Donny's Refit Enterprise Interiors (Version 2.0)

Well, with the rise of the alt-right in recent years, I'm sure he's much happier at whatever sci-fi-themed Bund meeting he's gracing with his presence now.
A shame he couldn't have just dumped all that knowledge into a database for us to trawl through on our own so we wouldn't have had to deal with his rampant antisemitic, neo-fascist bullshit.
Why does invoking TGT always make me feel like I'm saying "Beetlejuice" three times? ;) I miss his inout on TMP but I don't miss the things I later discovered about his attitudes (eek).
Wow, I remember when TGT was here, but I have no memory of this. Was this something that went down over in The Neutral Zone? I don't venture in there too much.

Re: The paintings, it's not too surprising that they're by Robert McCall. The filmmakers would want to be sure that they had all the rights to the paintings all tied up. You don't want someone coming out of the woodwork to sue over the unauthorized use of their art in the film. Remember the fellow who designed Mike Tyson's face tattoo suing over the unauthorized use of his design in The Hangover, Part 2?
I actually went with the simplified gold frame because it ties in with what I've set with the rest of the room. Putting ornate frames on the paintings will detract from the Art Deco/Nautical feel I'm going for, methinks. Maybe I can find something in between basic and ornate, like a wider but more conventional frame such as this or this?
Yeah, going simple is the way to go, I agree. Remember that these are background details, not the main focus. And I definitely think you should keep the nautical feel you've got going for the TWOK version of the lounge. (Any thoughts on sticking the ship's wheel from TFF's observation lounge in there somewhere, Donny?)
I'm leaning towards a frame more like the Sarek/Lincoln one.
:techman:
Hey, you were talking about maybe using abstract art in one of the sets -- how about some of the early concept paintings for V'Ger? Some of those are pretty abstract, and it'd be a nice in-joke.
Love this idea! Nice tip of the hat.

In the mintiature shot, we see that there are some multi-colored cups and what appears to be magazines strewn about on the little counter area below the windows, so I've gone ahead and added those in.

And yes, those are Gold Key Comics ;)

Need to refine the lighting a bit but I'm getting there on the TMP lounge!

What gets me is, if the ship was launched prematurely on an emergency mission and they didn't even have time to make sure the warp engines and transporters could work without killing anybody, then when did they have time to decorate the lounge? Priorities, people!!

Why do you think Starfleet gave the ship back to Kirk? Decker had the work crews focused on decorating rather than anything useful. :)

It's kind of like how the special effects for TMP weren't even close to done but Jerry Goldsmith had time to record score just for the heck of it because he had nothing else to do.

Come to think of it, considering it seriously rather than as a joke, I suppose the lounges and recreation areas were finished first for the benefit of the engineering crew working to refit the ship, so they'd have a place to rest and relax between shifts. Every workplace needs a break room.

Exactly my thought

Before they stopped going in there at all. Not because they weren't allowed, but out of respect of how much less awesome they were than the ones who did. ;)

This makes sense - the massive recreation deck seemed pretty complete too.

We've also been talking about modular construction. Th bridge module (and lower decks) could have been fitted in relatively complete with little to no work needing to be done to get it finished. Same with the rec deck.

Regular crew, too. I expect people working on the ship would've started living on it as soon as they were able to. Decker, Uhura, Sulu, Chekov, Scotty, Rand, and Chapel has probably been on the ship full-time for weeks, at least. Probably months.

Well, I suppose most of them could've been "commuting" from their homes on Earth via transporter and shuttlecraft, but they still would've been moved-in for a while. Anyone who wasn't from Earth, though, probably lived on the ship rather than in the drydock, Orbital Office, or groundside bases. It's not just a matter of convenience, getting everything set up right in the accommodations and human-factors would be as much a part of the rebuild as anything else, and no one wants to be halfway out of the solar system the first time they stay the night on the ship and find out the sonic showers on odd-numbered decks don't warm up when more than three are being used at once.
