Stay-at-Home Thread

I like working from home but I catch myself moving around far less than at my office. There are less distractions at home and since the mall under my flat is closed it's lovely quiet.
The only drawback is that the sweets shop further up the lane is open only 3 hours per day and I missed it today. Ah well, tomorrow I'll get myself a nice treat as a start into a 1 week vacation.

Quite a lot of people use the restrictions to renovate and tidy their places. The recycling centers in my vicinity have complained that they get overrun by gazillions of people. They begged in all media only to bring trash in absolute emergencies as they, too, run with only a minimum of staff atm. I had a huge crate of milk cartons that I had planned to bring them but I've now upcycled them to flowerpots for my baby tomatos and cucumbers :)

Working from home is so much worse than working from work. I'm glad there are some three day weekends coming up.

I love working from home. I wish it was possible to continue after all this is over.

I like working from home buit I catch myself moving around far less than at my office.

I have this problem too. Much less distractions, and I don't have to get out of my chair to attend meetings. :) So I end up getting much more focused than in the office, and I forget to stand up and walk around.

My issue is that my girl dogs wants to go inside then outside and back in etc. like every twenty minutes.

I think I'm just tired of worrying if I'm going to catch the disease or worse have a mild case and pass it to my 91 year old father.
So much of this. I think the one little factoid that's been plaguing my psyche the most, is that there's claims that this virus acts differently to differing blood types, A types being hit 20% harder, & O types like 1/3 less likely, & that could explain why there are such varied reactions to it.

That's based on limited research & so not concrete, nor peer-reviewed, but being O- myself sort of keeps that thought in my head, and adds to a paranoia that I could be a type that gets it & won't know. I work in a hospital (That's had 16 employees test positive now) & though I am technically "Essential" I'm not in patient care. So they've let me take some time off here & there. Plus, they have us temperature tested upon entrance, & we're all wearing masks while there. I've even taken to having gloves on most of the time too, because if ever I do have it & don't know, I want to minimize my cross contamination, but I'm still overly conscious of every damn headache or dry throat I've had in the past 2 weeks. It's enough to convince you are are sick, even if you aren't

It's like a guerrilla war. I'm seeing shadows in the bushes, so to speak. I'm probably overreacting, but who can say really? The being at home part is not as big a concern for me. I just do the same normal things I'd do at home, except I'm keeping everybody I know away. I'd be willing to isolate more, but I don't want to exhaust my time, in case I need it for being legit sick. So back to the grind on Saturday

I hope the blood type thing is wrong, me and my dad are both type A.:ack:
My BF is type B! What about B's?
He's probably a carrier:crazy:

In the mornings, after we have done all the housework, my son and I have been playing Quiddler for an hour or so. In the afternoon I have been doing a 500 piece jigsaw of the world. I am waiting for more games and jigsaws to be delivered. I have also been keeping a diary of our self-isolation.

I've also read that it seems to be generally more fatal to men, although they haven't determined specifically why that is, yet.

(Sorry, guys.)

I tried telecommute for the very first time today, and I'm pleased to say that it went well. I wasn't sure how I would feel, given the reasons I previously stated. I get a lot of work done in the office, and so my biggest concern was that I was going to be bored out of my mind and would have nothing to report to my boss.

Using remote desktop access enabled me to connect directly to my computer at work. So between emails, meeting notices, spreadsheets, and reports, I actually had a productive day. I'm getting the hang of it. ;)

By the way, I missed the personal interactions, but this was for a good reason. Also, when I'm at work, I always meet or exceed my goal of 10,000 footsteps a day.

I've heard that one as well, but I'm also hearing that some of the studies on that come from China or Italy, where in both countries men outnumber women in smoking by a vast amount, especially among the older people who are already at risk, & that smoking could potentially be an incredibly hazardous factor in worsening COVID-19's effect. Nothing concrete there either yet, I'd imagine though

Local contributing factors like that are definitely something to be aware of, because here in the US, our main health issues, hypertension, diabetes & heart disease might also play a detrimental role in outcomes.

B types landed at normal rates.

I can't be positive of any of this though. It's not peer-reviewed data at this point. It's all anecdotal based on what people are seeing happen, & there's just too much all happening at once for anyone to make solid determinations. So I'll hope for as much wellness for you as anybody else. It's possible there's nothing to it at all. I only mentioned it, because it's the one thing that keeps getting stuck in my own paranoid mind

I apologize if I've passed it on. I should curtail that

I've asked a few specialists over here and a colleague in China and they say as far as they can tell the blood type has nothing to do with the infection rate or severity. The virus does not attack your red blood cells but the cells in your respiratory system, therefore the blood group doesn't matter. What does matter is your general state of health and your age since the older you are, the slower your immune system reacts to intruders. That's both because in old people everything goes slower but also because they often have other illnesses which keep the body too busy to react quickly to an infection.
But that's something we should rather discuss in the corona thread as it leads us too far off topic here.

I'll have a week off starting this afternoon and am not quite sure how to kill the time. I have 2 new audiobooks and I have started to learn how to make bobbin lace. I think I'll try making a wristband in that technique =)
Is there anyone else into old needlework techniques? I do tatting, too, and it'd be fun to swap patterns.

One day, I’ll do NaNoWriMo. Lots of people have the time for this now, I’m grateful that I still have a job, but working from home is harder than the office. Everything takes longer.
Camp NaNoWriMo just started, so there's still time to sign up.

The Camp events allow you to set your own word count goal, so it's not like it's the 50,000-word marathon people go through in November.

I've set a modest goal for myself of 15,000 words this time, which is just 500 words/day. That's doable in about half an hour (for me; others may take longer or shorter). But it helps that I have a plan for my story, even though I'm writing different versions simultaneously.

My story is based on the computer game King's Heir: Rise to the Throne. At first I'd decided to novelize the game events and that led me to expand on What Happened Before/After the game events. But then I wondered how things would turn out if one pivotal event did not happen, and the result has been a longer in-universe time line, a much grimmer, darker story, but the characters (that I allowed to live; I killed off one of the main ones who lived in the original version) go through greater challenges and character growth.

This has meant juggling a story in which the events of the game happen on the same day, vs. a story in which I make them happen over a period of 3 years, and some of those events are very different from the game. I think it's a bit more realistic as well, and answers some of the "waitaminute, that doesn't quite make sense" moments I had while playing the game.

So bored, being stuck in the house with little to do. Can't make too much noise because hubby is working in his office. Not feeling 100%, so not really up to cleaning. Played all my games to death and don't have much money coming in, so I feel guilty about spending money on anything frivolous. Just....cranky. Harumph.

Well, I'm still working.
And unfortunately I work for the unemployment office.
So there are 87 zillion people in the system doing stuff on their claims, and about 87 percent of our office is working from home. So the system is deathly slow.
So I have to work but it feels like I'm on dial up.
Oh and today my neighbor's are having a gigantic tree removed from their yard that is like 8 or 10 feet from my house.
I moved my computer into my bed room to work, just in case the gigantic tree falls on my house. The bed room is a safer option than the kitchen, where I was working.
So was-waa-waa today for me.

How about an audiobook? Reading a real book is a bit exhausting if you are feeling under the weather but an audiobook might be a good distraction.
Do you have a garden? Maybe you could surf the net for new ideas. You know, plants that might fit in, sources from where to buy seeds, stuff like that?
I'm currently planning how to pep up a 10 m² corner of my parents' garden which is extremely shady. It turns out to be harder than I thought as there are only few plants that can grow in deep shade and on a rather dry soil in a very cold climate.

Dunno what kinds of games you like, but Big Fish Games is offering several of theirs for free. These are the Collector's Editions, which have more content than the Standard Editions. There's a wide variety of games on that site - some are always free to play, and they have some very good sales at times.

Park Ranger 10 just came out, and it's just what I need - a virtual trip to Pinecreek Hills, picking up after the second-messiest people on the planet (the Cruise Director games are worse, the way they leave stuff scattered all over the ship). One of my NaNoWriMo projects back in 2018 was trying to turn the first Park Ranger game into a novel. I actually did figure out a coherent storyline as to why the main character was picking up all this stuff lying around. This series of games is Hidden Object, and it's fun trying to come up with explanations for why there's a fancy violin mixed up with the t-shirts and hats in the camp gift shop, or a pizza box on top of an old mine shaft.

Working from home, as is my husband. We're doing well so far. My 4th grader is in remote school, so far it's going really well. It helps that he's reasonably self-motivated and he's got enough of a sense of duty to do school stuff even if he doesn't really feel like it at times.
Most of my free time is taken up by games on the cellphone and TV-shows (mostly streamed), although I do make a point of going out for a walk every day either during lunch or when I finish work.

Still have to work two days of the week. Don't have a car, so I still go grocery shopping every second day. Otherwise I stay inside.

Aside from watching a fuckton of YouTube, lot of Netflix, I also started writing again. Currently working on a Sword and Sorcery short story with a duo of characters I feel very good about.
