Isn't that picture from the Austin Powers movie with a Dutch badguy with German accent?

Bingo. Dutch accents are funny though. I worked for a Dutch guy who sounded Swedish, but his brother sounded German. I think the brother was in the US longer, so that coulda been it.

This is surely the worst part where the cases and deaths are just going up and up with no end in sight of it plateauing it just feels hopeless and frightening.

I work for an adverting agency and the bosses have been very supportive so far as we're all pulling together to help the business to keep running.

Contrast this with the previous agency I worked for, I still have close friends there and they've put measures in place to work from home but then have told staff that anyone who doesn't come into the office doesn't get paid whilst they drive their 100k SUVs home, basically stitching up all the people there who have kids and putting theirs and others health at risk. What utter fucking scum.

^same here :)
This is starting to get real hairy, real fast here in the UK - and we haven't even been hit as hard as a lot of countries in Europe. There is a general sense of panic in the population[...]
I suppose that with the famous "splendid isolation" many Britains have been feeling too safe and not taken into consideration that nowadays with global trade and travelling, no island is isolated anymore.
Don't be afraid of losing your job. If at all it would only be temporarily. And after the virus wave trade and production must be restarted really quickly. There will be no time to teach new workers, else the competitors will conquer the market. So the companies will inevitably have to fall back on their experienced staff.

Just some affectionate teasing between friendly neighbours :D
Exactly ! And though we Germans have pretty good cheese as well, I'd never risk cutting off my Edamer, Gouda or Leerdamer supply :D

I've just lost hope in everything.
please don't. This is just another virus, just like the flu or a common headcold. The only difference is that this one spreads faster and is riskier for old patients. All these measures (curfew, closing shops, minimizing contacts) are just meant to make it spread slower. This gives us time to find a remedy. For milennia, nature has thrown germs at us and none managed to kill us or our ancestors. We're the result of generations of selection for the best immune system. Plus we have medical abilities that no generation before ours had. We shall survive this virus, just as we survived all its ancestors. Just hang in there and don't give up (depression is bad for the immune system). And remember that you're not alone in this. We are only a mouseclick away and even if you get completely isolated from your environment, you can still reach out to us on the internet.

The death toil in Italy has reached 3 405.
That's terrible :( In Germany, we have only some 20 so far. We had the advantage of getting an early warning when we had a local outbreak in February where people caught the infection from a Chinese co-worker at a seminary. We started first measures then and propably that is what makes the difference now. Italy started extremely late and with the country having so many ports the risk there was higher from the start. Also, Germans tend to live alone or in families of 2 or 3. Statistically, Italians tend to have larger families and in my experience are far more sociable. The warmer climate in Italy might perhaps also aid the virus a bit.

But it's not a virus that came from China i.e. a Chinese Virus. This is why I've lost hope in everything. All logic has gone out of the window. Plus people here in America calling the measures we are taking a big over-reaction. While that may be true, I tend to judge by actions rather than words and all the actions I've seen taken indicate that this is Bad. Maybe worse than we're being told. Everything is collapsing. No one in my part of the state is taking it seriously. Lots of people in eastern Kentucky already have lung problems from smoking and all this damn coal dust that's everywhere. When it hits here, we're done for.

In the same vein of all logic going out of the window, I've heard that this will be over in the summer because the heat will kill the virus. Nevermind that it's normally 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit inside of your body. Plus I've just seen that the Surgeon General had to get Kylie Jenner to talk to "millenials" telling them to take precautions because they weren't taking the threats seriously. They won't listen to actual doctors but they might listen to a woman who's only famous because her sister made a sex tape with a rapper.

We're done for. :weep:

There are many reasons to be frightened of what is to come and it will very likely get worse before it gets better.

People can be confused and foolish and young inexperienced people don’t always follow directions. Even old people have to learn lessons the hard way sometimes.

Instead of focusing on the bad perhaps pay attention to the many little acts of kindness and generosity around you. Like your neighbor who might be grocery shopping for the elderly amongst you. Or the people who are volunteering to make box lunches for school children who cannot go to school.

Better yet if you are healthy and able; do something nice for someone who cannot repay you in anyway do it anonymously. Send someone a gas card for $5. Leave a roll of tp on someone’s porch. It doesn’t have to be big.

Some young inexperienced people in Bavaria (and I'm sure all around the globe) thought it funny to intentionally cough at old folks.

I agree to focus on the positive. My apartment house isn't exactly a fountain of neighborly love, but today someone from the 3rd floor put up a note that they'd gladly go shop groceries for those who need it. I might ask them for a source of tp soon ;)

As for Germany vs Italy, we also have more ICU beds relative to population.
But we are also about 9 days behind the curve of Italy. And now it's 45 deaths.

I do think we will get a general curfew rather sooner than later.
It's funny, I am an introvert myself and live a rather secluded life, but the current sitution really makes me stircrazy or it's cabin fever or something. I worry a lot, particularly about my dog in the case I'd get the virus and be quarantined.
