, IMO, and the addition of the operating room gives an opportunity to depict something new (not that it would look wildly different from the examination room, but I figure I could spice it up a bit with some greebles).

I don't know if I'm actually going to flesh out the "medical storage lockers area". I may use the space to put additional offices or rooms, depending on how I'm feeling when I get the rest of the complex fleshed out ;)

This is a really nice layout, but it still doesn't explain the curved walls

The TOS sickbay complex was curved too. The Making of Star Trek said that sickbay was at the heart of the saucer, wrapped around the central computer core. This probably informed the line in "Elaan of Troyius," "I want you to go to sickbay. It's the best-protected part of the ship." Franz Joseph's blueprints also followed that description.

However, looking at Donny's original layout, it looks like the curvature of the ward is too tight to be consistent with fitting inside a circular section at the core of the saucer, given the placement of the exam room and office portions and the service corridor.

One comment: even though they'll have all manner of nifty sensors and monitors in the 23rd and half century, the nurses stations in the ICU wards should still have direct line of sight to all the beds in the ward, IMO. In the layout shown the nurses station has no clear view of the last two or three beds at the far end of the compartment.

I've always read the scene as the guy was doing maintenance when the alert was called and now running to his alert duty station without having taken the time to ditch the vacuum cleaner. Beside could be worse, could be an ice-cream maker.

Maybe not so much a “vacuum cleaner” as a decontamination and sterilization unit.

And here is a plan view of the revised block-out in Unreal:

Obviously, Chapel isn't a resident MD on the ship in TWOK, so for my TWOK layout, this will be either the head nurse or another MD's office (cadet MD?)

Now that the block-out is complete and everything lines up correctly with the stretch of corridor, I can begin the real work!

Perhaps the "glass" in McCoy's office-lab isn't glass? Perhaps, also, it can be computer-customized to reflect whichever Medical Officer is on-shift at the time. Ditto for the nurse on duty that shift.

Hey Donny, modern carriers also have a lab / pharmacy (see link below). Is there a way you could incorporate this into your design? Even in the 2270s, medicines need to be stored somewhere that access can be restricted to specific individuals. And even though tricorders can provide medical information that today requires labwork, there are still going to be situations where more detailed testing and analysis will need to be performed.

Wouldn't these be delivered through hypo-spray which are all created/developed in sickbay anyway?

FWIW, I see these lit containers in the wall of the examination room as medicine storage of some sort.

Perhaps I can have a larger area of these accessible via the sterile passageway that runs behind the offices?

Omg! I never noticed that there’s were little bottles and vials in there before. I’m always discovering new things in the set thanks to you.

Regarding the offices - I’m not sure that McCoy would have had the CMO office during TMP. I had the impression that even though Kirk pulled McCoy in himself, it was as a specialist/advisor while Chapel was still the CMO. Perhaps shortly after TMP this changed but during the movie it seems that Chapel is still fulfilling the role.

It was Chapel who came to treat Chekhov when he burnt his arm. And Chapel seemed to be the one treating Spock after his meld with Vejer. McCoy on the other hand, spent much of the movie hanging around on the bridge - presumably to either observe and/or support Kirk. This did not seem to be a person that had responsibility for the health and wellness of any ot the other crew members. Closest he got was trying to hold Kirk back from pressing an exhausted Spock for answers. And even that was probably more about serving as a personal “check” on Kirks obsessive behavior and spare Chapel from having to the the “bad guy” and stand up to a skipper that happened to be now be a rear admiral “living legend” that’s working though his obsession and control issues.

No, Kirk basically pulled him in last minute for that mission, barely getting him on board in time for launch. They could sort out the org-chart later. In my head cannon, Chapel left shortly after TMP - she was certainly qualified to be a CMO. With McCoy there now there was little reason for her to stay - and with her credentials and references could probably get a CMO or comparable position elsewhere relatively easily.

That’s some good speculation! Thanks for providing your point of view, because I’ll take this into account!
