Stay-at-Home Thread

Since more and more countries restrict social contacts and more and more of us are to stay at home, I thought it'd be interesting to swap ideas what you can do at home in order to avoid going stone crazy and murdering your offspring or SO.

I tidied up my attic in January and discovered that I own 4 moving crates of wool, mostly tiny leftovers but also half a dozen half-finished knitting projects. So I decided to take measures to get rid of all that wool in a creative manner (which means that until I die I'll never have to buy a pair of socks, a sweater or a cardigan again).
Atm I am knitting and crotcheting 3 projects simultaneousely while listening to audiobooks:
1) my doctor socks (I knit those only while waiting at the doctors),
2) a cross between a bolero and a sweater. Imagine a scarf with sleeves. I'll need that one in winter when my shoulders and neck freeze while reading in bed. Here's a pic: https://www.swr.de/buffet/kreativ/h...204/did=25164762/nid=257204/nd1wgk/index.html (mine is violet coloured and much fluffier as I use mohair wool)
3) some of the tiny leftovers from previous projects will become egg cozies. That's my lunchbreak work this week. I love soft boiled eggs but if you keep them in the open, the second one gets cold and if you keep it in the water it'll get hard. So I decided to go waaaay back to granny-times and make a few egg cozies.
(btw, does anyone happen to know a murder mystery called "The Blood-Stained Egg Cozy"? Very thrilling and a surprising solution.)

What is your method of killing time?

I have several things I can do at the moment. Here in Melbourne, about to enter level 3 restrictions.

I can still go out and exercise. Planning on buying some more exercise equipment in the next week or so. My daily exercise will be riding my bike around a local bike track here in Melbourne. I also do several things on my computer and play some games. thinking about playing STO again, after some problems with Stellaris tonight. Also watching old TV shows is good too (at the moment I'm watching X-Files. Thinking about watching buffy soon). I just wish to stay healthy.

I’m working from home, and by the end of the day I’m zonked. To be honest. Not a right lot has changed.

The kids are showing no sign of getting bored of YouTube videos. Should I be concerned about their screen time? When I was their age, the derelict coal mine, rail yard, slag heap, quarry pool, abattoir, heavy metal polluted steams, and the unfenced main line railway were my playground. I think they’ll be fine.

Camp NaNoWriMo starts on April 1 (write a novel in 30 days). I'm ready to go - been looking forward to this for weeks, as I haven't left my apartment building since the first week of March (everyone in my province who has so much as a sniffle has been told to stay home, whether it's covid-related or not). I don't have the virus, but I do have a persistent cough and other cold symptoms that just won't leave. The one thing I do not have is a fever.

So... online gaming, writing, reading... vision issues mean I can't read physical books or do needlework (or I'd end up with a small mountain of needlepoint projects I'd always wanted to tackle).

Someone on my news site brought up the issue of vitamin D and SAD. Canadians don't get a lot of sunlight/clear days in winter, so people are ready to go outside this time of year... and are being told not to, or at least not to anywhere near as much as we want to. We're still getting snow where I am and the sky is overcast.

Calgary blocked off some roads that are ordinarily for traffic so people could have more room to take a walk and maintain distance from each other. That's an idea more cities should adopt.

I still go to work every day but will finally try telecommuting on Thursday. I just think work and home should stay separate. Home is my refuge from work, and work is a place to get productive. The office is mostly empty anyway, so it's not as stressful as when we're operating at full capacity.

I've been working from home for the past week, and my wife has been doing it for three weeks. My two kids are taking their classes from home. So far so good, my desk is in the basement, and my wife's is on the main level, my son does his school work in his room, and my daughter is working on the kitchen table, so we're all kind of spread out.
My son is a senior in high school, and is pissed that this is how his high school career is going to end: No prom, probably no graduation ceremony, can't hang out with his friends, and he can't go to work.

My dog is very confused why we're all here all the time.

still I am making music and video --- my video production has increased by about 8 hours now that I need to be away from the computer desktop doing things I just set it up and let it go listening to the video's if they would need volume adjusting which happens way too much you know.. this is one of the latest videos I have used this for video meeting background of myself in the picture of me atop.===

BTW in the number of things this video is the 4748'th video I have uploaded to youtube...I guess 5,000 is the actual point I might make something special to upload just for the 5000th video --- I did something for the 1000th video so yeah basically just been going at it with the other uploads and now it is picking up more.--- ;)

I like to send cards to people to cheer them up. I sent a bunch out that just said "We Thought Of You ToDay!" And had a huge smile face under the words. I have projects to get done some sewing and a scarf to knit. I am trying to balance my time right now. Doing the normal things, getting outside when I can, and doing some projects. I also play with my cat a lot. So glad I have her makes a difference! It does take a lot of getting used to my husband being home all of the time and working here now. I am doing a journal to write my thoughts and experiences with all of this. Things are changing...

I'm tired of all of this. I am working from home, so that has changed some but not a lot.
I think I'm just tired of worrying if I'm going to catch the disease or worse have a mild case and pass it to my 91 year old father.
If I died who would take care of my dogs?
I've been taking the dogs out everyday for walks. I have a good sized yard they get to be out in when they want.
And I'm trying to do at least one large water color painting per week or so. (Working 4O hours per week) I don't get to or have the energy to paint a ton.
I think just worrying is getting to me.
I'm pretty bummed out. I'm almost always an upbeat person, not used to felling bummed out.
I'm also worried about the world economy.

My friends are planning to start a D&D video chat campaign soon. Hopefully really soon, only face to face interaction I have to look forward to anytime soon.
I'm starting one too! Or more accurately, I'm figuring out how to switch over the one we're already running.
(Thanks to Mrs. Silvercrest for showing me this post.)

I don't go outside unless I absolutely have to in general (for appointments, work and groceries, basically), not just during a pandemic, so I guess maybe I can give a few recommendations.

Read a lot. Books, newspapers, whatever. Also, try to take your time eating. No need to rush. Watch a lot of TV shows (Netflix, DVDs, whichever medium you like best) - but only the ones you really enjoy, don't waste your time and effort on stuff you realize you don't like, otherwise the negativity will start to annoy you pretty quickly. Get yourself "liking an actor" as a hobby - you can spend endless hours organizing your picture collection of him. lol And... sleep a lot. Take naps whenever you want to or feel you have to.

hang in there! Remember that all the world is in the same situation, so you are definitely not alone. Do you think chatting with people might help? TrekBBS used to have a chatroom and I wonder if we could revive that tradition.
This corona stress is growing curious blossoms: my sis who always loathed needlework has turned into an avid knitter and is now going to buy a sewing machine and repair all her torn clothes as a remedy against having to spend a loney Easter. I'll spend the holidays painting.

Do you have no neighbours, friends or relatives who could care for your dogs if necessary? When Ghostie moved to a nursing home where no pets were allowed we helped finding a new home for her two cats. We can do the same for your dogs if necessary. But considering what you have been through before I am convinced you are waaay too tough for this virus :) It'll loose a few teeth, trying to bite you :D
I think the world economy will get out of this relatively unscathed. After all, every single country in the world will have exactly the same problem. Everyone will have to restart their economy and produce like crazy and everyone will have a market for their products. It's all so tightly enmeshed nowadays that we'll all rise and fall together and the relative differences between us will remain the same, only on a higher or lower level.

btw, I was alerted to the problem that 'confinement' has a negative ring (unless used in the Victorian sense). I wasn't aware of that and want this thread to be a help against and not an addition to stress, so don't be surprised if the thread undergoes a sudden name change.

There are two of us living and working from within a 1-bedroom apartment, so there are definitely times that I feel claustrophobic and anxious. During the day we're both doing our best to work (though focusing is quite challenging) but we are still allowed to go outside, so I take 2-3 walks a day for exercise, fresh air, vitamin D, a little space and maybe a snack or a coffee from one of the nearby businesses that's still open. I largely try to keep a "routine" Mon-Fri in getting up early, exercising at home and enjoying coffee before I transition to "work mode" (but again, I'll take walks during the day and/or at the end of "work mode" as my schedule permits). We had to create a work area in the bedroom for one of us to use, and the end result is that we tidied up the bedroom a bit, got rid of a few things, etc. We did a deep clean of the bathroom. I re-organized our kitchen pantry. I want to go through and clean out our closets. We need to do our taxes. We are playing more games on our phones. We are finding unique ways to interact with our friends and family - from the more traditional calls and texts to Zoom or Houseparty or Marco Polo apps. We alternate between cooking more and ordering takeout to support local businesses that are struggling. And we're streaming lots of content on various platforms - Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO, etc.

A vr headset has been worth its weight in gold at this time, Google earth in vr is phenomenal for traveling the global then jumping into vr street mode to wander the places at street level.....of course the irony is that yesterday i spent about 2 hours wandering about my own area at street level. Lol
