Why do they all look like they were made of poured cement?

It looks like all the ship designs are the same, but I see at least two different styles of nacelles; one type is more round and the other type is more angular. I suppose that’s a cop-out way of making multiple ship classes. They also seem to have the Kelvinverse glowing end caps. I’m just glad they didn’t show those godawful Luna and Odyssey classes.

Yeah, they’re pretty generic, but they’re good enough for me; they satisfy my ship porn need. And this show was not about Starfleet, so I get it. Cheap 2399 uniforms and cheap 2399 ships. I agree with @Timo and @The Old Mixer that I would have preferred just one mega-badass ship instead of a ‘squadron’ of 200 small nondescript ships sharing 95% the same design. But there’s always next season.

I just wish they had names and registry numbers, but I suppose if you’re going to just show multiple copies of the same ship, that would be redundant.

In the end, though, do starships even need visible names and numbers?

In 2399, ships would probably be identified purely by transponder codes.

It’s for the audience’s sake, not for any in-universe reason.

As you are so fond of saying, they’re all just saucers and nacelles. I would have thought that by 2399 Starfleet would have made advances in ship design to the point where ships would look very different from what we’ve previously seen.

Well, nothing of the sort happened in the preceding decades or centuries, so why now?

But take these, and the E-C, and the E-D sort of falls squarely on a smooth trendline with time as the horizontal axis and, dunno, smoothness and blending as the vertical one. The E-nil is nicely on the part extrapolated to earlier times, too. And perhaps the E-J on the future part of that trendline, and also standing testimony that nothing really new is to be expected, like, ever.

So bland, omg. The new Starfleet is so bland looking. That’s my initial reaction.

Why not? Between Voyager returning with future tech, between technology acquired during the Dominion war, between the Romulans also building new ships without any visible nacelles, there’s all kinds of reasons why the tech could have advanced to the point where standard warp drive and standard ship design could have changed.

    And...because they can.

Just wait until you see the V’draysh starships ;)

Hell, it probably won't be long before they all start zipping around through repurposed BorgTech™ transwarp conduits. They are definitely pulling a lot of story and tech queues from STO.

No, it doesn't make the STO Avenger canon. They're not the same ship.

We have no idea how old these ships are, unless someone mentioned how old they were in dialogue. They could all have been built at Utopia Planitia in 2380 for all we know.

I sincerely doubt it. These ships were hastily made at the last minute. If they need new ships for PIC season 2, they'll have more time to come up with something far more unique than the garbage designs of STO.

Not on the exterior, so maybe it’s just a big holographic viewscreen.

Obviously a re-use of the Discovery bridge set, which makes sense for a small moment in this episode. Shame it is not more in keeping with the Sovereign class interiors, but I guess it is forgivable, what with them actually including some LCARS behind on the screens.

Not every design in STO is garbage, some of them are outright beautiful.

That link just took me to a playable ship page. It didn't show a specific ship. I was assuming you had a specific ship in mind.
