I don't agree with innocent Chinese citizens being harassed but it's perfectly ok to call it a Chinese virus because it came from China. What I find interesting is people believing ANYTHING that is coming out of China i.e, numbers of deaths. I've seen threads where someone studied cell phone data to get a ball park figure of how many have died. Apparently in China your mobile number is bound to your national ID and also to your bank account. If you lose your number you lose access to Alipay (which is how they pay for everything) so people don't just cancel their phone number.
Someone did the math by adding the number of lost numbers between the three major telecoms in China and came up with about 140 million lost numbers.
First off, that's just counting, not "doing the math".
Second, this just counts how many people are dying, not how many are dying of the virus. Because, you know, while this is going on, people are still dying of old age, cancer, food poisoning, suicide, accidents, etc..
Now, 140 million people is almost precisely ten percent of the Chinese population according to the estimates of 2018, which is what Wikipedia is showing for population number in China. So, do we believe that China is losing ten percent of its population during this crisis? No. Because while people are dying, of COVID-19, old age, cancer food poisoning, etc., there are also new people being born who haven't yet been assigned a mobile number.
Honestly, this number sounds more made-up, the more I think about it. Because, just like these newborns, there are a lot of people in China who don't even have a mobile phone to lose. So, only the people with mobile phone numbers dying would be at ten percent of the whole population.
Yeah, I'm not buying it. Give me a better source than "someone", maybe I'll consider it.
