@Donny, scrolling through your flickr photos, you've never modeled the Enterprise's botanical gardens, have you? That would be fun to see, and would certainly look bright and cheery to all of our quarantined asses right now. I've no idea what kind of plant assets you have access to, but...

They actually built a cocktail lounge miniature to go behind those windows during the is-it-or-isn't-it-the-Rec-Deck back and forth. I sent Donny the plans for it, suggesting he could make a variation with the tables and stuff for it on the starboard side looking into the botanical deck.

I definitely have plans to do the botanical garden one day as well. Higher up on the priority list right now are polishing up my old sets, and then I'll trickle down to the things I haven't done before. I know it's not as exciting, but those sets are screaming to be upgraded to my current standard (sickbay, photon torpedo bay, and officer's quarters are still left to revamp). But who knows? I tend to just go where my motivation leads.

As far as plant assets, I could buy some from around the interwebs to use, modifying some colors here and there to make the plants be a mix of breeds from Earth and alien worlds.

For me at least, this is the only place I've ever seen that shade of orange, so I chalk it up as another unique element to the TMP aesthetic. It's certainly different, which is one thing I appreciated about TMP next to the rest of the movie lineup.

Oh... by "this place" I meant "this movie." This orange is so much in the creature comfort areas of TMP that I'd almost wonder if its a kind of department color. I actually like it for how unusual it is.

Naturally, because the officer's lounge set was made of leftover rec deck pieces, since they didn't have the budget to build the lounge set as originally conceived (except in miniature).

Honestly, they could have just set designed the Rec Deck to have a lounge area on the upper level by the windows and made further use of that giant, underused set.

Is that planter related to the power transfer conduits on TNG? Are they the same size? Maybe these came from a mold that they used to make those.

I don't think the lounge was ever supposed to be a full two decks high. I started doing one as well, and it's like 1 and a half. But I was working off from those Probert blueprints.

Just to give you a taste of what the re-modeling is actually achieving, take a look at the difference of the quality of the sofa chairs I modeled tonight (top) versus the rather blocky model I made back in 2015 (bottom):

It's interesting to compare the two and how the imperfections (seems, wrinkles etc) are what makes an object look more realistic.
The lower image might be how the designers envisioned the future to look (form fitting, smooth, seamless) whereas the upper image is the reality that was actually produced for the movie.

When they did the designs, they didn't know they'd run over budget and have to scrap the more elaborate lounge set in favor of recycled Rec Deck components.

I thought that was what they did (even before the DE implied it with the added nacelle) until I got a really good look at the upper level balcony and realized how narrow it was, and noticed there’s a back wall visible in the shots of Kirk.

Right?? Although the TMP scheme is growing on me, there's something so comforting about the wood grain/tan look I'm employing. Reminds me a little of Kirk's apartment in SF we see earlier in the film. I imagine somewhere after he took command after TMP, there was a minor refit where he requested the lounge be re-decorated to his liking. Or perhaps there's a decorating crew on board in charge or refurnishing areas of the ship using the fabricators on board?

Like I said above, the TMP scheme is really growing on me now that I've properly dialed in the colors. I'm really glad I've decided to create both versions in tandem this time around. That way I get to preserve the sets as they were, and have some fun making something new in the cases of what we might have seen if regards to the TMP sets that we didn't see in TWOK

Just the wide-angle shots in the Rec Deck scene. I think it was the screencaps from the blu-ray that made it obvious to me that there was no way you could cram the officer's lounge in there. On VHS, or even the DVD on an old 4x3 screen, you didn't get the same sense of the room.

I'm not a fan of orange in general* but I find myself preferring the TMP color scheme because the visual interest and contrast is down in the room with the furniture and not up on the walls. IOW, I find the blue too neutral for the amount of wood. Maybe a bit less wood on the walls (and maybe bring the wood down into the room on the tables or something.)

You are comparatively lucky. My brother was born Christmas day, and I was born a week earlier the next year. He had to demand birthday wrapping on his birthday presents, and my birthday was forgotten. Twice.

As to the set I don’t quite buy that they didn’t know they were over budget because principal photography went way over schedule so they were over budget pretty quickly.

It probably depend so on how early in the schedule they filmed the Rex deck scenes. I seem to recall they had to tear it down so they can build the Vejur set in that stage. If that is correct they may not have been very behind shooting schedule (or knew they would be) at the time the Rex deck scenes were filmed. And even if it wasn’t later - the set designs would have been established before principal photography began. So not definitive proof that they didn’t know, but it make a it must more plausible that they went into the design not thinking they would need to reuse parts of it.
