The novel coronavirus is closely to related to SARS and MERS. It's not related to influenza.

That's why they're having to be so strong in their response. For those of us in the United States, it's a cautionary tale, one I fear won't be payed enough attention to. I can see enough people trying to assert their individual "right" to endanger others here, that the authorities will have no choice but to go to a full lockdown.
 
And then there are the bars, gyms, and movie theaters. All closed in my area. Restaurants still open, but takeout only.

On the positive side, panic buying seems to be easing up here.

At any given time I have enough toilet paper in my cupboards to last me a few months. So personally, I didn't really see the need to hoard a whole bunch of it.

America was doing a lot of the same things Italy did before they went into lockdown. I'm worried it will get that bad here except we have a larger population and we're so widespread that a lot of people in rural areas will not stay inside. I try to stay positive but that's just getting harder.

A lot of that is probably due to most people already having a large supply of food. It does help the people who weren't able to get anything yet, but I noticed at one of my local stores that they hadn't been able to restock a lot of things.

It's the illusion of scarcity effect, which retailers can often use to some effect, i.e. not restock quickly thus indicating less supply than is actually there. In this instance the fact that people are worried because they see shortages increases the likelihood of purchasing something even though they don't need it.

It sucks, but humans have a small herd mentality at times so it impacts even the most rational of us.
 
Surprising absolutely nobody, the EuroVision Song Contest has been cancelled for this year.

A certain user tried to justify spreading doubt about the severity of the pandemic by referring to Israel?! Well, now Israel has closed their borders, as well.

France now has about 9.000 documented cases of infection, and 264 deaths due to the virus. Germany now has about 12.000 documented cases of infection.

Portugal declared a state of emergency.

Maybe they could start doing Eurovision and similar shows as online meetings where everybody sings alone at their house in front of a camera.

An article came out yesterday or the day before about how toilet paper companies have had to step up production to keep up with the new demand (they typically already run 24/7!), while at the same time being mindful of employee safety and safeguards against the virus at their plants

Italy has been much more on-the-ball than the US has been. We still have no idea where the American clusters are, or how many are infected.

Assuming the death stats are more reliable than the live testing, we had 10,000ish cases roughly 2-3 weeks ago.

I assume the death stats are more reliable because the trend line has been an almost perfect power curve, doubling every week-ish. Which is about what I'd expect given the infectiousness of the virus. So we're looking at 100 deaths per day by Monday and Italy-level 400 deaths per day by the week after. A thousand per day by April.

Let's hope not. 30,000 deaths per month may not be 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic levels of awful but it'd be terrifying enough.
 
30,000 fatalities per week is not out of the ballpark around mid-late May. That scenario would require the current measures to completely fail to dent growth. However, it's the growth curve as of right now.

Unfortunately I’m not seeing too many people obey the warnings about avoiding public places. I’ve been having to work because it’s a store and an essential service. People still pack in and that’s probably not going to change unless we go into lockdown and close it.
 
My county went into mandated shelter-in-place mode for three weeks starting today. Unfortunately, as a government employee deemed to provide "essential government services" (which is highly debatable for what I actually do), I will still have to go into work one day a week. Yesterday we were finally approved to work remotely on the other days.
